Fort Pierce, Florida is one of the oldest communities along the East Coast, making the Fort Pierce fishing charter a favorite. The city serves as a peaceful alternative to busier nearby cities like Orlando and West Palm Beach and is renowned for some of the most relaxing and productive fishing waters in Florida.
Fort Pierce fishing charters takes pride in their rich fishing traditions. The Indian River Lagoon is acclaimed for hosting some of the finest and most diverse fishing in the United States. Gulf Stream currents off Fort Pierce are plentiful. Trolling the Gulf Stream has been known to yield some real trophy fish with a number of record catches taking place in this region. The Gulf Stream off Fort Pierce is noted for a high population of sailfish. The city is often referred to as the 'Sailfish Capital of the Treasure Cost' with a number of sailfish tournaments being held each year. Choosing a Fort Pierce fishing charter for a weekend trip can yield excellent results.
The Fort Pierce City Marina docks a number of Fort Pierce fishing charters available to take advantage of the scenic waters that Florida's treasure coast has to offer. Visitors can fish for spotted sea trout or tailing redfish on the flats, snapper along the channel edges, tripletail around the channel markers and trophy sized snook along the coast or near the bridges. The summer months of June, July and August are perfect for those looking for tarpon and there are always ladyfish, jack crevalle and other species of fish ready to take your bait.
Many of the Fort Pierce fishing charters docked at the Fort Pierce marina such as Ruby Gene, Fins Sport Fishing, Happy Hooker, Victory and Last Mango that specialize in sailfish, marlin, dolphin, wahoo, cobia, king, grouper, and snapper. These Fort Pierce fishing charters provide state of the art electronics and navigation systems with experienced captains capable of designing a custom trip based upon individual or group needs and skill level. The captains know the waters and the challenges that each season presents. The fishing charters provide adventures for any angler from beginning to advanced. Advanced anglers will appreciate how each captain navigates the region's Reefs and Wrecks, their familiarity with 'secret spots' and their expertise on fishing the waters. Beginning anglers will never forget the experience of their first catch.
Even family members who aren't necessarily into fishing will still enjoy the Fort Pierce fishing charters for the relaxation of the waters and scenery of the nature and wildlife that inhabit the area. There is always the opportunity to witness dolphin, manatee, sea turtle and abundant bird life - including brown and white pelicans, blue herons, wood storks, egrets, ospreys, and sea gulls among the wildlife along the mangroves and islands of the river.

Information to Vientiane, Laos   by Bryant Pugh

In comparison to its neighbors Laos critically isn't as chosen. This on the other hand does not imply that Laos has significantly less to present. A person individual of the explanations that Laos is substantially much less regarded is that it is a landlocked nation. In the era prior to air journey, seamen carry the news about new and fascinating locations Laos getting no sea accessibility is less heard of in comparison to its neighbors. Laos historically has been absorbed and conquered by neighboring kingdoms of Siam and Khmer. Laos has a impressive Buddhist tradition and is home to a lot of temples and has a major population of monks.

The money of Laos is Vientiane it actually is a wonderful city and is notable for its calm environment. Laos is the location to obtain a great deal of Buddhist temples and element gorgeous Buddhist architecture. The country's symbol could be the Pha That Luang a temple observed in Vientiane. Pha That Luang is not just a nationwide symbol but is an vital component inside of Buddhist tradition in Laos.

Laos has significantly improved its tourist spots. The quantity of holidaymakers in Laos has substantially improved in latest times. The laidback Laos atmosphere has shown to be properly-liked to all those who are wanting for a calming holiday. When commonly mistaken for laziness, the easygoing life style in Laos has with regards to peace and serenity than something else.

Some of the popular locations in Laos are Pha That Luang which is a temple centered shut to Vientiane, Champasak which shows temples identical to all those found in Cambodia. Champasak is now a globe heritage web-site. Vang Vieng is a favorite cave diving location. Cave diving is a.k.a. spelunking. Tham Nong Pafa Cave was only observed in 2004 and is one of the most popular destinations. It is often a cave that contains as many as 200 Buddha statues, the statues inside are of various sizes. Laos is effortlessly available via air travel or even via overland routes from any of its neighbors.

My View

While I have been to Laos on quite a few occasions, its bad infrastructure usually means that I have restricted my exploits to Luang Prabang (for a few of days) and the capital Vientiane.

Immediately after the rigours and commercialisation of Thailand Laos is a breath of fresh air.You can get to Laos by air, from Bangkok nevertheless it is far extra preferable and a ton much more enjoyable to enter through the Friendship Bridge from Nong Khai.Nong Khai is a common border city total of chancers, smugglers, illegals and basic lowlife in quick it is great fun. Well worth a check out just for the large catfish served by the restaurants dotted along the Mekong.Quite a few travel agents in Nong Khai will set up a visa for you. Final time I was there they had been charging about twenty bucks, for this they organized the visa and you acquired a lift across the bridge and had been met by a taxi the other side for the short journey into Vientiane. You can organise it for oneself, but it is a long stroll across the bridge and a scrum the other side to get transport, be civilised expend the $20.

Laos Overland Journey ' Your Ticket to the Natural and Cultural Wonders of the Country

by Exotissimo Traveler

Laos is approximately 230000 square kilometers. In case you were wondering, it is not a big country at all. In comparison, Vietnam is approximately 331000, Thailand is at about 514000, Myanmar at around 678000. This makes an overland journey around the country a doable task. And it makes it becomes easier considering the relaxing and laid back air the country naturally exudes.

Start off with a bang! Begin your journey at the UNESCO Heritage town of Luang Prabang. The place's glittering temples, hints of European influence, tree-line boulevards and overall cleanliness have done its job in impressing people. What do you think? Pay a visit to a local art exhibition and partake in a Lao tea-tasting ceremony. Ready for some work? The 328 steps of Mopunt Phousi should give you a bit of a work out. But the reward is justified a bird's eye view of the town and surrounding countryside.

Your stay here is more than just Luang Prabang. Just off the town boundaries are two interesting and quite contrasting sites. You can't help but feel a little puzzled by Pak Ou Caves. Why? Have you noticed the thousands of Buddha statues? Who put them there? Why? All will be answered there. Once you have deciphered the mysteries of Pak Ou, head over to the refreshing waters of Kuang Si Falls. Yes, go on ahead and jump in. It is tempting, isn't it?

Hop in and head on over to Vang Vieng. Traveling along the scenic Route 13, stop by Kasi and enjoy some locally produced fruit. As you make your way to Vang Vieng, you can't help but be impressed by the limestone karsts that seemingly burst out of the ground. And to add to the natural beauty of the place, a river runs right through them. Just doing absolutely nothing is time well spent here. Or if you're the active type, trek around and explore these caves. Just don't forget to observe the sunset. It is a beauty here!

And now on to Vientiane. And you will get there by a Nam Ngum Lake trip. You'll slowly cruise the waters as you take in the smooth and quiet aura of the place. Witness countryside Laos at its best here.

You'd be surprised to know that Vientiane is the capital of Laos. Yes, this small little town. But then again, haven't a lot of things in Laos surprised you? Explore the place and discover the many monuments that dot the city, ranging from the historical Wat Sisaket, the national symbol that is Pha That Luang and Laos' own version of the Arc de Triomphe. If Lao coffee has eluded you throughout this trip (it'd be very surprising if that is the case) then take a sip here, recapping your Overland Laosjourney.

Vang Vieng In Laos

Laos - Laid Back and Inexpensive Holiday   by Sebastian Harley

The world is a vast place and many of us want to experience as much of it as we can. Laos can provide an interesting and unique experience for the world traveler but it's first important to understand what it can and can't present you with to determine if it's just the type of place you'd like to visit. While there are many adjectives to describe countries in this region, Laos often gets slapped with the label "forgotten". But this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Laos lends itself to those people who enjoy a laid back lifestyle and love the concept of throwing back a few cold ones while taking in the sunset. Although it used to be known as Laos PDR, meaning Lao People's Democratic Republic, it's been adopted to really mean Laos - Please Don't Rush. This is often the best way to describe what awaits you on your journey and there are some magnificent things to take in along the way. The first question that is often raised, though, is how you get in. You will need a tourist visa which can be obtained when you arrive. You'll also need to bring one passport photo for this as well.

Once you are in the country, what are the best things to do and what should you know about Laos? First, you should understand the currency. Due to its economic situation, things can be purchased for dirt cheap and the rule of thumb is that $20US can usually get you by comfortably per day. Even $10US can get you by fairly comfortably. Laos' form of currency is known as the kip but is only usable in country. The going exchange rate is about 8500 kip to the US dollar but the US dollar is accepted by most people. Just be prepared for less than ideal exchange rates, sometimes up to 10% below the market.

Be sure to definitely take a dip in an herbal sauna on your journey. At only 10,000 kip, it can be quite enjoyable and affordable. Also, many people enjoy trekking the mountainous regions of northern Laos. Your meals vary from city to city, but usually $5US can purchase even the most elaborate courses. Lodging is inexpensive as well, where you can shack up for as little as $2US in a shared room. Even travelling by bus is cheap, usually coming in at around $2.50US to get from Vientiane to Vang Vieng. Be sure to pay Laos a visit you wont regret it.

Pak Ou Caves

The Pak Ou Caves of Laos

By

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Buddha statues, incense and flowers offering at the entrance of the lower Pak Ou Cave (Photo credit: Wikipedia)"]Buddha statues, incense and flowers offering a...[/caption]

For over a thousand years, Lao people have been visiting the Pak Ou Caves on the shore of the Mekong River. At first, according to some sources, they venerated a river spirit there. As Buddhism spread through Southeast Asia, the caves became important sites for Buddhist worship. Those on a Laos holiday can visit the caves, where a beautiful sight awaits: they are filled with thousands of Buddha statues, large and small.

Tham Ting: the lower cave

Open to the air, this jagged slice in the rock is a short climb above the river's shore. In some ways it is the most stunning, as it is easy to see everything the cave holds. The Buddhas, most of them very small, are arranged on natural rock ledges and in nooks. A shrine, bedecked in yet more Buddhas, offers a place to kneel and pray, and you may see locals and Southeast Asian tourists placing incense and small offerings there. This cave really is a highlight on any Laos holiday - as well as, arguably, one of the best photo opportunities for those who want to capture an aspect of the Lao people's religious beliefs and customs.

Tham Phum: the upper cave

Climb up a fairly long and steep stretch of steps and you will reach Tham Phum, the upper cave. Pack a torch for your Laos holiday if you plan to visit Tham Phum, as it goes deep into the rock where no natural light reaches. With a torch, it reveals another amazing display of Buddhas, containing the majority of the alleged four thousand figures that fill the two caves. Without, it is a dark and mysterious place, sporadically lit by other visitors' torches and camera flashes. However you see it, Tham Phum is well worth the climb.

How to visit the caves

On an organised Laos holiday, a visit to the Pak Ou Caves is almost always part of the itinerary. For those travelling independently, the caves are easy to reach. Situated twenty-five kilometres from Luang Prabang, the best option is to travel by boat. It's very easy to arrange a place on one of the tourist vessels that sets out in the morning, or to privately hire one of the boatmen throughout the day. The journey takes about an hour and a half each way. There is also a land option, taking a tuk-tuk to the opposite shore and then catching a ferry, but this is considerably less scenic.

Laos is often a surrounded on four sides by Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar. When equated with its neighbors Laos is not as popular. This yet doesn't mean that Laos has much less to offer you. One particular of the reasons that Laos is much less regarded is that it is a landlocked country. In the era just before traveling by plane, seamen carry the news about new and exciting locations; Laos possessing no sea access is less heard of when equated with its neighbors. Laos historically has been absorbed and conquered by neighboring kingdoms of Siam and Khmer. Laos has a powerful Buddhist tradition and is the place to find several temples and has a significant population of monks.

The capital of Laos is Vientiane; it truly is a beautiful city and is notable for its relaxed atmosphere. Laos is home to numerous Buddhist temples and feature pleasurable Buddhist architecture. Travel Tips and advice from Active Travel Laos

 by Daisy Nguyen

After years of war and isolation, Southeast Asia's most pristine environment, intact cultures and quite possibly the most chilled,
Vientiane Airport Terminal Interior

out people on earth mean destination Laos is fast earning cult status among travelers. Active Travel Laos shows some travel tips and advice in Laos.

Laos is a country that offers plenty of challenging terrain, interesting sites and activities for the adventurous. You can kayak or go boating down the Mekong, trek through jungles atop an elephant, go exploring and even rock-climbing in limestone caves, hike mountains in search of remote and ancient temple ruins or camp out in wildlife conservation parks.

Below on this Laos Country Guide is some useful travel information for visitors contemplating a trip to Laos, including suggestions on where and when to go, visa requirements, money used, information about Laos food and drink as well as a handy Travellers' Dos and Don'ts list.

Traveller Dos and Don'ts

- Do dress modestly when entering temples, museums, official buildings and government offices; no shorts or sleeveless shirts, tank tops or beach wear. Shorts that cover the thighs are acceptable everywhere else. Be clean and neat in appearance whenever possible.
- Do like the locals and keep your sense of time flexible. Expecting punctuality will often lead to frustration.
- Do remove shoes when entering temples and homes (it is convenient to wear slip-ons or sandals)
- Don't point your feet towards people or Buddha images. When sitting in a temple, keep legs together and to the side in a mermaid position.
- Do consider leaving a small donation when visiting temples.
- Don't take pictures posing with Buddha images, handle, climb or sit on them
- Don't, if you are a woman, touch monks, hand them objects, sit with or talk to them outside of temples. Any offerings need to pass through the hands of a man first.
- Do ask permission before taking pictures of people, particularly in villages outside the cities where the people may have superstitions against being photographed.
- Don't touch people or children on their heads.
- Don't lose your temper in public - speaking loudly and angrily is often counterproductive.
- Don't engage in public displays of affection.
- Do greet someone who is greeting you - by nop, handshake or a polite bow and smile - but don't offer a kiss!
- Do respect the Laos' interpersonal space - there is little physical contact or closeness between individuals who are not family.
- Don't be surprised if someone goes right past you to get to something first - Laos generally do not queue up for anything.
- Do bargain for goods in markets and shops (except where there are fixed prices) but do so with a good attitude and smile. Prices are generally not inordinately high to begin with as they may be in other Asian cities.

One of the main reasons to take a detour via Luang Prabang in Laos is the outstanding food on offer. The town is known throughout Southeast Asia and in expat circles for being a gourmet's paradise, where local Laotian dishes via with top quality French-inspired cuisine to get the attention of your taste buds.

Like the majority of countries in this part of the world, the standard Laotian diet is comprised of dishes based around rice and curry, but there is much more to Laotian food than this - as the restaurants of Luang Prabang will show you.

For a taste of local flavours served up by friendly, welcoming staff, you might want to check out one or two of the following restaurants:

· Maly Lao - a laid back and comfortable restaurant which offers a friendly atmosphere to go with its wholesome and hearty food. Laotian specialties on show include dishes of water buffalo - a much more succulent meat than beef in this part of the world - venison, freshwater fish from the nearby Mekong River and even turkey. Dishes can be as spicy or as mild as you want and the meal is best served accompanied by a locally-produced rice wine or a glass of the excellent Beerlao, the country's national beer.

· Paradise - another cozy and comfortable local place where tourists can sit and eat alongside Luang Prabang natives. Located among the trees on the edge of town, it's a picturesque spot to kick back with a cold Beerlao and enjoy some local delicacies like Mekong River squid fried up in a sweet & sour sauce or another local favourite, aw laam - baked meat served alongside green beans and aubergine.

· Mr Hongs - another favourite haunt with people who want to enjoy a bit more of a local experience mingling among the Luang Prabang natives, Mr Hong's place is home to a fantastic value for money menu offering local dishes which include salads - both spicy and non-spicy - plus plenty of vegetarian food and lots of aubergine-based dishes. Later in the day Mr Hong's place turns into a bar as well where visitors can kick back with a good strong cocktail to enjoy the sunset by.

For dedicated vegetarians there are choices to be enjoyed in Luang Prabang too. Many Buddhists choose to follow vegetarianism and as such the traveller can usually find something appropriate to eat pretty easily and with the minimum of fuss. A couple of vegetarian restaurants are listed below, but should you have any trouble finding them, don't hesitate to ask the staff at your Luang Prabang city centre hotel.

· Somchanh - popular with vegetarians for some time now, this place offers a relaxed environment in which to eat and is home to probably the biggest choice of veggie food in the town.

· Naunenapha - another restaurant which offers a pretty but relaxed location and atmosphere, Naunenapha sets up its tables outdoors so that diners can take in the street scenes while they eat. Popular among the backpacking crowd thanks to its menu offering local Laotian, some Thai and also even western vegetarian food, Naunenapha is also pretty decent value for money. Famous around the town for the quality of its vegetarian curries, the restaurant also allows people to bring in their own freshly-baked bread from the local bakeries.

Sala Prabang Luang Prabang

What Exactly Is A Buddha Wat

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="240" caption="Luang Prabang Wat (Photo credit: ¡kuba!)"]Luang Prabang Wat[/caption]

By

Buddha Wat means a temple for Buddhists. These temples are located in Cambodia, Laos or Thailand. The word "wat" literally means "school". In Laos, however, "Wat" is spelled as "vat" . Basically, wat or vat is a Buddhist temple as well as a school where the Buddhist monks reside. A site which does not have any resident Buddhist monks cannot be called a wat strictly but sometimes, even the ruins of an ancient Buddhist temple is called a wat.

In Thailand, a wat has come to be any place of worship except for a mosque. For example a Chinese temple of either Buddhist or Taoist origin is called wat cheen, a hindu temple is a wat khaek and a Christian church is called as wat kris or wat krit.
Some important parts of a wat are Chedi which means a conical or bell shaped building. Chedi often houses the relics of Buddha.

Viharn which is a prayer or a meeting room.
Mondhop which is the library containing all books related to the religion for the monks' use.
Sala which is a hall for relaxing as well as other purposes.
Ubosoth which is the holy prayer room. It is also called the ordination hall as the monks take their vows here. It is quite similar to the viharn but usually more decorated.
Living quarters of the monk, which are separated from the sacred buildings mentioned above.
Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Wat Suthat and Wat Bowonniwet in Bangkok and Wat Xieng Thong in Luang Prabang are some of the famous wats.

Luang Prabang To Vientiane

Laos Travel Experiences

By

Laos is a small country in South East Asia, bordering several major tourist destinations, such as Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar and China. This region is a great attraction for tourists from all over the world.

The Asian country of Laos is remarkable due to its amazing culture and authentic lifesyle admired by millions of tourists. One of the state symbols is Anusavari Arc de Triomphe built after the Second World War in memory of the killed Laotian soldiers.

Wat That Luang temple is a mysterious attraction. Inside, one will see a huge statue of Buddha, resting in a spacious, simply decorated hall. The statue seems to be carved of stone, and it looks magnificent.

Pha That Luang is an important national temple in Laos, which is a symbol of Buddhism religion and of the country's sovereignty. The full name of the temple means 'The World Precious Sacred Stupa'. Legend has it that the missionaries of King Ashoka of India founded the first stupa here in the 3rd century BC, but any convincing evidence of this event has not yet been found. The excavations, carried out directly in the temple, show that right at this point there used to be an ancient Khmer monastery in the 11th century. And when king Sethathirat moved the capital of Laos from Luang Prabang to Vientiane in the middle of the 16th century, he ordered to erect Pha That Luang temple in place of the ancient monastery. The construction started in 1566, and in four years four temples had been erected. At present, only two of them have survived: Wat That Luang Neua facing the north and Wat That Luang Tai facing the south.

Wat That Luang Neua used to be the residence of the Supreme Spiritual Guide of Buddhism in Laos. The temple is surrounded by a high bastion built in the 19th century to protect the temple against foreign invaders. Each part of the monument is different in terms of its architecture, which embodies the basic doctrines of Buddhism.

The Central Stupa of Thap Luang is decorated with the sculpture of a flower and Buddhist inscriptions, its walls are 45 meters high, and behind them there are some more classical Khmer sculptures.

Wat Phra Kaew was not only a monastery, but a royal temple as well. It was built in the 16th century specifically for the Emerald Buddha statue, but in 1788 it was moved to Bangkok. Since then, the Emerald Buddha statue is considered the most sacred relic, not only in Laos, but also for the people of Thailand.

The National Museum is another interesting attraction which contains valuable works of art, but the most expensive exhibit is a copy of a small statue of Buddha. The original Buddha was made of gold and weighed 50 kg. The statue was made in Ceylon in the first century AD. Now it is kept in a bank for security purposes as one of the holiest relics of Buddhism. Other famous destinations of the country include the Royal Monastery Wat Thong Kseng, which is called a 'golden city of temples' and is located on the banks of the Mekong. The Royal Monastery looks like a town, and its main pagoda is richly decorated with gilded carving.

The second largest church of the monastery, Kseng Tong, is a royal tomb. Wat Tat Luang monatery is located in the southern part of the city. The territory of the monastery is decorated with bamboo poles with long green ribbons. Wind rustles the construction, and the ribbons twist slowly, like dragons. People come here to pay homage to the 'father of rivers', the Mekong. They praise the great river in folk legends for its fertility and abundance. There, at the confluence of the Mekong and the Ou rivers, one will find the famous Pak Ou caves, which host thousands of Buddha statues created by monks more than 300 years ago. This place is thought to be inhabited by good spirits and is a site of traditional annual prayers.

If you plan a trip to Laos, or countries nearby, review the list of Laos tour operators or the list of travel agencies in Laos to get advice from local travel professionals.

Speed-Boating The Mekong River

Speed-Boating The Mekong River In Laos

By
La confluence du Tonlé Sap et du Mékong à Phno...

It was early morning when we left the village of Huay Xai in Northern Laos for the Mekong River, planning to get to Luang Prabang the same day. The 150 km journey along the river by speedboat would take half a day, breaks included.

Contrary to the advice given by our Lonely Planet guidebook we had decided to take a speedboat, because our hostess at Chiang Mai had recommended this alternative. Traveling on a big, slow river boat would have taken two days and required an overnight stay at the village of Pak Peng.

There were a lot of people at the pier when we arrived and the small speedboats set out one by one as soon as they were full. We were among the last to board and when stepping on the boat we saw right away that we had made the wrong choice. There was no turning back however; the low, narrow boat was packed full of people and off we went.

The boat flew on the surface of the water at high speed, at times reaching 80 km/h, and we sat on the hard benches with our chins on our knees, space for each passenger being about 40 x 50 centimetres. After only half an hour's travel our muscles were cramped and we felt miserable. We watched the passing scenery with our earplugs on, because the noise from the motor was deafening. The Lao passengers also wore helmets and life jackets provided by the boat driver.

When the river is low, as it was then, accidents happen when speedboats bump into sandbars or sunken logs. Those who have not survived have been mostly local people who cannot swim.

Water splashed on our clothes and soon we were soaked to the skin. The sun was shining and the air was warm but I felt cold. Andy had a pained expression on his face; there was definitely too little room for a big man, particularly for one with occasional but severe lower back problems. I got a cramp on my left leg, but there was nothing I could do about it.

We had been promised that there would be a break every sixty minutes or so and after what felt like an eternity, the boat stopped. We discovered that our feet had gone to sleep and Andy's right foot was totally numb for at least ten minutes.

Luckily there was an additional stop when the boat motor suddenly started to act up. After landing on a sandbank our driver began to repair it and we hoped that he would not get it fixed too soon.

Stepping onto the golden sand dune and warming our sore muscles, we enjoyed our freedom. But then we came to think that we were in the middle of nowhere, only forest on both sides of the river. If the driver were not able to repair the motor, when would there be other boats coming to our rescue? We had not brought any food with us. And how long would our drinking water last?

We then saw two hunters walking on a ridge with guns on their shoulders. One was also carrying what to us looked like a wild boar. He came to the shore with his dog, threw down the boar and, unconcerned about our presence took off his clothes and plunged into the water. The dog remained watching over the boar but could not resist the temptation, started to bite into it greedily. When the man got out of the water, he raised hell, and the dog moved aside with his tail between his legs, waiting for his master to calm down. Finally the hunter left with the boar, the dog walking close behind him.

Our trip continued. One more hour of speeding down the Mekong and we would reach the next stop, the village of Pak Peng. Our minds were made up; we would get off there and rest our limbs.

When and how we would continue our journey would remain to be seen. A traveler's tomorrow is always a new adventure!

Apsara Hotel Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang, Laos - The Saffron City's Top Ten Draws

By

1. Old Royal Palace

On Sisavangong Road lies the double-cruciform-shaped Royal Palace, which dates back to 1904 and displays religious objects and gifts from foreign envoys. In 1975, when the monarchy was overthrown and the Royal Family were taken to re-education camps, the palace was given the more Maoist name of the National Museum.

2. Wat Mai

Set beside the Royal Palace, Wat Mai was built between 1718 and 1788. One of Laos' most beautiful temples, it once housed one of Asia's key statues: Luang Pabang's namesake statue, the 50 kg golden Pha Bang Buddha, now stored in a bank vault. Much Buddhist blood has been spilled fighting over this 2,000-year-old religious relic from Ceylon - captured twice by the Thais, it was eventually returned to the city in 1867 by the devout Buddhist and pacifist Thai King Mongkut. One can only wonder what the Buddha, who forbade people to make images of Him, would have made of people fighting to the death over them. Bereft of its top treasure, Wat Mai retains a magical and almost surrealistically hallucinatory feel, its perfectly-proportioned architecture complemented by decorative detail so exquisite that it seems to come from an Oriental fairy tale. A plaque commemorates 14 children of the penultimate King Of Laos, Sisavang Vong, who drowned in maybe the biggest accidental and simultaneous loss of offspring in history. The devastated King was comforted by some of his 15 wives (including the two who were his half-sisters) and by those 35 of his other children who he recognized as being his own.

3. Mount Phousi

To experience one of southeast Asia's most spectacular sunsets, cross the road from the Royal Palace and climb the 328 steps to the top of Mount Phousi, the town's most prominent landmark. Serried ranks of hills march into the distance, etched in a palette of hues of blues, pinks and oranges, whilst temple spires still dazzle atop the growing gloom.

4. Wat Xieng Thong (Golden City Temple)

One of Laos' most spectacular temple complexes, Wat Xieng Thong was built by the scourge of Burma, King Setthathirath, in 1560. A classic example of Luang Prabang style, it features a gracefully sloping roof, glass mosaic murals and legions of Buddha statues, large and small, whose abundance brings to mind the First Emperor of China's Terracotta Army. Eight columns, richly stencilled in gold, guide the eye to the serenest of Buddha figures, seemingly challenging the visitor to attain such contentment for himself. This was the last King of Laos' favourite temple and where he made his final devotions before being taken to a re-education camp in 1975. For those with the time and the inclination, this epitome of Oriental temple design can be a solace for the soul as well as a feast for the eyes: just devote a little time to sitting silently for a while and soaking up the serenity of the tranquil temple gardens of bougainvillea, frangipani and hibiscus, shaded by banyan and palm trees. Wonder whether such artistry can be other than divinely inspired as you watch the setting sun set the dazzling gold-leaf-overlaid Ramayana figures sculpted on the building's exterior on fire.

5. Night market

Open until 10pm, the night market unfolds at 5pm. Don't forget to buy some stamina-enhancing scorpion-and-cobra wine, for that occasion when you need that little bit more strength - just remember to ask a similar-sized shop assistant to taste it first, to make sure it contains the right proportion of poison. If you can't find a similar-sized shop assistant to be your guinea pig, you'll just need to try to find somebody back home who is daft or depressed enough to volunteer.

6. Fine Wine and Cakes

Wind up your day with dinner at one of the town's world-class restaurants, where full French flavours are showcased on light Laos backgrounds to sensational effect. Especially noteworthy is L'Elephant, which serves French and Lao food in an elegant yet still relaxed setting. The chef at Apsara fuses Lao and European cuisines in a unique menu that will delight even the most discerning tastebuds, whilst not forcing their owners to dig too deep to settle the bill.

7. Hill tribe villages

For the culturally curious no visit to Luang Prabang will be complete without a trip to its hill tribe villages. Especially noteworthy is the vivid finery on display at Ban Phanom, the cotton and silk hand-weaving village.

8. Wat Pa Phonphao

Built in 1959, during the reign of the last Lao king, Wat Pa Phonphao has a slightly odd 'cabinet of curiosities' feel, with the content of the murals ranging from the supernatural to the incongruously pornographic.

9. Pak Ou River Ride

The first French explorers arrived in Luang Prabang by boat, hoping to open up a new route for trade with China. Present-day travellers can shadow their adventures by taking day or overnight trips from the town. A popular daytrip is an excursion by covered wooden longboat along the Mekong River to Pak Ou Grottoes, 25 kilometres upstream from the town. The grottoes, sacred caves tucked into limestone cliffs and filled with hundreds of gilded and wooden Buddha statues, were once occupied by hermits, some of whom ended up spending their entire adult lives in isolation, contemplating the meaning of life, the universe and everything. Why anyone chooses to spend an entire lifetime in isolation is a mystery: maybe these hermits spent so long arriving at the answer that they forgot the question, so had to start over. Tham Ting cave, accessed directly from the riverbank by a stone stairway, is packed with hundreds of ancient Buddha images, all peering out over the river, their impact magnified by the peaceful remoteness of their setting.

After a picnic at the grottoes, travellers can detour up the Nam Ou tributary, with its soaring limestone cliffs. Lots of trade proceeds by boat in this direction, so if the river is in spate you will be treated to the sight of cargo boats running minor rapids. An excellent destination or stopping point up the Nam Ou is the village of Muang Ngoy, whose enchanting setting amidst lofty karst peaks makes it a beautiful place to stop for refreshment. If you decide to spend the night here, expect only basic accommodation.

10. Tad Sae Waterfall

When the baking heat becomes too much, relief is just a tuk-tuk ride away. Set 15 kilometres to the city's southeast, Tad Sae Waterfall consists of a series of vividly turquoise step waterfalls in calm surroundings, which are perfect for picnicking and bathing. The water is bracingly cold, but perhaps the inviting colour and a swinging rope from a large tree will entice you in. If too indolent to wallow under your own steam, hire an inner tube to use as a float, then bob around, with a drink in one hand and, perhaps, a good book in the other.
