Eco Friendly Places: Vang Vieng

I really feel too many people buy stupid amounts of plastic bottles, why not just have one, I have one 2 litre bottle and fill it up wherever I go.

Every year about 1.5 million tons of plastic go into manufacturing water bottles for the global market, using processes that release toxins into the atmosphere. That plastic requires up to 47 million gallons of oil per year to produce. And while the plastic used to bottle beverages is of high quality and in demand by recyclers, over 80 percent of plastic bottles are simply thrown away. Most bottles end up in landfills, adding to the landfill crisis.

It is always cheaper to get your bottle refilled than to buy a new one; there are always opportunities to get it refilled, even here in Laos, in restaurants, guesthouses and bars. The cost for a refill is usually 2,000 Kip for a litre, but often people will refill for free. Compare this to bottled water at 5000 kip or more. Just ask!

Alternatively buy a container with filter and pump, which means you would never have to buy water again, imagine how much you would save. (Sorry digressed a bit there.)

In Vang Vieng the eco/organic feel isn't too bad, some places do free refills, and a lot of the local proper Lao style restaurants give free water. There's also a bar called Fluid that has free water and refills.

In fact in Vang Vieng there are a number of volunteer programs, one at the organic farm where you can teach students English at the youth centre. You can also stay there and see how they grow all the organic veg and mulberry tea. There's also Yong-gus Farm, he has some really nice dorms made from mud, they're really clean, it's a nice place to relax and also learn vast amounts about the fruit and veg in Laos, how to live sustainably and also about recycling.

I went to volunteer at SAE Lao as well for a week or so. He has an organic farm and is also building a community centre for students to study English after school and working with the local villagers to try and improve the lives of those in the local area. I recently saw a new project where 'Fluid' was working with SAE LAO project on making jewelery, bags, hats, clothes etc from recyclable materials, a great idea.

If you want to volunteer in Vang Vieng then there's at least three opportunities.

There are so many caves, 2 or 3 waterfalls, lots of jungle trekking, great cycling tracks and loads of secluded places to swim.

If you're looking for some alternative bars I'd recommend Falcony or Jai Dee's in town. Out of town, Fluid is 4km north of town, it has some interesting artwork, and is a great place to chill for the day. Their bamboo hammocks on the rooftop are really comfy and there's lots of plants and garden space. The menu has some fresh foods, salads, fried veggie stuff and a good BBQ menu. The owners know a lot about the area too and are full of information about Vang Vieng. Alternative tunes also, chilled stuff and more electronic later in the day. Their website is very useful also.

http://www.vangvieng.biz

I'd definitely recommend checking it out before you go to Vang Vieng.

Make sure you visit Vang Vieng.

Chasing Adventure in Champasak, Laos

Author: whl.travel

Adventure travellers who make the journey to the southern Lao province of Champasak, at the heart of Southeast Asia's so-called Emerald Triangle, are routinely wowed by the region's extensive undisturbed landscapes and spectacular national parks, as well as a fantastic mix of attractions and wonders, like the World Heritage site of Wat Phou, the waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau, the wetlands and wildlife of the Xe Pian Conservation Area and the quiet pace of life in the Four Thousand Islands.

Treks for Eco-Enthusiasts

The Bolaven Plateau is the uplands in the northeast of the province and site of stunning waterfalls, sweeping coffee plantations and ethnic minority villages. Hikers of all stripes often head straight here for both independent and guided tours.

One one- or two-day loop, best enjoyed in the company of a guide who can bring to life the region's unique natural history and culture, takes in hilltribe villages, visits the spectacular 120-metre Tad Fane waterfall – the tallest in Laos – and stops at a swimming hole and for some local coffee tasting.

Another guided walk for more experienced hikers spends two days in the Xe Pian Conservation Area, a vitally important protected zone of incredible biodiversity. Highlights include canoe rides, dense jungle paths and a homestay in a local ethnic village. Local guides call attention to the park's native medicinal plants and wildlife, like the endangered yellow-cheeked gibbon.

A second Xe Pian excursion heads to the fort-topped summit of Mount Asa on a half-day elephant ride through the forest.

Scenic Cycling Excursions

One of the best ways to appreciate scenery and interact with locals is to travel by bicycle. In Champasak, fit pedallers revel in a four-day tour from Pakse, the provincial capital, famous for its hand-woven cottons and silks, to the plantations and waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau, forest trails of Xe Pian and even a few local ethnic villages. After daily distances of 40 to 90 kilometers, bikers pass the night in homestays and ecolodges.

Independent travellers to the sleepy islands of Si Phan Don, also called the Four Thousand Islands – where the Mekong River reaches 18 kilometres in width and encompasses thousands of small islands – often find two wheels the best (and most budget) way to get around. On the largest island of Don Khong, a short ferry ride from the mainland, many guesthouses have steeds for rent for around 10,000 kip (US$1) a day.

In Si Phan Don, the one-day bicycle tour to an abandoned French railway that once linked Cambodia and Laos across an island called Don Khone also stops at the stunning emerald green Liphii waterfalls, close to the Cambodia border.

Zip-line Jungle Jaunts

Heart-stopping and high-flying jungle excursions too are on the menu for thrill seekers in Champasak. Two- and three-day tour packages head to the small village of Ban Nongluang (one hour by car from Pakse), the heart of zip-line fun.

A breathtaking canopy walk sets the stage for blasting off through the treetops. After a zip-line safety briefing, visitors strap in and speed through the jungle, delighting in unsurpassable views from above the dense forest, an elevation kept even at bedtime, as lodging is in tree houses. Real adrenaline junkies on a three-day package hit daredevil speeds on extended zips of up to 400 metres.

Laos - Special Unique of Asean

Buddhist temple at Royal Palace in Luang Praba...

by Activetravellaos

Considered by many seasoned travellers to be the untapped gem of Southeast Asia, the diverse landlocked country of Laos is full of surprises. From the mountainous northern highlands to the 4,000 Islands of the Mekong, this nation of just six million has an incredibly diverse geography to match its colourful culture.

Buddhism is the dominant theme of this communist nation, followed closely by the animistic traditions of the hill tribes. These ethnic minorities are a big part of what makes Laos so unique. It takes a long time to travel from the north of the country to the south, where the lengthy Mekong River flows into Cambodia. However, thanks to the steady growth of national airline Laos Airways, many urban centres in Laos can be easily reached by plane.

Top Things to See
There are so many amazing things to see in Laos, including beautiful temples, natural highlights, ethnic villages and rustic towns. It can however take days of bus travel to get from Luang Prabang to Pakse, so visitors with limited time may want to concentrate on one area of Laos. Of course, you can always opt to take a plane from the north to the south if you want to see both parts.

Ban Phanom Weaving Village
Even though it has become a bit commercialised, Ban Phanom is still one of the best villages in the north to see how Laos weaving is done. A visit here makes for a fun and easy excursion from Luang Prabang, and you can pick up great deals on silk and cotton textiles.

Lao National Museum
If you want a better understanding of the colourful history of Laos, make a visit to the country's main museum, housed in a lovely old French colonial mansion in the capital. Photos, relics and items used by both the royalty and the communist party are on display. Phone: +856 21 21 2462.

Luang Prabang
This UNESCO World Heritage site was once the capital of the ancient Lanna kingdom, and remains one of the most romantic and charming places in the world. Temples, monks and French colonial architecture greet you at every turn. With dozens of nice boutiques, guesthouses and the best shopping and dining in Laos, this town is a destination in its own right. It also makes an ideal base for further explorations of northern Laos.

Luang Prabang Night Market
The most charismatic market in Laos is open every night along the main street of Luang Prabang, which is closed to traffic in the evenings. Hundreds of vendors emerge from their villages to sell handicrafts, artwork and souvenirs.

Morning Market
If you are in Vientiane, get up early and head to the Talaat Sao, or Morning Market, where the capital's residents do their shopping every day. Besides the fascinating, bustling scene, visitors can buy everything from pirated DVDs to antique items.

Pak Ou Caves
If you visit Luang Prabang, take the short boat ride along the Mekong to check out these natural caves carved out of the sheer limestone cliffs along the river. Over the centuries, Buddhists have come here and deposited small images of the Buddha, resulting in an amazing display of icons. Visiting this unique site is a popular excursion.

Phra That Luang
The most important stupa in Laos is a national icon rising 44 metres high in the capital. Several structures have been built on the same auspicious site since the first Khmer temple here in the 12th century. This is a great place to witness it any Buddhist event in the capital.

Traditional Lao Dancing
Traditional Lao dancing resembles traditional dancing in Thailand and Cambodia, and is one of the most graceful displays of human movement you're likely to see. A great place to experience a special performance is in Luang Prabang at the Royal Theatre, which re-enacts the Ramayana several nights each week.

Vang Vieng
One of the most picturesque little towns in Laos lies midway between Luang Prabang and Vientiane, making it an ideal stopover. Limestone karsts form a backdrop, as do the surrounding rice fields and a lovely river that flows through the valley. Tubing, caving and other fun outdoor activities are big draws of this town, which has emerged as a major stop on the tourist trail.

Waterfalls
Laos has lots of water, and some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Southeast Asia. In the north, don't miss a day at Kuang Si Waterfall, just outside of Luang Prabang. Aqua blue water and swimming holes make this a great excursion. The southern Bolaven plateau has even more waterfalls, as rivers roll off the plateau on all sides, resulting in the country's highest falls among the dozens of beauties.

Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre in Luang Prabang

Dedicated to exploring the rich diversity of Laos’ ethnic minorities, the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre in Luang Prabang is a great place to begin a Southeast Asia vacation. An independent non-profit museum, the organization seeks to acquaint visitors with a better understanding of the ethnic groups that inhabit the region. Situated at the foot of Mt Phosui, the heritage building features long standing exhibitions documenting traditional costumes, tools, and artifacts used by tribes including the Hmong, Akha, Tai Dam and
Kmhmu
. Laos is home to 49 ethnicities consisting of over 160 ethnic groups, making it something of cultural hodgepodge.

For those who are interested in learning more about the cultural heritage and fascinating history of Lao PDR, the Traditional arts and Ethnology Centre is definitely the place to start! As well as this, the on site ‘Le Patio Café is well worth a visit. The French-style café features ceiling fans, comfortable wicker chairs and WiFi, amid a wonderful mountainous backdrop. Serving up delectable dishes that include local delights and a selection of baked goods, it is not unusual to find the local expats popping in for a coffee while enjoy the relaxed surrounds.

While this meditative backwater is often praised for its temples and UNESCO World Heritage Site status, the people play a large part in what one might describe as being the laid back mentality and inherent charm of the country. Visiting the sustainably motivated Traditional Arts and Ethnology centre prior to doing a homestay or trek will no doubt enhance the experience. This is also a great place to pick up some unique and skillful handicrafts, art, textiles and jewelry.

Kamu Lodge - Eco-tourism

Kamu Lodge, Laos by richardmichaelshaw

Author: nattyAT

Well described as Eco –tourism at its best, the Kamu Lodge is the very embodiment of a sustainable property. Striving to immerse guests in local culture while simultaneously giving back to the community, this forward thinking property redefines the idea of ‘luxury'. Built around the philosophy that contact with nature is an essential component for relieving stress, guests are invited to take a step back and appreciate the simple pleasures in life.

Juts three hours upstream from Luang Prabang, the Kamu Lodge consist of canvas tented-style accommodation imported from South Africa. Each of the 20 comfortable tents features comfy beds, solar-powered hot water, electricity, and private bathrooms. Private balconies overlooking the Mekong make for perfect relaxation spot to ponder the significance of this might river.

Northern Laos, like most of the country is seemingly untouched by the modern world. Pristine jungle, soaring mountains and sleepy rice paddies dominate. Inhabited by a number of ethnic minorities the identity of the Kamu Lodge was inspired by the indigenous ‘Kamu hilltribe'. An essential part of the Kamu experience is for visitors to learn more about the fascinating culture and rich traditions of these people. Guests are invited to try their hand at traditional fishing, rice farming, weaving and even panning for gold in the silt of the Mekong.

Kamu Lodge incorporates the area's beautiful natural surroundings into its restaurant by creating meals from fresh local ingredients and serving them in an outdoor setting. Meals are served in raised thatched enclosures amidst the paddies, on floor mats and cushions gathered at low tables laid with banana leaves. Built entirely of natural and locally sourced materials, enjoying a meal at Kamu Lodge is in itself worth the trip up stream.

Two of the world's top-three hotels accommodate guests in safari tents... just like Kamu Lodge. Our 20 free-standing lodges are hybrids actually. Thick-walled tents shut out the elements while a sturdy thatch roof guards against rain and sun.   However rustic the look and feel, Kamu's mattresses guarantee a good night's sleep. In the spirit of sustainable lodging, solar panels fixed to the roofs gather just enough juice to keep your fan turning all night and your interior lit. Every lodge features a white-washed stone annex, and the familiar trappings of a traditional bath. Hot water flows from Kamu's shower heads. And there's ample space to maneuver about as you make your daily ablutions. On the apron of every lodge, a thatch-covered veranda and its rustic easy chairs encourage passive enjoyment of a timeless view over the slow-moving Mekong.

Luang Prabang - Land of Temples

By Co-Author: Yen Giang
Mosaic detail, Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang

The first day I arrived in Luang Prabang, I was surprised by the tranquil scenery and sanctuary atmosphere it possesed. This is a very special city with no modern buildings or houses with more then two stories. That's why people say Luang Prabang is a small town the size of a big city.

As I wake up around 6:00 am, after a good night sleep at the guesthouse I'm privileged to stay at, I walk down the street and suddenly there is an orange line rising up from the dawn. Monks, from the temples, are walking in a line down the street in front of kneeling women with baskets filled with sticky rice, fruits and other foods. My host prepares a basket of fruits for me so I can join with the Lao women in their Alms ceremony. My host is a very careful women, she explains the culture to me, what I should and shouldn't do. People here believe alms will credit them merits which are very important in Buddhism. A monk can earn merits through his meditation, chanting, praying and rituals. There is also another way for women to earn merits, they can cook and serve food to the monks. Whenever the monks pass by, the women pick a food out and put it randomly into the bowls of the monks, just make sure that you don't overfill their bowls.

I can't hide the eagerness on my face when I see a little monk pass by me. I pick a banana and put it into his bowl. He must be around 14 years old, he smiles and bows in front of me. It's a magical moment for me in this mystical town. I have some pity for the monks however, as I see a group of tourists taking flash photography with their digital cameras everywhere the monks go. Imagine if you were a monk who felt like the paparazzi wouldn't stop taking pictures of you. I feel for them and can appreciate their patience and how polite they are.

In Luang Prabang, you can't miss the chance to visit all of the temples here. There isn't any other place in the world like Luang Prabang with over 100 temples and monasteries and a population of only 25,000 people. The first must see temple is Wat Xieng Thong. "At the tip of the peninsula, Wat Xieng Thong was built in 1560, to remember King Chanthaphanith. Under the request of King Sisavangvong, the temple was restored in 1928 and once again in 1960. As I visit the temple, I touch the detailed mosaics on the doors and pillars. I am fascinated by the murals on the wall and I can feel that there is something very sacred and immaculate about this place. Seeing the harmonious structure, designs, lights and colors it's no surprise that Wat Xieng Thong is considered the most beautiful temple in Laos.

My journey to Luang Prabang was one of culture and history and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there, I hope to come back soon and experience more, with so much to see here, I know I could spend a lot more time exploring the town and befriending its people.

My Top 10 Favourite Places to Stay in Laos

Français : Luang Prabang : marché du soir (soi...

Author: Alex Aziz

Laos is a stunning country to visit especially if you are after a unique travel experience. Laos is rich in culture with several places such as Luang Prabang being designated as world heritage sites. The country is very safe and the people are incredibly hospitable.

Accommodation is improving and Laos has some excellent places to stay whether staying in the city or a secluded hideaway far away from it all in the mountains or on one of its many rivers. The Capital Vientiane and the world heritage city of Luang Prabang have some great quality hotels some with exquisite colonial charm and all with a genuine friendly service. Getting away to countryside offers stunning views of the countryside. This list is not in any particular order as different hotels offer different experiences some offering the best facilities and others offering the best views. Here are my favourite ten places to stay in Laos taking in a varied selection from across the country.

Seng Arun Bungalows

Set on the banks on the Mekong on Done Khone Island these are small family run bungalows, they are pretty basic in western terms as there is still no electricity on the Island, but the wooden styled bungalows are comfortable, all with en suite showers. They overlook the old French Railway Bridge, with their excellent balconies the day could be spent relaxing on a hammock with a book and enjoying the great view.

La Residence Phou Vao

Set in the World Heritage City of Luang Prabang the city is full of old colonial charm and La Résidence Phou Vao Hotel complements this charm, built in the 1950's and renovated in 2001 it is set at the top of Vao hill. The hotel gives stunning views of the surrounding mountains of Luang Prabang as well as Phou Si Temple and the town. It also offers first class facilities and amenities such as a spa and swimming pool. The hotel uses traditional rosewood, cotton and silk so that the modern facilities and rooms do not lose their tradition feel.

Vansana Resort

Vang Vieng is a truly great town lying on the Nam Song River with stunning limestone karsts to its west. Vang Vieng was previously known as a backpacker town with cheap basic accommodation and lots of adventure activities to choose from. There are now however more upmarket places to stay now inviting a different class of tourist. The Vansana Resort is one of these on these built on the banks of the Nam Song River and boasting excellent amenities. The rooms are excellent with private balconies where you can enjoy the view of the mountains. Or enjoy one of the facilities on offer such as a traditional massage a meal on the balcony on the river or a swim in its top rate swimming pool.

Pakbeng Lodge

A few years ago when travelling between the Thai / Laos border town of Chiang Khong / Houei Sai to Luang Prabang the two day boat trip involved a very uncomfortable overnight stay at Pak Beng. This was an unavoidable stop when taking the slow boat. Recently however the opening of the Pak Beng Lodge has changed all of that, with great views of the Mekong and great facilities it has made the two day journey to Luang Prabang and unforgettable one in the best possible way.

Chan-a-Mar Resort, Nong Khiaw

Probably one of the only luxury bungalow's in this part of Laos, set in Nong Khiaw amidst a backdrop of mountains and two rivers this place truly gives the feel of the real Laos. The bungalows have been individually designed with local materials, each with its own bathroom, hot shower and private balcony offering stunning views.

Hotel Laos What Are 2011’s Top Picks?

Are you in the fortunate position of jetting off to Asia soon, and are looking for some great Hotel Laos? Look no further. With the ideas and suggestions you are about to read, you’ll have absolutely no problem choosing the best place to stay that suits your individual needs. There are some specific things you need to think about. Whatever you do, don't just take my advice as the utter and completel truth. You need to research lots of different sources - on and offline - to get a balanced view. My opinion is all that I can offer - everyone filters information through the lens of their own life Budget is your first priority. After all, overspend here and you may have to forego other treats. This is fine if that’s what you want – problems crop up when your choices lead you into situations that you were unaware of. Don’t get caught outThere are no right or wrong solutions when it comes to this, so just take what comes to mind - don't deny your own needs! The next stage is finding your perfect hotel in this area is a bit more fun: visualise your perfect Laotian hotel! What would your room be like? Imagine it now. Is there a porter? 24 hour room service? Once you’ve done this, make a note of which features are truly important to you. Of course you might not be able to have them all, but at least you’ll be aware of what you’d be willing to go without in order to enjoy something different. Example: the best part of your hotel daydream is the swimming pool, and you realise you’d prefer a rural hotel with pool than daily excursions.Think about the core purpose of your holiday. On first glance you might think you’re going to Laos on a sightseeing tour. But wait a minute. Say you booked the holiday while relaxing at Christmas, but by the time you land you’re actually very stressed. In this state sight seeing can be nothing but another source of stress. What you might really need is somewhere to relax, rather than a hotel on the tourist trail. Now you’ve laid the groundwork, here comes the enjoyable bit – browsing the web and seeing which Hotel Laos you fancy. Look at several websites, keeping the list you’ve made in the previous step. Make sure the websites own testimonials are backed up by real independent reviews. Who do you know who has been to Laos? Where do they recommend? Where would they avoid? If you aren’t so lucky to know other travellers to the area, then you’ll have to rely on TripAdvisor. A rule of thumb: generally the greater the number of reviews, the more balanced and objective a view you get.You may well want a hotel that reflects the spirit of Laos itself. If you have the budget and you’re set on staying in Luang Prabang then a very creative idea is to choose somewhere that reflects the explosions of color you see everyday in the town – the burnt sienna of the monk’s robes and the masses of frangipanis everywhere. The town is surrounded by beautiful mountains. In fact the tourist industry’s slogan is “simply beautiful” – so try to find a room with a simple design. So there you have it – some useful pointers to choosing the best Hotel Laos for your next trip. Hopefully it will prevent any major catastrophes! Also, what bad holiday experiences have you suffered? What can you take away from these? These bad times often teach us alot - or at least it is if you learn from it.

Relaxing Holidays in Asia

By

Most people travel to Asia for exciting adventures replete with jungle treks and forays into buzzing metropolises. Indeed, this is an exciting part of the world and for many people it represents a very different atmosphere which begs to be explored. That said, the area offers some great spots for relaxing as well and you can find some amazing, affordable place to let all of your cares slip away. Here are three Asian destinations where you can chill out and unwind after your exhilarating adventures.

Many people come to India to see one of the most diverse and populous countries. Stretching across a huge swathe of land this is a traveller's paradise and you can travel from swelling cities to the unbelievable heights of the Himalayas in one trip. It also has some great beaches, particularly in Goa a province which has become very popular with pleasure seekers. You can find many good resorts here and generally spend your time lazing around or surfing in the warm waters. There are also some great things to see as the area has some beautiful buildings left over from colonial times.

Cambodia is one of the most interesting countries to visit. It has a startling beauty and one of the world's finest attractions in the temples of Angkor Wat. Yet it is also a thoroughly sad place as it was not too many years ago that it was held in the throes of one of the world's greatest tragedies, perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge. You can come here to see the temples and come to terms with some sobering history, yet it also has some great beaches. Sihanoukville is the best place to relax as it has a beautiful beach and an array of fun things to do - the area also has a reasonably lively social scene so you can relax during the day and head out at night. The weather is absolutely wonderful as it looks out onto the beautiful Gulf of Thailand.

Finally, you can head to Laos, one of the most thoroughly relaxing places in the world. The pace of life here is very slow and in many places you will find little traffic. That said there is a reasonably developed tourist trade and you will find many hotels and restaurants that cater to travellers. It is particularly worth visiting Vang Vieng a beautiful town on the banks of the Namsong River: the community is surrounded by incredible limestone cliffs and you can relax in its many pleasant hotels.

Asia is an amazing place to visit for many different reasons, indeed it has great scenery, food, natural beauty and relaxing spots. Holidays to Goa, Cambodia and Laos can be incredibly relaxing. Best of all these destinations are generally very cheap as hotels and food in Asia can be bought at bargain prices - this makes beachside retreats here a particularly good idea as you will find them much less expensive than similar holidays in other parts of the world.

Chris Miles is an accomplished travel blogger. He enjoys all types of holidays, especially those which take him to the beach.

In the hearth of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO heritage town of Southeast Asia, Villa Maly is peacefully located there. It was once the home of royal residence, today it becomes an exquisite boutique hotel. The guests rooms of Villa Maly occupy five different building, including Plumeria, which was once the home of a royal family and it is still contain the noble ambiance. Common to each and every room are the inimitable architectural appeal. With European aesthetics are also great at Villa Maly. Marelli fans, four-poster beds and classic arrangements make each room

About Luang Prabang, once was royal capital of Laos, Luang Prabang nestles up against the great Mekong River. Its temples, the architecture of the royal palace and its traditional wooden house create a timeless ambiance that hardly find elsewhere. UNESCO also declared it as a World Heritage Site in 1995.
In a single glance, the town can be embraced by summiting, via 355 steps, one of the Luang Prabangs principal attractions Mt. Phou Si. From here, the buildings seem subsumed by coconut trees. Indeed, regulations prohibit new buildings from rising higher than the trees leafy bowers.

Today, the royal palace is a museum, housing holy icons, paintings and china. Another, more fantastic collection of relics lies upstream along the Mekong in the Pak Ou Caves. At the Mekong's confluence with the Nam Ou, a cave in a bluff on the river keeps a pantheon of small Buddhist statues.

UNESCO hailed Luang Prabang as the "the best preserved city in Asia" when the organization inscribed the destination in 1995. Nothing has changed about that since.

Laid Back Tempo, Temples, Colonial Flair and Green Nature; Put Luang Prabang on your Wish List   by Exotissimo Traveler

Nothing evokes the character and essence of Laos like the cultural capital of Luang Prabang, filled with temples, old and new in a tree-lined street environment of a town. To top it off, colonial buildings here and there further add to its character. Did we mention the laid back atmosphere? Perhaps its location by the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers has something to do with that. Walk down the streets of Luang Prabang and be mesmerized by her offerings!

The city rose to prominence as the capital of the first Lao kingdom in 1353 until 1975. There was a bit of a down period for the town, but until 1989, when Luang Prabang re-opened its doors to the world, the town rose back to prominence and was eventually declared a Heritage Site by UNESCO.

So, what to do at this laid back place filled with amazing sites and a relaxing atmosphere? You can find a spot to sit, have a nice drink and just watch the slow pace of life develop before your eyes. It surely is picturesque, with all the charisma of a quaint European town mixed with the wonderful, and unexplainable charm of Southeast Asia.

Early birds always get the rewards. Here in Luang Prabang, you

Want to know what's around Luang Prabang? Head out and see Laos' Elephants and Hilltribe Folk   by Exotissimo Travel

Luang Prabang is truly a picturesque city (or town, as some may call it) worthy of its UNESCO World Heritage status. The city is well known for its glittering and graceful temples and monasteries as well as old colonial structures and tree-lined boulevards. There is also so much more to see around the town's vicinity, which Exotissimo is more than happy to take you to see and experience.

If you love trekking, elephants and witnessing a lifestyle and culture unchanged for generations, then check out Exotissimo's Trek and Hilltribe Discovery day trip program. First stop, Elephant Village. Learn about these gentle giants as you interact with the mahouts and ride Laos' most revered animal. This is as close to seeing and experiencing these animals in the wild as you can get from actually venturing out into the wild.

You'd better have those hiking shoes on because you will now use them! After your elephant experience and a boat ride across the Nam Khan River, your trek will officially start. Walk through the Lao countryside as you make your way to Kamu villages. Kamus are originally Lao people, so these very villages may have been here for hundreds upon hundreds of years.

The next leg of your trek takes you to a Hmong village. These guys are expert weavers, which you can tell just by looking at their elaborate and distinguishable clothes. Feel free to ask about their skills and history as you sit down for lunch at one of their houses. Afterwards, check out the village a little bit more where more of the Hmong's traditional lifestyle and culture are revealed to you.

Your enlightenment of Laos' ethnic groups does not end there. On your way back to your hotel, make a stop at the Traditional Art and Ethnology Center. This museum is dedicated to the ethnic cultures in Laos, being the country's first exhibition dedicated to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of its traditional arts and lifestyles.

Does this one day adventure tour sound enticing to you? If it does, why not add it to one of our Laos tour? These programs have been carefully built so you can fully experience the highlights of this spectacular country as well as the lesser known destinations often passed on by the main tourist trails. Just contact us if you have any questions about Laos and how to combine our tours and day trips.

Luang Prabang Province

luang prabang province_2="luang prabang province"

Travel to Cambodia and Laos   by Ahsan

Head to the charming, tranquil, and laid-back Laos, which is favorite Asian destination for many people. Adapt yourself to the pace of life by cruising slowly down the Mekong, exploring river caves and admiring temples in the dreamy, monastic Luang Prabang.
Away to the south is Cambodia, a country where everyone you meet will have a story to tell. From Phnom Penh's wide boulevards, head north to Siem Reap to discover the magnificent Khmer ruins of Angkor, which just missed out on being added to the new list of the Seven Wonders of the World a few years ago.
Luang prabang, Laos:
Luang Prabang is rich in cultural heritage, known as the seat of Lao culture, with monasteries, monuments traditional costumes and surrounded by many types of nature's beauty. Luang Prabang province has a total population of 365000. The city itself is a rather sleepy town of 16,000 habitants with a handful of interesting temples and old French houses. Luang Prabang is now listed as a World Heritage site by the UNESCO.
Vientiane, Laos:
Compared to the hectic, bustling capitals in other Southeast Asia countries, Vientiane's deliciously relaxing atmosphere makes it feel like the small town it is. After you've done the round of temples, the best thing to do here has always been to wander down to the riverside, relax with a cold Beerlao - the Lao national beer - and watch the sun set over the Mekong.
Plain of Jars, Laos:
The Plain of Jars is one of the most enigmatic sights in the world. Here, in this forgotten corner of Asia, is a highland plains about 1000 meters above sea level, where you find giant-size stone jars, created and left behind by a civilisation that has now disappeared.
Angkor temples, Siem reap, Cambodia:
The temples of Angkor in Siem Reap are one of the most awe-inspiring religious complexes in the world. Between the 9th and 13th centuries, more than one thousand temples incorporating both Buddhist and Hindu influences were constructed. As a matter of fact, the Angkor Wat Temples area is much bigger than the Angkor Temple alone, being one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. Siem Reap province -- an expansive piece of flat land, covered in rice fields and brush -- is also home to an array of other ruins, such as Beng Mealea and Bantaey Srei.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia:
Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia. The town is spread out on the banks of two rivers. The main sights in town include Wat Phnom (great views over the city), the Silver Pagoda in the Royal Palace complex, (emerald Buddha and a Buddha made of solid gold), the National Museum, the Phnom Temple, the Orchid Garden, the central market and a 15th-century pagoda. You can also take a boat ride on the Mekong River to see the floating villages and a crocodile farm.
With Indochina Lands agency, travel to Cambodia and Laos, discover new cultures, rich History with great stories.

Laos - Special Unique of Asean   by Activetravellaos
