The Grand Luang Prabang

Almost nothing can be deemed as Important & Sacred in Southeast Asia as the White Elephant

Have you ever seen an elephant in real life? How about a white elephant? Thought so. These animals are so rare, yet they embody everything that is deemed important and sacred. Monarchs searched north, south, east and west for these guys. Some succeed, most don't. Why are they so revered? Let's take a look.

Its importance stems from the tales of Buddha's birth. On the eve of delivery, Buddha's mother dreamt of a white elephant presenting her with a lotus flower, a sign of wisdom and purity. Because of this story, white elephants became a symbol of fertility and wisdom. It also helps that these animals are few and far in between.

Definition of white elephant: a valuable but burdensome possession of which its owner cannot dispose and whose cost (particularly cost of upkeep) is out of proportion to its usefulness or worth. The meaning has its roots in the region. On certain cases, white elephants were presented or exchanged as a diplomatic gesture.  To receive a white elephant is considered a blessing yet is also noted for its nuisance. The animal's sacredness and the actual act of the monarch giving away something that valuable is a big enough of an action to show the king's good-will gesture. The downside though stems from its practical use, which comes to nil because of the labor laws protecting it. Plus, it was very expensive to care for. Despite this, to be given a white elephant is a high honor, and many will make the necessary sacrifices in order to receive and keep this gift.

There were several items a King needed in order to rule successfully: a perfect wife, riches, a capable chief minister, a swift horse and most importantly possession of white elephants. For a monarch to keep a white elephant, it signifies that they will rule with justice and power, and that the kingdom was blessed with peace and prosperity. Kings would divert a lot of time and energy capturing these animals. The more he had, the more prosperous his kingdom would be and the longer and more successful his reign would be as well. However, if any white elephants died during his reign, it foretold disaster for the King and his kingdom.

Today, white elephants are very rare. The last one to be discovered in the wild was in Myanmar in 1961. They are still highly venerated in Southeast Asia today with sculptures, wood carvings, paintings and murals depicting these animals in temples, museums and art galleries. Thailand's old flag has a white elephant depicted in the center.

Well, we would be lying if we told you you'd see a white elephant during your trip to Southeast Asia. But here's the next best thing; you can actually go up close and personal with these giant lovable creatures with our Luang Prabang Elephant Adventure daytrip. Or if you are looking for the grand regional tour, then look into our Southeast Asia Discovery package. Experience the grandeur and splendor of each country, basking in the scenery of glittering temples, magnificent ruins, vast countryside and of course each country's distinct culture and take on life. Depictions of white elephants will be spotted here and there. If you do find one, make sure everyone knows, including the authorities. They may just reward you for your efforts.

Laos Climate

laos climate_2="laos climate"

68 Official Ethnic Groups in Laos

Laos is landlocked and lies between Thailand, Myanmar, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. The Mekong River forms the countries western border and the Anna Mite Mountains form its eastern border with Vietnam.

The total land area is approximately 237,000 sq km. An area similar to that of the United Kingdom. The main features of the country are its mountains and the Mekong River valley.

Laos has a monsoon climate of a dry and a wet season. The dry season lasts from November to May with the cooler period in December and January. At its coldest, the temperatures can fall to as low as 15. The cold periods tend to be at night and early morning with colder temperatures at higher altitudes. During the hot period of the dry season, between March and May, temperatures can reach the high 30s. The rainy season is a lot cooler, and rainfall varies according to altitude. Generally speaking, the monsoon season produces severe rain that lasts for short periods of time. The wet months vary according to location, in Vientiane, they are from May to September, in Luang Prabang, and August is far wetter than any other month.

Parts of the Anna mite chain are covered with tropical evergreen forest, where rainfall is highest and in the south, tropical pine forests can be found.

Laos, the land of a million elephants and one of the last places to see old Indochina. The pace of Laos is slow and its people relaxed and friendly.

There are 68 official ethnic groups in Laos, belonging to three main groups.

For much of its history, Laos has been under the thumb of its neighbours at various times the Cambodians, Burmese, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Siamese. The result is that Laos has experienced great difficulty in establishing a national identity.

Laos folk music uses the Khen a set of pipes. Lam Wong is a popular folk dance where couples dance in circles to Lam Vong music.

It has a large number of animal species, including as many as 500 different birds. Reptiles include many snakes, including king cobras. There are a large number of lizards. Mammals include wild cats, bears, leopards and tigers. There are up to 500 wild elephants, although more than twice those numbers are in captivity. There are a number of rare species which include rhinos and wild cattle.

The Lao language is a member of the Tai language group, sometimes known as Tai Kadai or Kadai.

Where is the Best Place to Teach Overseas

Where is the best place to teach overseas? It is hard to decide where to go when you look at the scope of unique and exciting experiences that are available in the different regions around the world. This article is designed to give you information regarding the way your decision about where to teach overseas can affect your lifestyle while you are teaching abroad.

Leisure Activities

Choosing the best place to teach overseas may be tied up in the kinds of things you like to do outside of work. You can continue many of your favorite leisure activities while you teach overseas, or take up new ones. Many international teachers move to regions that allow them to indulge themselves in this way.

If you ski, then Europe and Korea are options you may consider. You can teach in Vienna for example and take a train to the slopes for the weekend.

Divers tend to look for international schools in Thailand or the Philippines. Thailand currently has many more international schools than the Philippines, so you are more likely to find a teaching job there.

Because most international schools are situated in urban or suburban areas, there is usually a wealth of activities you can take part in. While living in Bangkok I have attended Indian musical evenings organized by the Indian Embassy, attended numerous balls, learnt how to ride a horse and taken numerous dancing lessons in many different styles. My colleagues are more adventurous than I, they run in marathons, compete in triathlons, mountain bike, dive, play golf, and the list goes on.

To find out if you will be able to continue your hobbies in different countries you can search on the internet or check out the ‘activities’ section of the relevant Lonely Planet Guide.

Making Friends

At home you probably have many friends outside of work, this can be difficult to achieve when working at an international school, especially if you frequently move around to different schools.

One key ingredient to making friends with local people can be how much effort you are willing to put into overcoming the language barrier. Learning the local language will also help smooth your life in your host country.

To avoid this issue you can choose to work at an international school in a country where the majority of the population speaks English! In many countries in Western Europe, for example, a large proportion of the population speaks English fluently, so the language barrier is practically nonexistent.

To make friends who are expatriates but not teachers you can join groups like the Hash House Harriers (who organize group runs) and national groups like the New Zealand Society.

Domestic Help

Teachers with children that are looking to teach in a country with a lower cost of living than at home will discover that the lower cost of living also carries across into the cost of child care too, particularly in-home child care.

When you teach abroad you can choose to live and work in a country where you will be able to afford a nanny. Many international teachers with children employ nannies, especially in South East Asia where the cost of living is very low, and as a consequence, local salaries are low too.

Even teachers without children can enjoy the benefits of domestic help in countries where domestic helpers are relatively cheap to employ. Nearly all of my colleagues have maids or cleaners who come in and take care of everything from cleaning the apartment to doing the food shopping and collecting dry cleaning.

Finally

There are many different factors to consider when you are deciding where the best place to teach overseas is for you. But the main thing to keep in mind is that while you may have a wish list of where you want to go and what you want to be able to do once you get there - it may not work out the way you planned.

For example, there may be no teaching vacancies in your specialty in the country of your choice in the year in which you are applying. Or, there may be schools very interested in employing you but not in the region you were hoping for.

The key to being happy and fulfilled when you are teaching abroad is flexibility and a commitment to making it work for you. It is not going to be just like home, you will face challenges, and that is the best part of teaching overseas, no matter where you decide to go!

Untill the fomation of the Republic of China in 1911, Beijing was the seat of Ming and Quing dynasties. It holds several places of historical importance ans government institutions. Famous for its uniformity and standard construction, Beijing has only one hill in the city limits. Beijing has concentric rectangular ring roads which run around the metropolis.

There are many tourist places which attracts lot of people around the world. The Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, Hutongs, Beijing Zoo, Beijing Botanical Gardens, Beihai Park, Yonghegong, Fragrant Hills, Hutongs and Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution are some of the major places of attaction in Beijing.

Also known as the Palace Museum, Forbidden City is really the spot to value the strength and splendor of the Imperial Chinese court during the height of its power in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Built by Mao, Tiananmen Square is the largest square in the world. The square is surrounded by Soviet-style monuments and government buildings. It still remains as an amazing place and a place to stay behind and see visitors from all over the world.

Temple of Heaven, situated to the south-east of Qianmen and the Tiananmen Square, is a marvelous sight for tourists. The temple was the place where the king prayed every year for superior harvests and good weather. Summer Palace houses widespread gardens and the ruins of palaces constructed by the Qing emperors in the ancient era. Beijing Zoo has an aquarium which is one of the biggest in the world, and extremely remarkable.

Beihai Park consists of big island and white pagoda which was built in the 17th century. Also known as Lama Temple or Palace of Peace, Yonghegong was built by Chinese emperors in the ancient time. Many Tibetan and Mongolian monks lived and taught here over the years. The temple houses an 18m statue of Maitreya Buddha carved from a single piece of sandalwood. Situated to the east of Tiananmen Square, Legation Quarter was famous for Boxer Rebellion. Now it is occupied by government offices and army offices.

Once you've arrived, you will know that heaven on earth is real. The most romantic, tropical paradise in the world is waiting for you.Imagine that you and your soulmate are walking along the golden beach at dusk. You relax for a moment, listening to the orchestra of the whispering sea, drink a cool mai tai on the sandy beach, and the echoes of reverberate in your head.

Honeymoon in Thailand

Thailand If you want something that is more of an adventure then consider Thailand. Again, you get beautiful beaches, but with an exotic flair. Thailand is very affordable with budget friendly resorts and spectacular deals on airfare. There is no where quite like Thailand in January and the resort makes the perfect destination for a honeymoon holiday. The beaches of Phuket with their fine golden sand are the perfect place to get away from everything and the resort has plenty of attractions for you and your new husband to visit. One of the most romantic excursions that you can partake in is a romantic elephant trek through the Thai jungle, where you can watch the locals tapping the sap from the giant rubber trees. The Phang Nga Jungle Trek is one of the countries' best places to do this, and whilst here you can meet the friendly baby elephants in their daily show, which includes dancing and harmonica playing. No luxury honeymoon in Thailand would be complete without a traditional Thai massage and although these are available from a plethora of people on Karon Beach, indulge in a massage at your luxury hotel. The Evason Phuket Resort and Spa is well renowned for its treatments.

Thailand. This was a big part of our honeymoon in Southeast Asia. It is one of the most beautiful countries, with high mountain passes in the north, and breathtaking beaches in the south. If you, like many newlyweds, are running on a shoestring budget, Thailand offers more value than most; in fact, budget conscious couples can live on thirty to forty dollars a day if they travel slowly. My wife and I arrived in Bangkok, and journeyed south to Koh Samui for the diving. After three weeks of snorkeling, diving, and watching some truly incredible sunsets, we headed north to Chiang Mai, then off to spend the next ten days trekking in the mountains. The budget for your honeymoon should the first thing that you should set. A wedding is never a cheap affair. Couples end up spending quite a bit on it. Therefore, they need to set a budget to ensure that they have the perfect start to their married life. If you are on a tight budget, you will have to choose your honeymoon destination with care.

Once you have the budget set, it is time to sit down and list all the possible destinations that you would like to spend your honeymoon in. Of course, it is imperative that you are realistic about your destination choices as they should be within your reach. After that, it is time to sit down and figure out what are the activities you would like to undertake during the honeymoon. You may want to experience history, so Peru could be a good choice for this. If you to experience culture, then Japan is perfect. If you want something romantic and relaxing, then think about spending your honeymoon in Thailand or Bali. You can relax on the beautiful beaches all day long!

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and is a good tourist destination, it is quite different from east and north based cities. Bangkok is world famous for providing the variety from museum to nightlife to the visitors. It can be very painful while trying to get around Bangkok. Kra Isthmus is famous for their some of the most filmed beaches in the world. Phuket trip is one of the smaller and less commercialized trips with most famous resort island. For younger travelers Ko Pha Ngan is famous for its regular moon festivals on the sparkling shores.

Travel to Thailand is very easy going and welcoming experience. Everything is available from simple to luxurious at fair price. There is unbeatable combination of hi-tech, rein forested, beaches and metropolitan city. Weather of Thailand is always sunny and the average temperature is around 25-30 degree Celsius. For more comfortable vacation to Thailand, you must keep travel guide with you for all the tourist information, travel agencies and travel destinations for your budget travel.
