Boat trips In Thailand

Apart from the recently well-publicized new Sunday Excursion service from Bangkok to Samut Prakarn and Muang Boran operated by Chao Phraya express company, there are now a glut of boat trips throughout the Kingdom to suit all tastes.

Nearer to home the popular Sunday excursions to Bang Pa In as well as the daily Ayutthaya trips with Pearl of Siam, River Sun Oriental Queen, are complemented by the overnight Manohra and Mekhala rice barge trips. The latter now operates three boats giving a wider choice and daily departures from the Montien Hotel or Ayutthaya. The Bang Pa In - Ayutthaya sector is actually achieved by longtail as the barges turn around at the Summer Palace dock. The all-in overnight trips cost around 6500 baht and include candlelit dinner and other meals with the overnight stop taken at Wat Kai Tia. Tours of Bang Pa In and Ayutthaya are included. There are two 6 cabin barges and one 9 cabin barge, all converted with modern cabin facilities without losing the antique feel of the craft. A leisurely trip along the river can work wonders for the Bangkok stress factor.

Two similar period boats operating out of Phuket are the June Bathra and the Suwan Macaha. The latter is an oriental junk, meticulously restored with 5 luxury cabins. Its 4 day/ 3 night itinerary from Phuket to Phi Phi has stop-offs in Phang Na and Krabi. With full onboard service and sports facilities including sea kayaks, fishing and snorkel gear, the liveaboard routine is a fine way to spend bht 12,000 per head in low season (May through October) Expect to pay up to 30% more in high season. With all meals included that's little more than 3 nights in a good hotel and there are all the added scenic extras of Phang na bay.

June Bathra offers a one day version of the Suwan Matra excursion with daily schooner trips to Phangna and especially the sea gypsy villages and grottos of the northern bay. With plenty of time for swimming and sunbathing after lunch the full day lasts from 0730 to 1800 at a rate of 2200-2500, depending on season.

There are 3 June Bahtra schooners and with a pirate-like feel to the vessels they are big enough for travellers not be overawed by the high season capacity of between 20 and 40 passengers.

Turning to more river based excursions, rather than open water, the up and coming Mekong tourist trade is headed by two quality boat trips namely the Luangsay trips and the Vat Phou jaunt.

The former offers both one and two night trips from Chiang Khong on the Chiangrai border with Laos downriver to Luang Prabang, the former Laotian capital. The extra night differential simply means staying longer at the Luangsuay Lodge, a purpose-built, 19 room, wooden travellers' lodge on the side of the river near to the village of Pakbeng. The caves at Pak Ou and at Tham Ting are included as stops and including all meals the rates start at around 7000 baht for the one night trip. The boats used on these trips are the perfect slow boats (to China?) with 36 seats, open air vista deck, toilet facilities, allowing passengers a casual appraisal of the upper stretches of the Mekong.

The lower stretches of the Mekong, in the 4000-islands region are served by the meticulously restored Vat Phou river boat.

Unlike the Langsuay cruise, the Vat Phou converted hull barge is basically a floating hotel with 12 air-conditioned state rooms with private bathrooms. Now its 7th year of operation since renovation, it is a similar slow boat experience, with open front deck plus an onboard restaurant combining Laotian and continental menus. The 4 day/ 3 night itinerary includes important Khmer sites such as Champassak, Oun Mong and Vat Phou itself. A road trip to the roaring river falls at Phapeng highlights day 2 of the trip before heading back up river. Both major stops include hill walks offering excellent views of the Mekong flood plain region. This exclusive upmarket product starts in the region of bht 17000 per head in the low season, not including the travel to Ubon Ratchathani and the transfer to Pakse on the Mekong.

We have by no means exhausted the boating possibilities with no mention of River Kwai trips, Kaeng Kracharn overnight excursions and the Lake excursions from Tak, as well as the ever popular Sea Canoe soft adventure itineraries and the newly accessible Mergui archipelago options. However, the aforementioned should be enough to whet the appetite of any committed landlubber.

Rocky Point, Mexico information?

I am taking my girlfriend to Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco), Mexico in a couple of weeks. I've already booked a place to stay (Laos Mar Hotel), but we have never been there so I have a few questions.

We are looking to snorkel, but don't a good place to do it and rent the equipment. Is the sea water clear at Rocky Point?

How much does it cost to jet ski or ATV?

Are there any other recommended activities? We were thinking about one of the sunset cruises.

I was told that you should tip every local you see $1. Is this recommended?

Thanks!

Is there a nice beach we can get to without staying at a resort?

Sandy Beach has all the activities, horse back riding, water jets, bananna boat rides, the cruises are fun Pirate ship is the best. Next time you go I would recommend staying at a resort they are right on the beach and also have pools.
Princesa is my pick for best places to stay and the beach
About the tips I would only tip like you do in the states.
Have fun !

Review Of Hotels

What is the best hotel to stay at while at Lackland AFB?

We will be in Lackland from Sept 26-30 to see our son graduate from Basic Training. We want to be near the base but are getting really discouraged reading hotels reviews - some say they are UNSAFE and DIRTY while some say those exact same hotels are GREAT. Please be as honest as possible and help us figure out where to stay. There will be 3 of us - my husband and myself as well as our 13 year old son staying there. We are coming from Maine and have never been to Texas. We plan to visit the Riverwalk and Seaworld while there.

The La Quinta Inn received 3 stars out of 5 according to Google Maps. There are 37 reviews - many of them were positive. There's also the Holiday Inn.

Thailand Hotels: The New And Hip Classic And Traditional

There is huge selection of hotels in Thailand.  Running the gamut from budget back-packer lodging to 5-star top class resorts, there is accommodation here to suit anyone's tastes. Spas are also very popular in the many hotels and they offer world class service. Exploring the different kinds of hotels available in Thailand is an adventure in itself and there are many tremendous deals and undiscovered ones waiting to be found. Let's get started.

 A Hotel Tour of Thailand

Indigo Pearl has been voted as one of the most romantic hotel getaways in Thailand. It is located on Phuket Island's north-west coast of Nai Yang Beach. The special secluded atmosphere offers "pearl shell", perfect for a romantic holiday or honeymoon vacation. Another secluded hotel is the Sila Evason Hideaway on Koh Samui Island. It is ensconced on the northern part of Ban Plailaem Beach, hidden in indigenous flora and vegetation. Amari Trang Beach resort and Spa offers an atmosphere of Thailand's laid-back lifestyle of by-gone years. Le Meridien Khao Lak Beach & Spa Resort is another secret in Phang Nga. Travelers can explore around the islands there including James Bond Island, which got its name from being in the 1974 James Bond film. Paradise Koh Yao Boutique Resort & Spa is a peaceful place around the Phang Nga area as well, which a beautiful place for travelers who would like a more private vacation. Back in Phuket, Andaman White Beach Resort Phuket might be the most famous unknown hotel. This is where Leonardo DiCaprio's movie "The Beach" was filmed. One of the most chic and obscure.

In the north of Thailand, Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi Hotel Chiang Mai offers exquisite service and one of the best spas in the world. More unusual experiences include the magical Anantara Golden Triangle Resort and Spa in Chiang Saen, which overlooks the Mekong river and hills of Myanmar and Laos. This hotel is part of Anantara Elephant Camp which rescues elephants from abusive lives around Thailand. Lampang River Lodge is another unspoiled and pristine experience where travelers can stay in bungalows on the Wang River. There are also many opportunities for travelers to explore the various hill tribe cultures in this area of Thailand.

Back in the big city, Bangkok offers the hottest new chic abodes. The Luxx is a new urban trendy boutique hotel in Silom for young hip travelers. The VIE is the newest in ‘design' hotels which offers sleek amenities and facilities for the city dweller. The Eugenia is a special inn that offers a classic setting of Thailand in the colonial era. There are a limited number of suites, so book ahead of time here. The usual big boys like Conrad, Grand Hyatt Erawan, Four Seasons, and The Sukothai are always some of the top picks in Bangkok as well.  What separate them from each other are the special accommodations they offer.  Visit the Conrad and find out about their Hilton honors program. Also, at your visit to the Four Seasons, make sure to learn about their executive club which offers 24 hours service for a nominal fee provided for your comfort.  On the outskirts of the city on the river Chao Phraya, the Marriot Royal Garden Riverside Hotel is one of the only resort hotels in Bangkok. It has a beautiful interior design and has regular Thai traditional performances. High season in Thailand is in the winter months (November to March), so book a room beforehand during these months.

Traveling Southeast Asia

Traveling in Southeast Asia during the Rainy Season: You're in for some Pleasant Surprises

Are you planning your holiday vacation in the tropics sometime in the near future? Summer is upon us and it'd be crazy not to enjoy some time under the sun. Southeast Asia is no exception. Perhaps for one problem…the rainy season. Or is it a problem at all? If you plan your travels in advance, realize a few things about the season (July – November) and come with the right frame of mind and attitude, Southeast Asia in the rainy season can actually be a great time to visit.

One heed of warning. Southeast Asia can get very hot! This is true pretty much all year round, except perhaps during the rainy season. Yes, temperatures can rise as high as 35 or even 40 degrees on occasion, but the clouds and rains can easily drop the temperatures down, to as low as five degrees below normal or even into the 20's! That is considered cool for Southeast Asia.

The thing about the rainy season is that when it does rain, it will pour heavily, but only for half an hour or at most, an hour. The pattern is usually this, a bright sunny and warm morning, followed by some heavy mid-afternoon clouds, then some afternoon rains and a nice breezy, cloudy and cooler late afternoon/evening. Sometimes night rain occurs, which can also cool the next morning down. So, rain most likely will not disrupt travel plans. In fact, it might actually be a cool relief.

The rainy season also comes with some interesting twists. The green rice fields and forests are much greener than the rest of the year. Even waterfalls are at its best. This is the perfect time to bring out those cameras for some glowing shots of the region's landscapes. This is greenery at its best.

Sometimes you need a rest. And there isn't anything like relaxing in your hotel or resort bedroom, at the lobby or in a local restaurant or bar while it's raining. It is the perfect time to reflect on your trip so far, chat with the people around you or just admire the wet scenery outside.

Price wise, this is also the cheapest time to visit the region. This is, after all, the low season, meaning hotels and just about everything else sees a dip in price. And on top of that, there aren't swarms of tourists, meaning you'll enjoy your time in comfortable surroundings.

Southeast Asia. Try it during the rainy season. You'll be in for a surprise or two.

I think most agents in the Khao San Rd. area specialize in visas for neighboring countries, you can always ask about other coiuntries though .Why spend the extra money to have someone do it for you unless for some reason you don't have the time? It's easy enough to get the visas on your own by going to each embassy and applying.
Russia. China and Mongolia all have embassies in Bangkok. Keep in mind that it may take 3 or 4 business days at each embassy unless you pay extra for the expedited overnight or same day (if offered) visa services.
You don't say where you're from, but US citizens do not require visas to Mongolia, they do for China and Russia. Also, be sure to make some copies of the information and entry stamp pages of your passport, in case you need to show a passport while one of the embassies has your passport.

Holidays Laos

Where in the world should I visit for 3 weeks?

Ok basically during my gap year (last year) I spent all of my time in Europe and the USA, I took in all there is to see in Europe as well as going snowboarding in the Alps, and did alot of the states including the Hawaiian islands for 4 weeks. Having gone to uni and heard alot about peoples trips to SE Asia I felt that I may have missed out on something incredible. Im looking to go on holiday for a good three weeks in september before I go back to Uni, and am considering mainly asia (vietnam, thailand, malaysia, laos, cambodia, india etc) and South America (brazil, argentina, bolivia, chile, mexico etc). I have already visited australia before and have seen a lot of the Caribbean as well as seeing north africa. Any suggestions of what I should do, where i should go and for how long would be appreciated!

If I were you I would go to Bodrum. It has lovely, long and clean beaches, sun, clear sea, surf, rafting and other water sport opportunities, scenic beauties, great night life, a lot of historical places, traditional bath, traditional food, traditional music, traditional dance etc and it’s cheaper than the holiday resorts of other European countries.

You may watch videos and find useful info about Bodrum at http://magnificentturkey.weebly.com/bodrum.html

Champasak Lao

champasak lao="champasak lao"

History of French Indo-China

For over two-thousand years the people of Vietnam have fought off invading armies from ancient Chinese rulers to present-day super powers all the while struggling to maintain their indigenous identity and culture.

One such super power was France. And from 17th century with the establishment of Jesuit missions to 1954 and the battle of Dien Bien Phu the French had influence on Indochina.

French Indochina was formed in October 1887 from the territories of Annam, Tonkin, Cochinchina, which all together form modern-day Vietnam, and the Kingdom of Cambodia- Laos was added after the Franco-Siamese War.

European involvement in Viet Nam was confined to trade during the 18th century, though in 1787 Pigneau de Béhaine, a French Catholic priest, petitioned the French government and organized French military volunteers to aid Nguy?n Ánh in retakinglands lost to the Tây S?n. His troops fought in the service of France until 1802.

France was heavily involved in Vietnam in the 19th century; protecting the work of the Paris Foreign Missions Society in the country was often presented as a justification. As time went on the Nguy?n Dynasty increasingly saw Catholic missionaries as a threat to their way of life.

Territorial conflict in the Indochinese peninsula led to the Franco-Siamese War of 1893. In 1893 the French authorities in Indochina used border disputes, followed by the Paknam naval incident, to provoke a crisis. Soon after, French gunboats appeared at Bangkok, and demanded the cession of Lao territories east of the Mekong and got it.

The French continued to pressure Siam and in 1906–1907 they manufactured another crisis. This time Siam had to concede French control of territory on the west bank of the Mekong opposite Luang Prabang and around Champasak in southern Laos, as well as western Cambodia. France also occupied the western part of Chantaburi.

Pakse

pakse_2="pakse"
Recently Srilankan combined armed forces operation against LTTE, why the president Mr. Pakse left for Jordon ?

Mr. Pakse left the country to Jordon for longer duration of stay. He was flown out of Srilanka only to safeguard his life and family ! Plz. eloborate and confirm whether LTTE supremo Prabhakaran still alive ! Srilankan army boasts about their victory by spreading rumors ? Plz. be crystal clear and express impartially.....

Mr. Rajapaksha left for Jordan to attend an international summit. He left Sri Lanka just before SLA started their final assault. And he returned to Sri Lanka as soon as he heard about the final victory (killing and capturing LTTE leaders and liberating all LTTE held territories).

There are many many stories about the fate of Prabhakaran. I think the most possible version is that he and the top leadership gave themselves up to the SLA(no cyanide capsule), and they killed him with two axe blows to the head (recent photographs clearly shows it).

It is every Saturday morning when hundreds of ethnic peoples mainly Flower H'mong gather to sell their farming products and buy necessities. The market's most colorful part is clothes section with shirts, blouses, skirts…or parts of the traditional costumes with embroidery patterns in different motifs lying on dark batik background but may be the most interesting section is the tobacco and wine section when buyers are allowed to taste the product before buying and many men get too drunk to buy anything more!
In the perfect light of the early morning, It is not only the colorful market and the peoples but also the beautiful surrounding nature make the visit here an unforgettable trip, especially for nature lovers and photo hunters.
