Laos Voyage

laos voyage_2="laos voyage"

The Central cost of Vietnam

With 3,260km-long coastline, Vietnam has numerous pristine plages, of which those in the Centre are highly recommended for their amazingly crystal water, rich of sunlight, less of rivermouths, and flat shore dotted by fishing villages; few of them have been developed as comfortable resorts like China Beach, Nha Trang or Phan Thiet. Yet, should you turn West, you will meet an absolute different topography near the Lao border – the fertile plateaus cultivated for industry trees plantation and cattle farming. It's Tay Nguyen – "the Plateau in the West". There are also lots of minority groups inhabit this area with those customs and conducts that are very unlike their brothers in Northern Vietnam. Their festive days and exciting daily life, the highland scenery and the sea and mountain resorts – all make a voyage to the Centre of Vietnam so diversified and memorable.

Further south - Phan Thiet

Phan Thiet is an old Cham outpost with a population of 75,000 people. Its renown for its large fishing fleet and is famous for "nuoc mam", or fish sauce, the traditional and most popular dipping sauce in Vietnam. The particular smell of fish and fish sauce permeates the downtown area as Phan Thiet river cuts right through the centre of the town. It is also packed with boats. The fishing village at Mui Ne is very picturesque with its hundreds of multicolored boats.

There is also a beach a few km to the east of the town. But the bigger draw is Mui Ne Beach, 22km again to the east of the town. The road to Mui Ne is stunning with sand dunes on the one side and a relatively unspoiled beach on the other. Beautiful, majestic coconut trees are in abundance on both sides of the road.

Phan Rang and Thap Cham
Phan Rang is actually composed of twin towns; Phan Rang and Thap Cham. It is a small town on the coast with its main attraction being Cham historical remnants and towers in the surrounding area. The Cham Empire thrived in and around Phan Rang from around the 8th century its fall in the 17th century. The Phan Rang region is very dry, as it manages to avoid the summer and winter monsoons. It averages only 60cm of rain per year. The immediate area around Phan Rang is very beautiful and is interspersed with grape gardens and is the home of the best dragon fruit in Vietnam.

Pklong Garai Cham Tower
The main attraction in Phan Rang is a small group of Cham towers which sit by the roadside 7 km on the road to Dalat. These towers were built in the early 14th century as Hindu temples during the Cham Empire. They have been beautifully preserved. The towers were named after the King who invented a system of irrigation used in local villages. As the tourist buses from Nha Trang to Dalat pass through Phan Rang, the Cham towers are seen as a convenient place to take a break along the way. The result of which is that the towers are periodically swarmed by travelers heading north and south. In the center of the largest temple is an ancient linga (phallic symbol) with a human face painted on it. The other towers still retain their beautiful shapes and the carved details are clearly visible.

My Lai
One of the vestiges of the war is the village of My Lai. It is situated 15 km North of Quang Ngai. The destruction of the entire village by Lieutenant Calley's men is probably the best documented military atrocity on record. The massacre occurred on 16 April 1968. On that day, 504 women, old men, children and babies were mindlessly slaughtered by Company C with almost no resistance. There is a museum with photos depicting the series of events on this horrific day. The atrocities took place at different sites within a two or three square kilometers area. Walking among the fields, you occasionally come across a memorial plaque indicating the number of people that died on that particular spot. Lieutenant Calley was later court-martialed in the US and sentenced to life in prison. However he only served three years in jail. After the US Supreme Court refused to hear his case, Calley was paroled.

Hill tribe villages
If you time it is very worthwhile to take an excursion to visit the hill tribes. To get to the villages, follow the road heading to Dalat and the Cham Towers. Before reaching the Cham Towers there is a gas station situated on the right hand side. Turn right onto the dirt road just before the gas station. This private road leads to different villages where you will be able to see the different hill tribes. Noteworthy, while there, is a visit to view their irrigation system. You will find it quite interesting.

Orient Express Train - More Than Just One Train

The Orient Express Train, Venice-Simplon Orient Express, Eastern and Oriental Express, the Hiram Bingham Train, British Pullman, Northern Belle, Royal Scotsman. You will have no doubt heard mention of all these trains at some point in relation to the Orient Express group of trains. So let's examine them briefly and try to remove some of the confusion!

The "Real" Orient Express Train

No longer exists! This may come as a surprise to you but it's true. The real Orient Express Train, the true descendant of the original 1883 Orient Express, took its last journey at the end of 2009 after over 125 years service!

All the following are privately owned and operated by Venice Simplon Orient Express (VSOE) Limited. They are all made up of beautifully restored train coaches originating from the 1920s, 30s & 50s. Under that banner the following trains operate:

Venice-Simplon Orient Express (VSOE)

You can take the VSOE from London (with the UK part of the trip on The British Pullman - see below) to Paris and Venice approximately once a week from March to November. Less often it travels to Rome, Krakow, Budapest, Prague and Istanbul. The European part of the train is made up of 1920s sleeping-cars.

British Pullman

A day time Pullman Train that travels from London to Folkestone as well as providing day trips and luxurious lunches primarily across the Southern part of the United Kingdom. As well as visiting places such as Hever Castle and Wisley Gardens you can enjoy a sumptuous lunch on board departing from Exeter, Plymouth and Bournemouth. In addition they run special events such as The Golden Age as Steam Day.

Northern Belle

The sister train of the British Pullman, The Northern Belle offers day excursions and short breaks throughout Britain from major stations throughout the South, West, Midlands, North of England, Scotland and Wales. Enjoy immaculate carriages, superb food, service and scenery to take your breath away. Visiting locations as diverse as Glamis Castle, Portmeirion, The Lake District, Hampton Court, Edinburgh, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs to name just a few, as well as trips to special events like the Chelsea Flower Show, Ladies Day at Royal Ascot and Wimbledon.

The Royal Scotsman

Taking just 36 guests, in private cabins, a journey on The Royal Scotsman is regarded as one of the world's great rail journeys. There are luxurious trips available from the 2 night Highlands short break right up to a 7 night Grand Tour of Britain all departing from Edinburgh.

Eastern and Oriental Express

A sister train to Europe's Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, winding through some of the world's most beautiful and exotic landscapes, it voyages through Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, and on into Laos. As well as the classic journey from Singapore to Bangkok (or vice versa), you can take an epic 7 day tour of Thailand or Malaysia.

Machu Pichu on the Hiram Bingham Train

Once only accessible on foot, today there is a truly relaxing way to reach Machu Picchu from Cuzco: aboard the Hiram Bingham train. It is named after the explorer who discovered the extraordinary remains of the Inca citadel, Machu Picchu in 1911. The carriages carry a distinctive blue and gold exterior and the interiors are luxurious and inviting with elegant decoration in the style of the 1920's Pullman trains.

Hope this has cleared up any confusion!

How to follow the tea road?

Tea is a drink of everyday, shared by billions of people, often prepared in a rudimentary way and yet, far from being ordinary, it offers a magical dimension! Why?

It is because, contrary to the other drinks, tea never tastes the same, either the same flavour, or the same strength. Different types of teas are found in immensely diversifying flavours, tastes, colours and benefits.

Of all the countries I visited, I discovered a thousand ways to drink tea. Through the rituals practiced by people, I realized that preparing and pouring a tea was a relationship to others and nature, the same relationships as those that matter in our lives. This made the voyage even more enticing, to learn and experience tea rituals of the lands producing it.

To share my experience of all those feelings and finding magical moments, here are some of my various travels, including China, Japan, India, Laos, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Burkina-Faso and Argentina. Not only have I explored teas in these regions but also learnt about plants and flowers that made mixtures, coming from the four corners of the world. This in particular helped the creative tea fanatic inside me to bring out his creativity in designing unique tea mixtures that leave a splendid impact on the drinker.

On the road of organic tea producers, the goal remains the same: to promote the organic sector by providing direct and fair compensation for producers, improving incomes, enhancing living conditions, granting social rights and ensuring environmental goodness.

Here is a study of some regions:

ASIA:

China: Region of Yunnan - There is an excellent cooperative, organic certified in 2004 and FLO in 2007, the cooperative has 250 families of small producers belonging to the Lahu ethnic group.

Favourite Teas: Pu-erh, Mini Tuocha, Yunnan Dianhong.

China: Hubei region - Another cooperative, organic certified in 2001 and FLO in 2007, has 500 families of small producers belonging to ethnic Tujia and Miao.

Favourite Teas: Chun Mee, Gunpowder, Sencha, Jade Cloud, Wulu Premium Kung Fu Congou, Lapsang Souchong.

Laos: Tray of Bolovènes – organic certified in 2007 and FLO in 2009, the cooperative of my choice has saved the hand-made production scale of 100 families of farmers cultivating traditional tea of high quality.

Favourite Teas: Green, Black Paksong, Celestial Oolong, Mekong.

LATIN AMERICA

Argentina: Guiray (Misiones Province) - I visited a small cooperative, which includes 20 producers of mate. I have partners who have worked for 5 years in creating this production of organic material in the region of San Vicente.

Plant chosen: Maté

AFRICA

Burkina Faso - I started a development project in 2009 for 2 plants (hibiscus and neem) in Burkina-Faso with the help of Africa Orange Blue. This project will support the work of rural women and maintain the culture of ancient plants.

Plants: Hibiscus, Neem.

The road to tea producers has been overwhelming in all ways. Direct association with the cooperatives and studying tea with small farmers led La Route Des Comptoirs to where it stands today.
