The Allure of Aluna, Princess of Lao Pop Music

Lao musical artists' commitment to their craft dates back thousands of years. One folk tale captures the spirit of devotion with which the best musicians have experimented, creating many unique traditions and styles. According to that legend, a traditional Lao instrument called the khene was invented by a woman trying to imitate the sound of the garawek bird she had heard while on a walk one day.

Upon reaching her village she began experimenting with many different designs for her instrument, using plucked and bowed strings and various types of other materials before finally settling on a type of bamboo flute. The woman brought the new instrument before the king, who, after hearing her play, curtly responded that it was ‘fair.' Modifying the instrument, she played once more and again asked the king if he was pleased. "Tia nee kaen dae," he said, which means "this time it was better."

The same persistent approach to finding the right kind of sound can be heard today in the mesmerising music of Aluna, the princess of pop in Laos.

Creative Drive

Aluna Thavonsouk is a Lao pop singer whose contemporary musical style draws upon older techniques and often includes traditional Lao instruments. In what she calls her ‘new sound,' she may even begin including the khene.

"I started with normal pop songs. You learn as you go and I have changed my perspectives in writing songs as well as the way of making music and melodies," Aluna said of her creative process. "The contemporary ideas came to my soul and I mix the traditional sounds into my music a lot these days, but I am not yet satisfied with the result. I am still looking for the new sound. It might take a year or forever… I don't know, but it is exciting to me."

Aluna's humble attitude – she is also the general manager of her family's hotel business in Vang Vieng – is uncommon for a musician of her stature, but her tirelessness has paid off ever since she began creating music back in 2002. To date, she has performed in U.S. cities like Chicago, Seattle and Los Angeles, and she has toured in Japan, China, Malaysia and throughout Southeast Asia. Her self-titled albums "Aluna" (2005) and "Aluna Part II" (2008) produced many number-one singles on regional radio charts and her hit "Khaum HouSuek Bork" earned her the award for Best Pop Song at the first annual Lao Music Awards in July 2008. Even The Today Show recognised this 29-year-old artist as one of the preeminent talents of Laos' burgeoning pop music scene.

New Sounds

Laos' contemporary music culture has emerged from a long history of political unrest and a complex mix of cultural influences. Although romantic songs and ballads have always been popular in Laos, Western music was first introduced in the 1920s during the French colonial period, impacting a new generation of Lao singers and composers. Then, following the country's lengthy civil war and the 1975 Communist takeover, patriotic songs and anthems dominated the charts.

Since 2000, though, when the government began to relax the country's music regulations, Lao record companies have been eager to promote singers who appeal to younger audiences. Today, pop music is booming and local Lao artists are heard on the radio alongside other foreign singers from the U.S. and Thailand.

Aluna is at the forefront of the homegrown talents now changing the Lao music scene. Her songs incorporate the loop of Morlum and other traditional Lao music – especially the catchy fast tracks – and often include unique beats and traditional instruments. Her lyrics focus on themes of love, but she also delves into topics like the environment, social classes and many other touchy subjects.

The artist is currently learning the khene (a bamboo mouth organ with many keys) and the traditional Lao flute, not to mention practicing the Lao Opera singing style, which requires a great deal of energy and the ability to play with how one projects one's voice.

Deep Roots

While Aluna's contemporary style has many musical influences, the traditional music of Laos plays an important part in creating that sound: "We, the new generation, never forgot the roots of our music," she explained.

Born and raised in Laos, Aluna was surrounded by music from a very early age and always loved to sing. "People often ask who my music idols are and I respond, ‘They are my mom and dad.' In fact, they are the first people who opened up my world to music. During my childhood, I'd often hear my dad singing with his guitar; my mom would sing along in her free time. They loved playing songs created by legends of the 60s and 70s like Elvis, Cliff Richards, The Beatles and The Carpenters, among many others. Those early experiences were so cool. Every now and then, I carry some of those old songs with me and sing along. Some people are surprised by my knowledge of old songs."

When Aluna was young, there were always instruments around the house on which she could practice. (Her father was a musician.) At just five years old, she picked up her first instrument – a guitar.

"At that age, it was much bigger than my body and too big for me to hold, so I held it on my lap and played. I was always curious about how musical instruments produce sounds and how those sounds turn into different keys and notes. The guitar, keyboard and the harmonica were my favourites. With my mind's empty canvas, I tried to differentiate the sounds, keys and notes using only my senses." She did not study music, however, and never had professional training because it was too expensive.

"My childhood experience with music was so wonderful and peaceful that I knew I'd always want to be around it. Though I had been surrounded by music from a young age, I never thought of becoming a professional singer – that dream never existed."

Life Changes

Meanwhile, Aluna excelled in her studies and received a scholarship to study abroad at a university in Australia. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in business and returned to Laos to work at Thavonsouk Resort, her family's business in Vang Vieng. Still, something was missing and she longed for the next adventure in her life. So, during the tourism low season, she took three months off from her job to travel to Europe. "That trip changed my life," the singer reported matter-of-factly.

Arriving in Paris in the early morning of June 21, 2002, Aluna noticed that a festival was in progress. "I heard music along the road, and I saw people spontaneously come out and play music. They sang about everything using their guitars, saxophones, trumpets, harmonicas and accordions. They were everywhere – on roadsides, in the Metro and on almost every corner I walked past. I was so happy to be in this amazing environment. I felt like I was brought back to something familiar, but also something that I was missing for some time. It was great to hear music again."

That event was France's Fête de La Musique (Music Festival), which offered Aluna the chance to see shows by musicians such as Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, R.E.M., Bryan Adams and many other legendary artists.

"It was so inspiring!" the singer recalled. "I was about to celebrate my birthday a few days later and I truly felt that witnessing this event was one of the most precious gifts ever… I tuned in and silently listened, and in that moment, I felt like a bolt of lightening struck me. It was in that moment that my dream was born. I said to myself, ‘Yes, why don't I create music? Why don't I sing?!' "

Since then, Aluna has moved from strength to strength and encouraged others to follow their hearts. "There are many ways to realise your dreams and true passions," she revealed. "Free your mind and look deep down into your heart, because sometimes ideas don't come right away. Part of the journey is to develop and grow by following your passion."

Where and which are the nearest hotels to Mae Lao district of Chiangrai, Thailand?

Mae Lao District is very close (10 miles) to the city of Chiang Rai. In the city, you have a wonderful choice of accommodation from top of the range hotels from 100 USD per night to clean basic backpackers at 6 USD per night.

Is it really important for you to stay in Mae Lao where the choice and quality of accommodation is much lower?

Great Hotels Deals

great hotels deals_2="great hotels deals"
Have you used one of those travel sites that has great deals on hotels...?

You know the ones who only tell you the name of the place once you have actually booked the hotel? What site did you use, and was your experience bad or good? Thanks!

I've had good luck with both Priceline and Hotwire but there are things to be cautious of. Do you have a car? If you are flying into a city and counting on public transit then you are taking a risk. When I used Hotwire to book a hotel room in Milwaukee I lucked out - it had a free airport shuttle AND was directly on a city bus line but if it hadn't had those, taxi costs would have negated my savings. Using Hotwire I got great deals in Milwaukee and Duluth, a good deal in Welland and barely any savings in Winnipeg. The Winnipeg hotel I had was really, really nice and in a central location however the price I paid through Hotwire was only about $10 less than that listed on the hotel's own website plus it had a parking fee of $9 per night. Had I booked something on my own I would have made sure it didn't have any additional fees for internet or parking but I would have ended up in a more basic hotel. It's always a risk.

I have now booked my first hotel through Priceline using the "name your own price" feature. I placed a bid I thought was too low but was surprised when it was accepted! It turns out I have a room at a Comfort Inn in a good location for 40% less than the very best "pay-in-advance" rate on the website. I haven't actually stayed there yet but hopefully it goes off without a hitch.

I think it's worth the chance if you have your own car or a rental for transportation and so far don't have any negative stories.

Good luck.

Lonely Planet Laos

Must see/do's in Laos?

Hi Guys,
I'm planning a big trip to SE Asia starting in Thailand in January and have ideas for Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam but not sure what I should do in Laos? I'll be there in February probably, might be a bit chilly for tubing etc. I have a lonely planet but would really like to hear some personal recommendations from people who've spent time there as to favourite towns, places etc.

Thanking you very much in advance, xx

Hi
I was in Laos in June for a couple of days. I visited Luang Prabang and around.
Luang Prabang is just a small incredibly clean quiet town consisting of colonial villas and Buddhist monasteries, most of them are small, the oldest one is 16th century's Wat Xieng Tong.
For a breathtaking view you may want to climb the Phousi hill in the centre of the town. There is a stupa on top, a monastery (again) and a 'Buddha's footprint' in a cave.
I also visited the Royal Ballet, but it was quite standard for SEA.
My best impressions: I have taken an elephant ride in the elephant village 15 km from
Luang Prabang. Riding on the neck of this gentle giant through the rain forest is a fantastic sensation. It is possible to interact with the elephants for 1-2-3 days in that village (Mahout courses).
Also I liked VERY much the Kuang Xi waterfalls (40 km from Luang Prabang) - that time of the year the water was clean blue in the white natural basins cascading up to bottom, and people were bathing.

Laos is for nature lovers, trekking, kayaking ets. but all this you can read in the LP. The food is excellent, the accomodation very decent and it looked perfectly safe at least in Luang Prabang.

Unfortunately, it was only 2 days, and I already miss it again. I want more.

Vietnam Laos

Agent Orange: Its affects in the Vietnam War and After

The Vietnam War, or also referred to as The Second Indochina War, started on September 26, 1959 and lasted until April 30, 1975. The war was between the communist North Vietnam and the government of South Vietnam, taking place in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. In 1959, two US military advisors were killed by Viet Minh guerillas in South Vietnam, and were the first American deaths in the Second Indochina War, starting what we know today as the Vietnam War. The US entered this war along with other anti-communist nations supporting the South Vietnam government to help prevent the takeover of South Vietnam. The 16 year cold war killed over 58,000 Americans with over 153,000 wounded, leaving an estimated 1800 still unaccounted for today.

Various war weapons were used in the Vietnam including herbicides. These herbicides were developed for the military to help reduce plant and vegetation in dense terrains, bringing the enemy out of hiding and protecting the American troops and their allies from ambush. They were also used to destroy any food crops that the Viet Cong relied on to feed their army of soldiers. Statistics show that over 20 million gallons were sprayed with 15 different herbicides, some being color coded arriving in barrels, and all supposedly with no harmful effects to humans. The spray was released from airplanes, helicopters, trucks, and soldiers carrying backpack sprayers. Little did anyone know at this time, that more tragic history surrounding the Vietnam war was about to unfold, and the name of the devil was Agent Orange.

Agent Orange was a code name for the barrel with the orange colored steel band. Chemically, it is a 50/50 mixture of two different herbicides, 2, 4-D, and 2, 4, 5-T, and 11 million gallons of this toxic defoliant was used between 1965 through 1970. Over 6,000 missions, with 10% being over Vietnam, were sprayed with Agent Orange, and some in Cambodia and Laos to utilize the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which was a key supply route for the Viet Cong. Agent Orange killed vegetation of all types including the root systems, leaving barren trees and undergrowth blackened and foul smelling.

One of the components of Agent Orange was a chemical called Dioxin, which today is considered to be one of the most dangerous substances in the world. Dioxin is also known as TCDD, which caused a variety of adverse health effects in lab animals, and has been linked to numerous potentially dangerous and deadly health problems. The World Health Organization has since classified the chemical Dioxin as a known human carcinogen which can damage sensitive parts of the body like the endoctrine, immune, and nervous systems.

Many Americans still continue to suffer from different health problems due to Agent Orange and Dioxin with some being passed on down to their children with various complications. In 1978 the Veterans Administration set up a program to help veterans with their needs from being exposed to Agent Orange. Some of the effects from this devastating chemical are as follows:

Skin irritation and some skin diseases like Chloracne
Nerve disorders including peripheral neuropathy
Type 2 diabetes
Miscarriages in women
Birth defects, some physical deformaties and Spina Befida
Neurological disorders
Cancers

Lawsuits have been filed accusing the chemical companies of war crimes because they sold Agent Orange to the military and companies such as Monsanto, Hercules, Dow, and Diamond Shamrock knew about the dangers of the herbicide but did not reveal them. In 1984 a huge class-action lawsuit was settled in the U.S. courts, with seven U.S. companies agreeing to pay a total of 180 million dollars to 291,000 people, with most of them being Vietnam war veterans. The final settlement which included interest was around 240 million dollars. The tragedy surrounding Agent Orange with Dioxin still goes on today.

Cruising The Beautiful Halong Bay And The Exotic Mekong River Delta In Vietnam

Vietnam is a beautiful country and a popular destination for tourists in the South East Asia area. The charms of Vietnam come first and foremost from its marvelous natural beauty and then the friendly people and lifestyle. When visiting Vietnam, there are two places tourists cannot miss in order to experience both Vietnam's nature and lifestyle of locals. Those two places are Halong bay and Mekong river delta.

Halong bay is famous for its nature creations of caves, rock formations and thousands of small islands and islets. Cruising Halong bay is the best way to enjoy all this rugged nature, standing still among the vast blueness of ocean and under the same intense blue sky on a nice summer day. The usual length of a vacation to Halong bay that can ensure tourists the exploration of this wonderful bay is around 3 days.

To make sure a smooth trip, tourists can easily book a Halong cruise from any Hanoi hotel with internet acess. Hope on a bus to Quang Ninh from any bus stations such as Gia Lam, Luong Yen or Nam Thang Long, it takes about 3 hours to get to Halong bay. There, all's left to do is find the previously booked cruise then enjoy the scene. Most tourists stay overnight on their cruises or take a one-day cruise. Except they want to explore other sites around Halong bay, not many people finds the option of booking hotels here necessary.

Mekong Delta in Vietnam is famous for its unique lifestyle as most of the locals living on the river. Most of the cruise tours to this area start from Ho Chi Minh City. The popular stop along these cruises are Can Tho, Cai Be, Vinh Long, My Tho, Sa Dec…The normal length for a Mekong river cruise is from 4-6 days depended on the chosen route. With over a week, tourists can pick the cruises that cross border to Cambodia and Laos. Cruising in Mekong River will be quite an unforgettable experience with the floating life of the locals, the floating markets with many different fresh fruits and the amazing view along the way.

Usually tourists can book a cruise tour in Vietnam via the internet or telephone without any problem. There are many travel agents that offer booking cruises for their customers as well. Another option is for tourists to go directly to the office of their chosen cruise ships and book a tour.

What is the Bestest,Cheapiest,Nicest,Miami Hotel?

Help does anyone know how and/or where to get a great discount on a NICE hotel that is reallllly cheap in price in Miami....I have been to all the hotel discount sites and they are just as expensive......Does Priceline's "make your own bid" thing work???Have you used it before and were there alot of hidden charges such as "resort fees"?

You can try all those discount hotel brokers, like Hotel.com, expedia, ect. They are all similiar. The thing is, if you find what you think is a good price, don't wait around to check it later...JUMP ON IT! Those deals don't stay on there for very long! I got screwed out of $180.00 last year on a Tampa hotel because I wasn't decisive! Also, be sure to read reviews on the place on TripAdvisor.com ( I think thats it name)...It can help you avoid a complete dump!!! Been there, Done that! good luck, and have fun!

Ecotourism In Laos

Top Five Ways to Experience Biodiversity Hotspots

Biodiversity – the variety of life in a particular ecosystem – is a precious thing, inherently. In species-rich environments, the awe-inspiring intricacies of our planet's long bio-evolutionary history can be found in full flower, growl, flutter, slither and bubble. It is truly an amazing thing to behold.

<!-- @font-face { font-family: "Times New Roman"; }@font-face { font-family: "Arial"; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }h2 { margin-right: 0in; margin-left: 0in; font-size: 18pt; font-family: Times; font-weight: bold; }h3 { margin: 12pt 0in 3pt; page-break-after: avoid; font-size: 13pt; font-family: Arial; font-weight: bold; }a:link, span.MsoHyperlink { color: blue; text-decoration: underline; }a:visited, span.MsoHyperlinkFollowed { color: purple; text-decoration: underline; }p { margin-right: 0in; margin-left: 0in; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times; }table.MsoNormalTable { font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } -->

In the world's biodiversity hotspots, the acute priority placed on conservation means that visitors and travellers must handle with care. We encourage travellers to explore these biological treasure troves, but to do so responsibly. Some of the best ways to do this are on guided tours with local tourism professionals committed to conservation principles and making as little impact as possible. These guided tours also deliver high levels of learning, adventure and fun!

The Travel Word (http://www.thetravelword.com/) is pleased to offer our five favourite ways to experience biodiversity hotspots around the globe.

Scuba Diving the Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands enjoy healthy reefs that represent a small part of the Coral Triangle biodiversity hotspot in the southwest Pacific. Divers visiting the town of Gizo on Ghizo Island, which is famous for its submarine seascapes, discover a variety of healthy, warm-water reefs teeming with fish that have not been loved to death. With Dive Gizo, the whl.travel local connection in the Solomon Islands, daily dive tours are limited to eight passengers at each site to ensure there is no great impact on the marine life. The dives, including some wrecks, suit both novices and masters, and promise great photo ops.

Amazon Tree Climbing in Manaus, Brazil

As the largest tropical rainforest system in the world, the Amazon is a place of unparalleled biodiversity. In fact, more than one third of all species in the world live in the Amazon Rainforest. Where is one of the best places to get a sense of this almost preternatural environment? The city of Manaus, is headquarters to a number of rainforest tour activities, from kayaking and river cruises to canopy tours. Now, even Amazon tree-climbing is an option! Outfitted with climbing gear, visitors can hoist themselves up through the branches and up to the jungle canopy the way researchers do to collect data. Even better, with Selenetur Travel, the whl.travel local connection in Manaus, concern for the rainforest is top priority. Tours groups can be no larger than six so no harm befalls the trees. This blissful encounter with nature leaves climbers with a renewed impulse to conserve it!

Waterfall Trekking in Luang Namtha, Laos

Luang Namtha Province lies in the northwest of Laos, sharing borders with both China and Myanmar. Around 85 percent of its 9,325 square kilometres is mountainous and approximately 50 percent is covered by forests, making for landscape with high levels of biodiversity. Home to more than 20 ethnic minority groups, 37 large animal species, 297 bird species and 60 fish species, Luang Namtha has been recognised as having enormous potential for ecotourism.

The 2,230-square-kilometre Nam Ha National Protected Area (NPA) is a primary tourism attraction in Luang Namtha. Lying at the intersection of the Indochina and Himalayan bioregions, the bio-diverse area is a protected area of international significance. A refreshing way to explore the Nam Ha NPA rainforest is a one-day waterfall trek that leaves from the small town of Vieng Phouka, located two hours by car south of Luang Namtha town.

Canoeing the Fifth Season Floods in Estonia

Soomaa National Park, which surrounds the Estonian ‘summer capital' of Pärnu is a naturally quirky place, principally because it protects some of the world's rarest ecosystems – peat bogs and wetlands (the word soomaa means ‘land of bogs'). Estonia is a wet country with almost 25 percent of the territory consisting of different kinds of wetlands, arguably the most important of which are the ancient and disappearing peat bogs.

Another quirk about the Soomaa region is its ‘fifth-season' spring floods. Each year, usually in April, spring melt-off raises water levels by about five metres, submerging everything – forest floors, meadows, fields, roads and even village houses – for two to three weeks during which a boat is just about the only way to get around. This is not a catastrophe but a much-anticipated season and a popular time for canoe trips into the national park, like those organised by Karuskose Ltd, the whl.travel local partner in Pärnu. Some tours navigate the swamped forests – even right up to the doors of houses – using haabjas, or traditional hand-carved dugout canoes made from huge aspen logs.

Hiking Through Primary Rainforests in Sri Lanka

The gorgeous rainforests of Sri Lanka are on the list of the planet's top 10 biodiversity hotspots most at risk of destruction. Sadly, at the top of the list of Sri Lankan rainforests most at risk is Sinharaja (meaning ‘lion king') Forest Reserve, the largest Gondwanan rainforest in South Asia. It is relatively small – barely more than 110 square kilometres – but if taken with contiguous forest reserves, it represents the largest single block (about 475 square kilometres) of wet-zone primary forest in the country. Naturally, it is the green heart of Sri Lanka's unique and enormously important biodiversity, boasting the highest concentration of endemic species in a country fabled for its endemism. The best way to appreciate to call attention to its irreplaceable bounty is simply to visit.

Let the sunshine in - Nha Trang resorts Vietnam

With a beautiful beach, an endless supply of fresh seafood and a string of hopping bars in the evening, you simply can’t go wrong in Nha Trang, says Van Cong Tu

Nha Trang Beach, Vietnam

Nha Trang has long been a popular destination for both local and international tourists. Its long sandy beach lined with coconut palms is the stand-out attraction of this large city located on Vietnam’s south central coast. Entire days can quite easily be whiled away relaxing in the sun, chasing a tan, recovering from a hangover or simply de-stressing. In fact, a beach city like Nha Trang can be a highly therapeutic place.

It is tourist friendly. In Hanoi, the tourist patch is the Old Quarter. In Ho Chi Minh City, it is District 1 and the strip that runs along Pham Ngu Lao. In these areas, many of the local folk can speak English reasonably well. This means information on tourist services, onward journeys and local sights is easy to obtain.

Nha Trang also has its traveller’s zone, where you can book boat trips, rent motorbikes and pick up tickets for planes, trains and automobiles to your next destination. Located along and parallel to a few blocks of beachfront, the place to stay in Nha Trang is in the small district known as Biet Thu. Mini-hotels and guesthouses abound in this area and the beach is never more than a five minute walk away.

More up-market accommodation in high rise hotels is available further up the beach road, if you don’t mind a long walk or a taxi ride at the end of the night. This is worth bearing in mind, because a night or two of your holiday will inevitably be spent in one or more of Nha Trang’s great bars. The jewels in the crown of the bar scene here are the Nha Trang Sailing Club and the Louisiane Brewhouse, two long established watering holes right on the beach.

The former is a stunning complex with restaurants, a bar and a nightclub, where drinks after a hard day on the beach can be followed by a meal and some jiving on the dance floor. For many, it is the last stop of the night. The latter is a beer lover’s paradise, open all day but not so late into the night. Four different beers are brewed on the premises and can be enjoyed on the brew house’s waterfront beach lounges or by the pool.

Away from the beach, you will find a number of popular bars, such as Crazy Kim’s, Guava, Shorty’s and the Why Not Bar, which all have their own unique atmospheres. There are eating options galore in Nha Trang with Indian, Italian, Japanese and other international cuisines well represented. But, by the seaside, the choice is obvious: seafood. Outside restaurants throughout the tourist area, you will find fresh prawns, squid, lobster and fish.

Customers can specify which creature they want to dine on and watch it flipped onto the barbeque. However, you can find better seafood experiences where the locals eat. One such place is Bien Tien Hai San, a restaurant about three kilometres along the main beach road, north of town. In fact, there are many seafood eateries out this way, which are worth a visit.

Other local specialties, available away from the tourist strip in the streets around the main market, include fried rice-flour pancakes (banh xeo), fish noodle soup (bun ca) and fresh roll-your-own spring rolls (nem nuong). Going hungry in Nha Trang is not even remotely possible. Apart from the above-mentioned sedentary activities of sunbathing, drinking and eating, Nha Trang does have a few more active pursuits on offer.

Diving is big here, with a few operators competing for business underwater. All-day-boat trips to the surrounding islands with frequent stops for swimming and snorkelling are also popular with the young backpacking crowd. The Cham Towers across the river are also worth a visit for those hungry for history and architecture.

Despite all of the possibilities, whenever I go back to Nha Trang, I find myself gravitating toward the beach by day, the street food and seafood at meal times and the bars by night. It’s a failsafe routine that I thoroughly recommend.

Laos Map

laos map_3="laos map"
How to know this map is good for tourist?

when we have to travel another country there are many maps about travel in Laos, Vietnam and Thailand but how to know which one is good map for tourist?

Hi!

To know if a map is good for tourists, see it's price tag and brand name.

For Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand, Periplus Maps are the best - they are reasonably priced and have city plans of all the important cities, towns, and even islands. One drawback is that you will have to purchase them individually (US$ 8.99 / PhP 497 each).

Nelles Map of Laos, Cambdia, ad Vietnam is also good but not as detailed as Periplus.

Free maps given at airports and tourist offices in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam) are very unwieldy and hard to use - and most just show roads without buildings. The Bangkok Government issued map was bad - Periplus Bangkok Map is better.

is it possible to rent a car in vientiane laos?

well, theoretically it is, but you should have a local or an ASEAN driving license, even if some tourist guides say otherwise. Another con is that if you are having any trouble with, say, the engine or else, while driving in the countryside, there will be a very few people able to fix the problem.
You should rent a Toyota Vigo pick-up, as it seems to be the only kind of car circulating in Lao.

Cheers!

Online Hotels Booking Delhi

Online Hotels Booking Delhi

If you have ever spent couple of days at a budget hotel, you would probably have a rough idea about the services and amenities, provided by such hotels.  Depending upon the location of that hotel, you must have seen the variations in the level of services. Sometimes, it must have been just ok and at other times, it might have proved too much to bear.  If you have gone through such kind of experience then, it is not your fault. When any industry grows from the state of ‘ignorance and insignificance' to abundance, quality is bound to suffer.  Same thing applies to hospitality industry in India, which is now overflowing with budget hotels, and big chains of hotel and restaurants.  People on vacation in Delhi, can choose any Budget Hotel Delhi, for their stay during vacation.

When selecting a Budget Hotel Delhi, a tourist can consider few things such as location, reputation of hotel, safety arrangements, level of security, efficiency and behavior of Hotel Staffand eating arrangements.  If a hotel is located nearby a strategic location such as railway station, airport, market places, malls etc. then it not only makes that hotel easily accessible but also, give you wonderful opportunities to spend your leisure time and to buy gifts for yourself and your family members.  Reputation of hotel would tell you what can be expected out of its service and safety arrangements such as fire-fighting system, CCTV cameras, strength of security staff would help you focus on the enjoyments rather worries about the security of your family and your belongings.

Behavior of hotel staff is also an important factor as they are the ones who directly interact with customers and responsible for resolving their queries and catering to their requests. If a hotel has got its own eating space then, the chances are you would not spend your vacation lying on bed, which is a probability if you are forced to eat at insanitary food joints, outside the hotel.  Hotel Karat87 is that hotel, which fulfills all these evaluation parameters, and has a spotless reputation in the hospitality industry. With their long experience and unswerving business ethics, they are the best hotel for spending vacations or planning a brief stay during a business trip.  Along with the requisite facilities, they have also got best standard amenities, which are rare in other Budget Hotel Delhi. They also have their own well-designed restaurant, where you can relish mouth-watering multi-continental delicacies and the best part is that these amenities and luxuries can be availed at surprisingly low rates.

Although, the word cheap sometimes triggers wrong opinions but, one should know that it can also mean affordable. This statement applies to all things, which can either be sold, bought or hired.  Considering the same thing if you do not go to a hotel, which is famous for being cheap then, you are doing a mistake.  It is not so that all cheap hotels are suitable for a memorable stay but there are hotels which despite their cheap tag, are able to deliver high standards of quality in their services and facilities.  There are many Cheap Hotel in Delhi, where you would find excellent accommodation and eating facilities, in contrast to the popular belief of common people.

Karol Bagh is a famous market place for electronic goods and eye-catching and trendy apparels. Its proximity with New Delhi Railway Station makes it an ideal breading ground for budget hotels and shopping complexes.  The moment you disembark at the railway station, you would be surrounded by taxi and auto drivers, who would try to convince you about their knowledge of a good hotel.  This situation is more common with foreigners and tourists coming from different states, who do not have much idea about the collusion between auto drivers and the managers of hotels, which are operating in this area.  Recommending a particular hotel to a tourist, is in their interest and with their glib talk, they try their best to attain this interest.  It's up to your discretion and astuteness, which hotel you finally choose but, not every Cheap Hotel in Delhi is worth staying.

Hotel Karat87 is one hotel which always achieves high occupancy rate irrespective of sordid business ethics adopted by its competitors.  This hotel is most trusted and valued name in the realm of Cheap Hotel in Delhi. They have also successfully brought down the prices of luxuries, by optimizing their resources and intelligent thinking.  Due to their long presence in the hospitality industry, they know exact what a guest expects out of a hotel and how can his stay be made more comfortable and pleasurable.  Their amenities are also better and more affordable than any other name in the domain of budget hotels in Delhi. Their hotel staff is affable, understanding and spontaneous in discharging their duties and interaction with them would make you feel like talking to your own friends.

Hostels Laos

travel hair?

I'm going to south east asia (thailand. cambodia and laos) and don';t know what to do with my hair. Its quite long and cause i'm on a budget and backpacking I can't spend alot of money gettiong it braided.
What should I do with my hair, as I'll often be in dodgy hostels or treking.
Any other travelk advise for women would be great

This is what I always do with my har - it's super easy, you can style wet or dry and it looks great:

Take the top front piece of hair (your bangs or where bangs would be) and pin it back on top in a mini pompadour by pushing it foward a bit and pinning with two bobby pins, crossed. Pull the rest of your hair back in a semi-high, messy bun and pull it a little so it kinda sticks out. Done!

Take clothes that don't wrinkle easily and leave some empty room in your suitcase/backpack for anything you may want to bring back with you.

Have fun!!!!

Driving from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani

I will be joining friends on a 'road trip' in September 2008 and plan on driving from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani - then onto Vientiane in Laos. I have been looking at maps of Thailand and there doesn't seem to be a direct route to Udon. Can anyone tell me what the drive is like and how long the drive is because I don't fancy spending all of my vacation in a car!

I did it once and didn't really enjoy it. The road goes through the mountains and is really curvy. The trip takes about 10 hours.
If I had it to do over I would take the cheap flight, but I tend to get car sick on curvy roads.
