Unlike other southeast Asian capital cities, Vientiane is not a 24/7 frenzy of commerce. Its relaxed atmosphere makes it feel like a small town, which makes a kind of sense, for that is exactly what it is.
If there were a 'Mellowest Capital in the World' competition, Vientiane would win hands down. Backpackers head south to get drunk and float down the river that skirts the village of Vang Vieng. More sophisticated travellers zero in on Laos' luxurious capital, Vientiane, usually before a visit to Luang Prabang. Unusually for a capital, Vientiane lies just over a border - the one with Thailand, just across the Friendship Bridge. The influence that shines through most brightly, however, is French. For a start, the name is gallicised. The original name, Viangchan, which means 'City of the Moon' in the native Lao language, proved too tricky for the French tongue.
Expect French food, French flowers (marigolds), even the Arc de Triomphe - well, a monstrous concrete mockup, known as the Victory Arch. Dubbed the Vertical Runway because it was built with cement donated by the United States in 1969 for airport construction, the arch is a touch taller than the original, to spite the French, but unfinished. A sign blames this on Laos' tumultuous history, presumably meaning the punishment inflicted by the French, Japanese, Chinese, Burmese, Vietnamese, Thais and Americans. But all that was a while back. Even the sign itself recognizes the monument's deficiencies, calling it a 'monster of concrete'. No spin here. Cynics may wonder why the landlocked Communist state still cannot get its act together and finish the job. The decrepitude which the arch epitomises also extends to the streets, so be careful not to step in a pothole or sewer.
Be careful too of the tuk-tuk drivers, who are as enterprising as any you will meet in Asia. Always fix a price and clarify your destination before you jump in. Otherwise, expect to be taken to the wrong side of town for rather more Kip - the not-quite-worthless currency - than you care to cough up. The perfect remedy for a white-knuckle tuk-tuk ride is a session at one of Vientiane's many excellent and ridiculously cheap spas. For a flurry of Kip you can experience a massage far less brutal than the kind meted out by Thai pampering pugilists - and in much more atmospheric surroundings.
Blessed with bags of Indochinese style and with the cheeriest of residents, Vientiane blends Gallic flair with Asian mystique. This style also influences and permeates the sauces and aromas of the exquisite cuisine available in the world-class French restaurants at Fountain Square. For those travellers who are heartily sick of the sweet and sickly white wheat products falsely posturing as 'bread' across almost all of SE Asia, the lunch baguettes and breakfast croissants available throughout most of Laos will make a most welcome change.
The culinary alternative to Fountain Square is the Mekong. Its near bank is lined with scores of cheaper but still good Asian restaurants where diners lounge on mats and watch the sun set over the river while sipping a cold Beer Lao, the default and delicious state brew. If you can tear yourself away from Vientiane's culinary attractions, then maybe visit the Lao National History Museum. Set on the high street, it sounds and looks boring, but is brought to life by its jargon of jingoistic rage against the invader. Check out the photos of sniper peasants and the displays of chunky guns. 'Weapons ordered by the US imperialists for its puppets,' one caption screams.
If your spine can handle the bone-jarring 24 km ride, then take a trip from Vientiane to maybe the area's most memorable attraction: that memory card-consuming icon, Buddha Park sculpture garden. There, tilted at crazy angles, mammoth concrete statues of Buddhist and Hindu gods jostle with fantastical likenesses of real and imaginary beasts. The highlight must be the three-storey giant pumpkin-like representation of Hell, Earth and Heaven, which is entered through the jaws of a demon head. More kitsch than religious, but a fun day out. Apparently designed by Salvador Dali while drugged beyond his eyeballs, Buddha Park dates back to 1958 and owes its existence to the mystic seer Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, who left Laos after the 1975 communist takeover. The park cuts a contrast with the golden and gorgeous downtown temples that stick to the rulebook more but, like Buddha Park, also have a slightly hallucinatory feel about them.
Whilst these attractions are worth a visit, Vientiane lacks the truly monumental and instead captures the senses by its tranquility and idiosyncratic charm. It's a place to eat, people-watch, relax, get a massage, maybe visit one of the respectable night-clubs. Vientiane lacks vibrancy but, for so many visitors with enough energy expenditure in their everyday lives, this is just what the doctor ordered.

Definitely staying hydrated is important. I have flown from LAX to TPE. It is a long flight so bring a book to read. Also the airline should be showing a movie so you can at least watch different movies or listen to music.
The airlines stress getting up and walking around to prevent deep vein thrombosis. In the in-flight magazines, they have some exercises you can do to help circulation.
The airlines will periodically serve you beverages such as juice or water. Do accept the beverage every time it is offered. They may also give you a moist towel to wipe your face since the air sometimes is dry in the cabin.
Enjoy your flight. If you can sleep, try to get some rest. You can try to ask for an emergency exit row since you get more legroom but those seats are usually reserved for those who fly a lot with the airline. You can still ask anyway.

You may fly Luang Prabhang to Hanoi Vietnam or Siem Reap. Both sectors you may either on Lao Aviation Or Vietnam Airlines. Lao Aviation use Fokker 70 while Vietnam use ATR 72. I would choose ATR72 Vietnam Airlines.

A Whale of a time - Similan Islands & Richelieu Rock Liveaboard

Whale sharks are the true behemoths of the aquatic world - they can grow longer than a bus (up to 18 metres in length) yet feast on the smallest of organisms, plankton. However, finding these big fish is not always that easy. Only 9 places in the world, all located in tropical waters, are so far known to have predictable whale shark visits. Thailand is one of the few lucky countries that whale sharks predictably visit.
When arriving in an unfamiliar place it’s always relaxing to receive a warm welcome. As our liveaboard boat approached the southernmost of the Similan Islands, that warm welcome came by way of more than fifty dolphins jumping and playing in the dawn light, beckoning us forward and giving us a glimpse of the treasures we would discover around these stunning islands in Thailand’s Andaman Sea.
Situated off Thailand’s west coast to the northeast of Phuket lie Thailand’s world famous Similan Islands. These stunning granite isles, with their white sandy beaches and densely-forested yet rugged interiors would be ample enough reason on their own account to make the overnight liveaboard boat trip from Phuket. But what really make these islands special are the vast and varied reefs that lie off their shores. It is below the azure blue of these rich waters that you can experience another world, one filled with creatures so colourful, so beautiful and so bizarre that they defy belief.
These crown jewels of scuba diving in Thailand are often touted as one of the top ten dive sites in the world and can be accessed by speed-boat from either Phuket or Kaow Lak, but to truly experience the Similan Islands you must get aboard one of the many liveaboard boats operated out of Phuket. In this way you can take in the variety of diving experiences to be had, all the while becoming spiritually connected to the sea as your body quickly adjusts to the gentle rolling of the boat beneath your feet.
Our journey to the Similans began late in the evening at Ratsada pier in Phuket. As divers arrived to the boat from various locations, the friendly staff helped everyone aboard and quickly got to the task of setting up and organizing equipment. Every diver worth his or her salt knows that you check, double-check and buddy-check your own equipment, but having the staff there to set up and organize all that gear turned what could have been a chaotic scene - complete with wetsuits, regulators and bumping bodies - into a relaxing first evening on board. At about 11pm, after a delicious light meal, we got under way under the moon and stars. The crew lit firecrackers off the bow to ensure a safe journey as we motored into the night. Of course, there are those who were born to be at sea and there are those who need a bit of training. The first night was, for some, a little less than comfortable, while others, like myself, found the gentle rolling of the waves reminiscent of the cradle and were soon dreaming of underwater adventures to come.
By the next morning, with the joyful sight of such a large pod of dolphins, spirits were universally high. The sky was clear and the calm waters had taken on an almost impossibly bright and inviting shade of blue. As the divemaster briefed the divers on the first dive of the day (the “test” dive) the excitement on board became palpable. By just peering overboard you could see that the crystal clear waters were teeming with life. After the briefing and a thorough check of our equipment we were in the water and ready to begin our first dive. The first dive of a trip always begins with a few minutes of uncertainty as even experienced divers have to get used to the idea of being a fish again. But soon we were all back in our respective comfort zones and ready to start playing our roles as guests in an underwater utopia.
After a stunning introduction to the natural wonders that would captivate us for the days to come, we were rounded up by a crew member in a small inflatable motorboat and brought back to our temporary maritime abode. There we were helped out of the water, relieved of our equipment and, once dry, we found a wonderful meal waiting for us on the upper deck. The trip was punctuated by one delicious meal after the next. Different boats cater to different tastes, with some serving mostly Thai fare and others catering to the western palette, but they are all Thai boats and this is a country where eating is priority number one. This means there is never a shortage of good food on these boats; throughout the trip we were constantly and contently stuffed.
Thus the divers on board quickly fell into an idyllic routine. A stunning dive would be followed by a delicious meal. Divers would then disperse to pore over fish guide-books, take a nap in the climate-controlled cabins or compare stories of the wonders encountered below the waves. In the first three days we had seen several beautiful sea turtles, numerous big red octopus, bizarre frogfish, curious garden eels, befuddling ghost pipefish, lethargic leopard sharks, four massive and graceful manta rays and such an array of fish as to leave one breathless (well…not literally!).
But the biggest treat came for us on the final day of our voyage (and when I say biggest I mean that quite literally!)On the morning of our fifth day at sea we motored north out of the Similan Islands National Park towards the famous Richelieu Rock. After listening to the divemaster’s briefing we were donning our equipment when a diver on another boat excitedly babbled that there was a whale shark in the area. The adrenaline level onboard immediately shot through the roof. We could not wait to get into the water for the chance to witness the passage of this gentle, fragile giant, the largest of all the fishes - up close and personal. I stood at the back of the boat with my Buoyancy Control Device and tank strapped on, chomping at the bit. Then, suddenly, right in front of me I saw a shape. A very large shape.

I immediately dived into the water. The rest of the divers followed suit and for a few divine minutes we swam beside one of the most beautiful products of nature’s limitless creativity. When the gentle giant dove below we got back on board yelping, babbling, high-fiving and smiling from ear to ear. Though I’m sure we would all have been very happy with the trip even if the whale shark had not appeared, we all knew then that this had been a special trip that we would all remember for the rest of our days. Whatever was to come of the rest of our dives that day, we were satisfied. But it wasn’t over yet.
We descended to Richelieu Rock and instantly knew why so many consider it to be the best dive site in Thailand. It is a massive feature that is every inch covered in life. The tiniest, most bizarre creatures such as harlequin shrimp, tiger cowries, sea horses and a multitude of beautiful nudibranches can be found alongside large dog-tooth tuna, giant trevally, cuttlefish and beautiful schools of laser-like fusiliers. The list goes on and on. But as we explored the rock that day we were in for yet another special treat. As we rounded a corner I turned around to see my dive buddy face-to-face with another whale shark, this one much larger than the last. Followed by its attendant cobias, remoras and a small school of trevally, this enormous creature circled back and forth past us for fully half an hour!
After making our safety stop and returning to the boat we sat speechless while the boat motored back towards Phuket. As the sun began to dip in the western sky our smiles remained fixed on our faces. We had truly discovered treasures beneath the sea. Treasures, in my opinion, more precious than gold and silver. And as the Similan Islands became specs on the horizon I scanned the sea for our dolphin friends in the hope of offering a little ‘thank you’ for their hospitality, but they were nowhere to be seen. Perhaps they were busy preparing to welcome their next group of guests to what I can only describe as ‘paradise’.

Different from many famous mountains in China, it rises from the sea level, and has a coast line of 87 kilometers, structuring a wonder on the sea. The main peak, named Large Peak or Peak Lao, is over 1100 meters high above sea level. Take a walk around, with the sea on one side, and lofty stones and precipitous peaks on the other side, both majestic and elegant.
Natural scene
China has vast territory and abundant resources, so if you have a trip you will have a broad look of different views. Now, the natural scene I will introduce is Guilin, in Guangxi Province, it is the capital of Guangxi, which located in the south of China. Guilin is the typical landscape of the south area in China. The famous attractions is Li River, which surrounding the mountains. When the sunlight sparks on the river, it looks like a liquid jade belt. A cruise along the Li River between Guilin and Yangshuo is an unforgettable experience. As you take in the stunning scenery there's something interesting to see at almost every bend in the river. Between spectacular limestone peaks you'll see graceful bamboo groves, farmers tending rice paddies, and lumbering water buffaloes pulling carts or cooling off in the river. You may see fishermen gliding along on their narrow bamboo rafts, and if you're very lucky you might see one of the famous fishing cormorants. Boats depart from various wharves, according to the height of the river at different times of the year.

I'm from Melbourne and I have a flight booked for Bangkok on the 24th of January to travel in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos for 1 month. The only problem is that my fiancee can no longer come as he just recived a role as an extra for Speilberg's Pacific War (which means the world to him as he wants to become an actor). There is no way that we can change the name on the ticket and due to my uni semester this is the only time I can go. Now it looks like I have to go alone, I'm 20 yo and have never left Australia. What should I do. I'm sort of scared obviously, as it's a foreign country and all I can say is sa wad dii! Any tips or suggestions on escaping complete boredom and safety by myself would be great!
Two things: 1) You have a problem. The airlines won't change names, but re-issue the entire ticket in the new name. You will then have to apply for a refund for the cancelled ticket. There will probably be a charge. 2) Thailand is great for travelling. There are many backpackers and people your age bumming around the place. It is very friendly (but always be cautious). There will not be an issue going by yourself but it is always a lot more fun to experience it with someone else. Get the costs together and market it to your friends and family. There is always someone who wants to go!

For many the first sighting of the majestic Angkor temples was through the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movie with Angelina Jolie. Who could forget the sight of the giant trees with massive root structures engulfing the roofs and walls of the Ta Phrom temple?
The Ta Phrom temple is but one temple in the Angkor Park, with the most well known and photographed being Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. The Angkor temple complex is a World Heritage site noted not only for its architecture but its massive carved reliefs which are works of art in their own right.
Angkor Wat is situated in the North Western area of Cambodia in Siem Reap City. The easiest and quickest route there is by air landing at the Siem Reap International Airport. The airport which is Cambodia’s second largest is located 7 kilometres from the city centre.
The Siem Reap International Airport is serviced by over twenty different airlines. These cities include Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Vientiane, Taipei, Incheon and Canton. A bonus for travellers is that they may get an aerial glimpse of Angkor Wat on their flights into or out of the Airport.
Besides direct flights travellers can be redirected from Cambodia’s Capital City Airport, The Phnom Penh International Airport. This is a short forty five minute flight from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. In comparison the bus trip over the sealed highway or the boat trip up the Tonie Sap Lake would take five to six hours.
For the more adventurous, there is an overland route from Bangkok, Thailand via the border at Poi Pet. Travellers face a nine to ten hour bus trip to their Angkor destination albeit at a far cheaper price. Once in Siem Reap the treasures of the Angkor temples await them.

Hi guys, me and my partner are going to Thailand in march. We want to spend a day or 2 in Bangkok first then travel to Laos and spend a few days there then travel to Krabi for the final week of our holiday. Does anyone have any experience in travelling around Thailand? Whats the cheapest way to travel from Bangkok to Laos then Krabi? Id rather not have to go by bus as am not good in cramped stuffy places! Is it better to book internal flights online before the holiday or should we wait til we get there and see what they have to offer? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! The cheapest flights are on line paying by credit card - this will allow you to take advantage of any promotions that are offered - 50% off - you need to monitor the internal airlines to find the cheapest day/time to fly. You can also get to Laos by train from Bangkok - but you will need a first class sleeper unless the "Tenko" lifestyle appeals. Your packing a lot of travel into a short time - I would consider 2 weeks as a minimum and possibly do it over 2 holidays and not 1

Why Are Numbers So Important?
Many Chinese people will have their Feng Shui consultant or Chinese astrologer choose appropriate numbers for them that will benefit their horoscope or their home. It is quite common to see certain combinations of numbers appearing on the licence plates of cars, business telephone numbers and street addresses. It is a complex procedure, but the combination of the various facets of your horoscope can produce for you certain lucky numbers and many gamblers in Hong Kong and Malaysia and China have found out what they consider is their winning combination!
When studying or reading about authentic Feng Shui in the West, it is important to differentiate between the science of this magnificent system and Chinese superstition. To this end, the number 4 is widely regarded by the Chinese as an unlucky number. Why? It is simply in the pronunciation, whether in Cantonese or Mandarin, that 4 is pronounced ‘sih' which also sounds very close to the Chinese name of Death. It is simply for this reason, rather like in the West where the number 13 is considered unlucky, that the Chinese try to avoid using the number 4 in their address. Culturally, it is considered unlucky.
Numbers and Feng Shui Theory
There are several different formulas that are used by Feng Shui Masters that incorporate the use of numbers. Different Schools of Feng Shui have different applications for the numbers, but there are certain threads that ring true for all the different Schools.
To begin with, all Schools recognise that the 9 numbers, beginning with number 1 through to 9, can be allotted to one of the Five Elements, to the seasons, to a phase of growth and, with the exception of number 5, a Trigram from the I Ching.
Since Feng Shui is the skill of being in ‘the right place at the right time', it is important to remember that there are 20-year cycles of time, which are each governed by one of the numbers. E.g., the 7 Fate covered 1984-2004 and the 8 Fate begins on the 4th February 2004 through until the 3rd February 2024.
As a result, in 2004 the number 8 becomes very dominant and powerful. The next two Fates that will be coming into line are the 9 and the 1, and these numbers are getting stronger at present. Numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5 are very quiet and in a hibernation mode. The numbers 6 and 7 have recently had their say and are waning in power.
Therefore the most powerful numbers to choose at present are the 8, the 9 and the 1.
Useful Examples

Have a look at your telephone number, the number of your home, or the licence plate of your car, and see what kind of symbolism it may reveal. No trains in Laos, and only one in Cambodia which does or does not run depending on who you ask. You can travel by train in Thailand to the borders but then it's bus from there.
