Biking & Cruising in Hue Duration

Overview

Get a closer look into the history and culture of Hue. We cruise to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda, one of the best know religious sites in the city. Then cycle to Phu Mong, take in a traditional garden house and craft houses, enjoy a serene life here.

Day 1:  Biking Cruising in Hue ( Lunch )

We will cycle from your hotel to the Wharf and then take a short boat ride on the Perfume River to Thien Mu Pagoda, one of the best know Buddhist sites in the city. Afterwards we cycle to Hue's garden-houses, that are part of Hue's cultural legacy, present since the Nguyen Dynasty built its capital there over 200 years ago. Like other garden houses in Hue, the Phu Mong garden house typically has two main areas: the wooded house and the surrounding garden, designed according to geomancy, and their owners' spiritual life and skilfulness. On the way cycling back, we stop at Ngoc Son temple, visit more Hue garden house with introduction by the house's owner, then have tea, cakes and ginger jam. Visit to Hue's Dong Ba Market and lesser known Bao Vinh, the older commercial area of Hue. Have a Lunch at Vuon Y Thao garden house restaurant before coming back to the hotel.

Laos Travelling

laos travelling_2="laos travelling"
Do you need to apply for visa's before travelling to Vietnam, Thailand and Laos?

If travelling on a British passport and staying for less than 30 days in each. Do they issue them there without hassles?

You need visas for all of them. However, Thailand issues a visa on arrival - you'll get a form on the plane, fill it in and hand it over when you go through passport control and you'll get an automatic 30 day visa. It doesn't cost anything.

For Vietnam you're best off pre-applying for your visa:

Vietnam is about £38
http://www.vietnamembassy.org.uk/consular.html#instruction

For Laos, you can get visa on arrival which will give you 15 days, but if you pre-apply you will get 30 days. However, there isn't an embassy for Laos in the UK, so you may want to talk to your travel agent on how best to go about this.

Discover the New Meaning of Laid Back via a Wat Phou Cruise in Southern Laos

An almost forgotten Khmer temple and a relaxing boat ride. This is an ubeatable holiday combination. Revel in the chill-out atmosphere and ambiance of the region with a boat ride along the Mekong. Discover beautiful treasures and artifacts while enjoying the exotic scenes of people living in southern Laos in our Wat Phou Cruise.

Enjoy a leisurely cruise along the slow-flowing Mekong River. Embrace its fascinating beauty, while enjoying the exotic scenes of people living in southern Laos and the mystic ancient Khmer ruins.

The main attraction (one of many actually) is the centuries almost millennium old Khmer temple. The site itself is believed to have originated from the 5th century and the remaining structures that you will see are from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. As with many other Khmer temples, Wat Phou was originally a Hindu temple that later changed to a Buddhist site of worship.

After a peaceful night on aboard followed by a hearty breakfast, the boat will cruise over to Sipandon, also known as the 4000 islands. Are there really 4000 islands here? It depends on the season. During the wet, many of the islets are submerged under water, however, the dry reveals the region's numerous islets.

The concept of chill-out takes on a whole new meaning here. Most of the islands are small enough for you to get around by foot, but a bicycle might be necessary to reach some of the further ones. Bikes can be rented at just about anywhere, so no worries there. While you are down here, take the time to absorb the culture at the traditional Lao village of Ban Dua Tae.

Nearby is Pha Pheng Falls. The waterfall's 21-meter height and segmented cascades are a sight to behold, along with the always clear blue waters. The Mekong Giant Catfish, believed to be the largest freshwater fish in the world resides in these waters.

There's no place like Laos. Everyone has mentioned of its laid-back ambiance and overall chill-out atmosphere. Why not experience it for your self with one of our Laos tours? If you're looking for a break, take a look at Laos.

Laos Information

laos information_5="laos information"

Vientiane is Laos' small Capital, Offering as much Flair & Character as any other in Southeast Asia

Welcome to Vientiane. Yes, this small town is the country's biggest and capital city. Just imagine a capital city with less than 200,000 people in its downtown area and just about 700,000 in its entire prefecture. Quite a small town, don't you think? But that doesn't mean it's lacking in any character and flair. Vientiane holds her fair share of relics, monuments and structures, with the occasional moment for you to just kick back at a local restaurant or café and watch the slow pace of life unfold.

First let's get into some legend about how the city (we'll call Vientiane a city from now on) came to fruition. Two royal brothers, with the younger one favored to take over the throne instead of his older sibling naturally became rivals because of this. So, he headed on out to find his new city, firstly crossing the river into what is now Udon Thani, Thailand. However, a seven headed serpent like deity  (naga) informed him that he'd be better served to build a city on the other side of the river. That is today's Vientiane.

This nicely sets the tone for what to expect out of the city. Not that seven headed snakes are going to appear, but Vientiane is filled with wonder, mystique and amazement.

So, what are the sites to be at? You can't experience Vientiane without visiting Wat Sisaket. The telling feature(s) here are its hundreds if not thousands of Buddha images places in cloisters in the wall. In front of them are some bigger ones, all culminating into a fantastic temple interior scene.

Looking for a clone of the Arc d'Triomphe? Patuxai certainly comes close. Built in 1957, the victory monument was built in dedication to those who fought for Laos' independence from France. It may look like the famous Parisian structure, but there are Lao elements in the design.

You certainly can't miss out on Pha That Luang, the city's and country's main symbol. The gold stupa includes many references of Lao culture, design, architecture and identity, making it the obvious choice as the national symbol. The area is also hosts an art gallery, with fine displays of paintings by local artists.

Looking for the weird and unusual? Just 30 kilometers from Vientiane along the Mekong River is Buddha Park. Built in 1958, there are over 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues there, made of reinforced concrete and designed to look centuries old. Most if not all of these images are rather strange and obscure, with pumpkins, demons, several headed and multiple faced deities and the like in attandance.

Get the complete lowdown of the capital and experience the city's character with a full day Vientiane tour experience.  But wait, there's more. If you're looking for a complete Lao experience, then look no further than our Laos tour page.

Backpacking In Laos

backpacking in laos_4="backpacking in laos"
I want to backpack Southeast Asia?

I want to do Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. Am I able to buy a 1-way ticket to Saigon and just travel around, or do I need to show onward travel when I land in any of these countries? Also, would I be able to buy a round trip ticket to Thailand for say 90 days, and then travel to Laos, cambodia, Vietnam and back to Thailand by land? (the max stay for flight into Thailand is 30 days)

Rules may says you need to show a return ticket upon arrival, but in reality you don't.

Depending on your nationality, if you arrive by air, you can get entry stamps or visa on arrival allowing you to stay 30 days in Thailand, 30 days in Cambodia, 15 days in Vietnam, and 30 days in Laos.

If you arrive over land, you'll be allowed 15 days in Thailand. Still 30 days in both Cambodia and Laos, but only if you arrive at certain (not all) border crossings.

So, it might be best if you fly to Bangkok then apply for Vietnamese visa and go over land to HCMC via Cambodia. In HCMC, you can then get a visa to Laos or fly to Vientiane and get a visa on arrival.

Puerto Vallarta Real Estate Continues to Benefit from a Strong Tourism Economy: Government Programs and Hotels’ Promotions Result in Strong Summer Num

In an earlier article from the TOPMexicoRealEstate  NETWORK,  “Your Expert Property Finders,” it was mentioned that Puerto Vallarta real estate was going to benefit from programs from the Mexican federal government and the state government to boost tourism, which is the main and only industry in the Puerto Vallarta real estate area.  The final statistics from the summer tourist season now show us that these programs, along with strong promotional efforts from Vallarta’s tourist service providers, now show us that the effort has indeed paid off.  The area’s tourism industry not only matched last year’s numbers, but has actually shown modest improvement. According to official statistics from the state Ministry of Tourism, Puerto Vallarta showed positive trend, along with other destinations studied in the state of Jalisco .

There was some uncertainty about the strength of the industry in the face of the drastic drop off experienced during the swine flu travel advisory, but Puerto Vallarta’s tourist service providers reacted to the circumstances.

In the Puerto Vallarta real estate area, week 33 of this year (August 16 to 22), the second last week of the summer tourism season, had a hotel occupancy of 65%, compared to the slightly lower 61% of last year.   The state of Jalisco in general enjoyed a slightly smaller increase to 54.5% from 53.5 last year during the same week.  Vallarta fared significantly better than Mexico on the whole, which dropped 6.5%.

Part of the success of this summer’s tourism in Jalisco is linked to the Campaign for Tourist Attention and Information (Campaña de Atención e Información al Turista) held in the Summer Holiday season 2009, from 10 July to 21 August, in which the Ministry of Tourism of Jalisco offered  120 free tours to within the state, as part of a program to revive the tourism industry.  The program brought families to 40 destinations in different regions of Jalisco.

One million 200 thousand pesos were invested to make these tours possible, with a thousand 537 families benefited, which is the equivelent of 6 thousand 148 people who enjoyed the tourist destinations of their own state.  About a thousand 764 people were elderly.

Another part of the program was a special bus tour offered to the hearing impaired, who had the opportunity to travel to Chapala and Ajijic, the tour was conducted through the DIF Jalisco.  The tour was supported by two interpreters to translate the guide’s tourist information - slightly different from the usual translations we‘re used to.

In addition to support from Puerto Vallarta’s Delegation of Tourism, support was also given by the Delegations of Tourism of la Zona de los Altos, Costalegre and Chapala to make these tours possible in terms of the logistics of traveling, including overnight stays.  Some support was also given by Sayula Tuxcueca, Tuxpan, Colotlan, Hidalgo and San Martín Bolaños.

While the tourism in Puerto Vallarta has seen a significant recovery the industry must now face the off season before the winter tourist season - which brings more international visitors.  However, Puerto Vallarta has shown that its tourism industry can survive, and even come out on top of difficult times.  The good news for property owners and future buyers is that Puerto Vallarta real estate will continue to benefit from a resilient tourism economy.

Thai Visa entering and re-entering - 30 day limit?

I am leaving for Thailand in mid July and I won't be returning until the beginning of September, and I will be flying back home from Bangkok. But during my month and a half long sta I am planning to spend time in Cambodia and Laos so there is no real need for me to pay to get a tourist visa as I will be exiting and re-entering the country twice. But looking at the official rules it says I must either have a Thai tourist visa or if not I must have an airline ticket leaving Thailand within the 30 days when I first arrive. I am not sure what to do, how am I supposed to prove I am leaving Thailand to go into Laos and Cambodia.

Anyone with any advice I would be very grateful.

It would usually be the airlines that will check for a round trip ticket not immigrations. Even with that airlines don't do it most of the time. In your case you have a round trip ticket, the dates doesn't matter as long as you have your round trip ticket your Ok.

As for your trips to Cambodia and Laos just keep in mind that the visa exempt rules are 30 days if you arrive in Thailand by air and 15 days if you arrive into Thailand by a border crossing.

Also on your plane trip here you will be given an arrival/departure card to fill out. You need to fill out both the arrival and the departure portion of this card and this will show when you leave Thailand to go to Cambodia or Laos.

Tourism Destination Management

The Medical Tourism Spotlight is On New Zealand

If you're living with chronic knee or hip pain at night, or are seeking hip or knee pain relief, then you've probably already visited a doctor. Depending on your condition he may have recommended hip replacement surgery, knee replacement surgery or hip resurfacing surgery. And, depending on your current insurance program you've likely seen how expensive those surgeries can be.

There is an alternative option to paying the high U.S. cost of these procedures – medical or health tourism in New Zealand. Of course you can elect not to have knee or hip replacement surgery at all, but managing the pain and what it does to your quality of life may make this choice unfeasible. Health tourism can reduce surgery costs significantly, but pricing considerations aside, there are certain risks – seen or not – that you need to consider before choosing your health tourism destination, including:

  • ‘Superbugs' and other infectious diseases

  • The number of vaccinations required for travel to certain health tourism destinations

  • The travel time needed to get to certain health tourism destinations

  • Risk of terrorism and other violence

  • The quality of technology used at the medical facilities at certain health tourism destinations

  • The quality of the food and water at certain health tourism destinations

People interested in health tourism as an option need to consider the larger picture, beyond the procedure itself; from the beginning of your travel for hip or knee pain relief, to the facilities and personalized care, to the recovery period before your travel home. It needs to be stress and problem free so you can get back to enjoying your quality of life faster. That's why New Zealand is a fantastic option!

Recently, according to the 2010 Global Peace Index, New Zealand was rated as the world's most peaceful country. It was rated very low or at low risk in the following areas:

  • Level of violent crime

  • Number of homicides

  • Level of organized conflict

  • Potential for terrorism

  • Political instability

  • Hostility toward foreign travelers

New Zealand has extremely low rates of the infectious diseases MRSA, Hepatitis A, VRE, Tuberculosis, and HIV. Most other, popular destinations for health tourism require or strongly urge vaccinations for typhoid, malaria, rabies, hepatitis A, and Japanese encephalitis. Traveling to New Zealand requires no vaccinations!

In New Zealand, the food is safe and the water is clean. Food safety standards are strictly regulated by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority and Food Standards Australia & New Zealand.

In New Zealand, the medical facilities are clean and state-of-the-art, all using the latest technologies. The doctors and medical staff are all highly-trained – many in fact are trained in the U.S. English is the primary language in New Zealand, a factor that is so important when discussing a major medical treatment such as knee or hip replacement surgery.

New Zealand is also easier to get to than many other health tourism destinations. Direct flights from Los Angeles will have you in Auckland in just about 12 hours.

New Zealand is on the cusp of becoming a major destination for health tourism. Knee replacement surgery, hip replacement surgery, and hip resurfacing surgery can be performed at up to 50% less than the cost of the same procedure in the U.S. You don't have to live with chronic pain anymore.

Today, the royal palace is a museum, housing holy icons, paintings and china. Another, more fantastic collection of relics lies upstream along the Mekong in the Pak Ou Caves. At the Mekong's confluence with the Nam Ou, a cave in a bluff on the river keeps a pantheon of small Buddhist statues.

UNESCO hailed Luang Prabang as the "the best preserved city in Asia" when the organization inscribed the destination in 1995. Nothing has changed about that since.

Kuang Si Falls

A Land of Temples, Nature, People and Laid Back Ambiance; Step into the Wild, Step into Laos

Come to Laos and enjoy its spectrum of attributes that make this landlocked country one of Southeast Asia's most unique. Ranging from its cultural treasures, tropical natural scenery, hilltribe settlements and of course, its laid back attitude and ambiance, the country will surely grow on you. Get ready for Laos and prepare yourself for a spiritual, enlightening and wonderful journey.

This enlightening experience starts in the Shangri La of the Mekong Valley, Luang Prabang. The UNESCO Heritage town's appeal lies in its mass amounts of golden roofed temples set in an environment of tree-lines streets and faded colonial structures. In addition to these temples, you'll learn about the town's heritage at The former Royal Palace, now the National Museum and at the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Center where you will learn more about local hilltribes.

Luang Prabang is also your base to two endearing and wonderful sites. First is the majestic and grand Kuang Si Falls. This is one of Laos' most popular and it is easy to see why. Towering rapids crashing into turquoise blue pools with lush vegetation surrounding it make this a tempting place for a swim, picnic or trek. Next up, after a trip along the Mekong is Pak Ou. These caves are home to thousands of Buddha images, left by followers throughout the years as a sign of respect to these lands.

It's now time to head off to the countryside. Set out to the sleepy town of Nong Khiaw. Here, you'll enjoy a night safari in Ban Son Koua, an ethnic Khmu Village. Take a short tour of the village where you will learn about the animist tradition of the villagers. Cruise the Nam Nern River by long tail boat, along the way learning about upland rice cultivation and observing the exotic wildlife and pristine nature. Turn off the engines and open the headlights and catch the site of some amazing animals including the Sambar Deer, otters, various species of civets, the Slow Loris, porcupines, owls, badgers, the Asian Golden Cat and several species of wild dogs.

Next up is Xamneua. Here, you'll lay witness to some fascinating weaving and textile houses where some stunning works are being made. Head over to the market and see the colorful pieces from different tribes emerge into one place. Into the Wild then concludes at Viengxay, a traditional and sleepy town surrounded by lush forests and limestone karsts. The town is also home to an underground network, a hidden city of sorts, where citizens lived in order to escape bombings of the area in the 1960's and 1970's. Tour this and the area's sweet natural surroundings.

This eight day tour of Laos is not enough for you? It may not be for many, that is why you can always connect this one with any of our Laos tours. Landlocked Laos is one of those destinations that travelers will find excuses to never leave.

Backpacking Around South East Asia

backpacking around south east asia="backpacking around south east asia"

The 1 Minute Backpackers Guide

Before you and your backpack head off for a hiking adventure, make sure you have all the essential items you need. You may have your own ideas of what should be in your pack but please take 1 minute to read this checklist and hopefully you wont end up with a sore back.

PRIORITY NUMBER 1: a good strong Backpack! How can you go for a wild backpacking adventure with a cheap useless backpack? Pick one which is comfortable and fits well on you. A custom fitted backpack is crucial. You are going hiking and the last thing you need is a backpack gouging into your shoulders. Make sure it fits as comfortable as possible, you could be carrying it for thousands of miles. Purchase one with a lock and key as well, if you can't find one with a lock and key, then buy a separate padlock to keep your belongings safe.

Two of the most important elements of your backpacking journey will be, sleep and walking, hopefully not together. Pick a pair of very comfy walking shoes because, you will learn soon enough that walking is going to be a major part of your backpacking adventure. A pillow case and lightweight sleeping bag are essential items to keep when you stay in accommodation for backpackers. The pillow case is great because you know your head is the only one which has slept on it and it wont need too much regular washing. A sleeping bag will improve your sleep if your bag is comfortable and you can always pull out a few clothes to stuff in the pillow case for a custom sized pillow.

"DON'T FORGET YOUR PASSPORT"! This little booklet is the key to you leaving your home country and the same key, which will allow you to enter and leave many other countries. Without it, well, you wont be going anywhere. Separate your cash and travelers cheques into different compartments on your backpack and, keep some about your person. This way, "IF" robbers strike or "IF", you lose your backpack, you can ensure you have something left. In addition, find yourself a comprehensive travel guide but one, which only has the essential info you need.

Most backpacks have a detachable daypack. This little pack can easily carry your essential items for a day trip, like a camera, journal, one or two travelers cheques and flip flops. Flip flops I hear you ask? Flip flops can be very useful when you take a shower in places you may not normally take a shower.

Mini packs of toothpaste, shampoo, sun cream, wet wipes, body spray or roll on, soap and a small bag of laundry powder will all keep you clean and feeling fresh for the first few weeks of your journey. Restock at different stages on your travels. A tiny first aid kit could prove very handy and finally, a quick drying towel! You don't want to be carrying a heavy, damp towel on your back for miles and miles.

Take just enough underwear & socks for a week and make sure your socks are 100% cotton so your feet can breathe. You might also want to pack a pair of long Johns. This depends on the season and place where you are traveling. You might need your long underwear when you stay in accommodation with a poor heating system. Pack a lightweight raincoat or kagool, especially for tropical or rainy countries like those in South America or South East Asia.
