Planning a trip to Laos? By now you might have done your research, and know a bit about Laos. You might already get excited and dream of the place you're heading to. But wait! You need to plan your trip a bit before you go.

A careful planning plays an essential role in determining your travel experience (good or not so-good). Here are some tips to keep in mind when planning a trip to Laos.

If you plan to go to other countries in the region before or after Laos (e.g Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam), at least determine where to go first, next and last plus the entry/exit points in Laos. It's important to have a clear plan to avoid doubling back that can eat up your time and money.

• Plan your itinerary carefully. It helps saving hassle, time and money if you plan your routs thoroughly.


• Decide where and how to get your tourist visa. Tourist visas are now valid for 30 days. Here are two ways to get the Lao visa:


• Arrange it with the Lao Embassy, either in your neighbor countries if there isn't one in your own country or in one of Laos's neighboring countries (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and China). Allow plenty of time if you chose this option.


• Get it at Lao border or airport. Tourist visa is issued at most Lao ports of entry. Visa fee ranges from US$20 (China) to US$42 (Canada). Remember to take exact amount of money and 2 passport photos for that.

 

Please note that not everyone is eligible for Lao visa-on-arrival, you better checkto make sure you aren't in the list of "not entitle" nationalities.

• Get your passport ready. Make sure your passport is not expiring within the next six months. You won't be given a visa to enter Laos if your passport has less than six months validity. It can be worse if you plan to get a Lao visa-on-arrival, and arrive at a Lao border or Airport only to find your passport is invalid.


• If you consider taking anti-malarial drugs, take it well in advance because you might have awful reactions to anti-malarial. If you take it too close to your travel date, you may still feel awful on your vacation. It's best to ask your doctor.


• Sort out your traveler check or credit card(s) for use in Laos. Take some cash as well. Small notes make it easy when you need to buy things on the go like bottled water and snacks.


• Book/buy your tickets early. Book your ticket as soon as you have a clear plan. You can save good amount of money by purchasing your ticket early. Stay with the same airline during your entire trip to receive round-trip or connecting fare discounts.


• If you're on medication ask your doctor for your prescribed medicine. Take enough for the period of your travel. It's a good practice to keep them in their original packages (in case you have to declare at the airport security checkpoint). Putting them in your carry-on bag to ensure that you have your medicine whenever you need.

Laos is a wonderful country and one that is worth as few weeks of any serious travellers time. No-one leaves Laos disappointed, finding it an ideal destination to escape from the grind and stresses of day-to-day life. Travelling on a private adventure itinerary is a great way to see the country. The roads are bad...really bad, the distances are long and the public transport is lacking in comfort, convenience and punctuality. In the south you should make a beeline for Si Phan Don, the Four Thousand Islands, a landlocked archipelago and home to some of Laos' most traditional villages as well as rare freshwater dolphins and the thundering waterfalls.

best way to travel by land from Bangkok to Laos/Camodia/HCMC?

For the first 3 weeks of our holiday we want to travel to
Vietnam and Cambodia (and possibly Laos) before going back over to Thailand. I know we wont have a lot of time in each place but was wondering if anyone knew the best route to take by land to each place? what buses/trains boats to take and time scales of travel? The flights to these places are adding up to a couple of hundred pounds each which will take a lot of our money up so we want to do as cheap as possbile especially since the exchange rate is so bad to the £ at the moment, we dont mind travelling by land as have done overnight train before to phuket..

if anyone has any info they could share, that would be much appreciated

Take a bus from Bangkok to Aranyprathet. Takes about 4-5 hours. Tuk-tuk from the station to the border, walk across the border and take a shared taxi to Siem Reap, about 4 hours. See the temples of Angkor for a few days then take a bus to Phnom Penh. See the history of the Khmer Rouge. Boat from Phnom Penh to Chau Doc, Vietnam - takes about 6 hours. From there you can see the Mekong Delta or head for HCMC. Use overnight trains through Vietnam. From northern Vietnam it will take at least a day to get to a recognisable place in Laos. From Laos head towards Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand.
Personally, I think you're squeezing too much in. 3 weeks in Vietnam alone would be very little. The itinerary above will see you lose at least one week of your 3 weeks travelling. Cambodia and Laos have little to no rail systems so overnight trains are not an option there. I would choose two of the four countries and spend a week and a half in each, possibly flying with Air Asia. That way at least you'll get to see some of the major sights in each.
Laos is fantastic but it takes a long time even to get between places inside the country (often between 6 and 10 hours on a bus depending on where you are going). Getting to the borders and then crossing will take a lot of your time up there.

What is the most cost and time effective way to get from Laos to Hanoi?

We are backpacking around South East Asia, and are really struggling with this part of the trip. Apparently there is no direct bus or train route, or buses can take up to three days, and we have looked at flights and they are a bit more then we are willing to pay. About 170 USD. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how this can be achieved?

Sapa, nestling in a beautiful valley on the border with China, is northwest Vietnam’s most colorful destination.

Vivid green rice terraces are sculpted into the mountain sides while in the fields H’mong and Dao women work dressed in colorful traditional clothes.

At the end of the week the H’mong, Dao and other ethnic minorities trek into town from the surrounding countryside to trade goods at the weekend markets in Sapa, Bac Ha and other small towns. Here they sell silver jewellery, traditional embroidered fabrics and authentic articles of hill tribe clothing at the markets.

Sapa and its environs has some of the best trekking in Vietnam and there are many ethnic minority villages that can be reached in day treks from Sapa or for a real hill tribe experience it is possible to stay overnight in local villages along the way. The scenery is spectacular, especially in spring and autumn when the skies are clear and blue, and the people are welcoming. Dominating the Sapa skyline is the peak of Vietnam’s highest mountain, Mount Fan Si Pan, rising to 3,143m above sea level.

Nothing can prepare you for the riot of color and activity at the regional minority markets that can be found dotted around the Sapa region. Make sure you've brought enough film or your camera's batteries are fully charged, as they are a photographer's delight!

Pha Long Market - Saturday
From 6 am to midday
Very rural market, ethnic groups include, the H’mong, Tou Zi, Pa Zi and Tou Lao. Along the road can be found several Nung and Mong villages, often consisting of traditional houses constructed with baked earth tiled roofs.

Can Cau Market - Saturday
Saturday morning 6 am to midday
In the middle of paddy and corn fields. Visitors are generally H’mong groups from highland villages. The local H’mong are the famous variegated or Flower H’mong due to the intricate and colourful nature of their costumes. Travel is often made by horseback as a way of carrying the heavy loads to and from market.

Muong Hum Market - Sunday
Every Sunday from 6 am to 1 pm.
This market is the biggest cardamom market in the region, pre-dating the French and serves as a meeting point for the ethnic groups living in the mountains; including the Giay, Dao, White H’mong and Ha Nhi. Those who live in the upper reaches of the mountains such as the Mong or Red Dao come down to sell specific products such as cardamom and mountain plants. In Muong Hum, it's worth taking a sip of the local brew - here it's paddy rice brandy from the Dao village of San Lung. It's become quite a famous tipple.

Muong Khuong - Sunday
Every Sunday from 6 am to 1 pm.
Big market with a variety of ethnic groups, Mong, Dao, Nung and others, including visitors from as far away as China come to sell their products. Pa Zi women can be found selling traditional incense made from bark and resin of scented trees.

Bac Ha Market - Sunday
From 8 am to lunchtime
The biggest ethnic market in Lao Cai province. Here you will be able to find, buffaloes, horses, blacksmiths, saddlers, traditional medicine doctors, clothing and local artifacts. Frequented by H’mong, Dao, Tay, Nung and Phu La. Be sure to arrive by 9am as the market finished around lunchtime.

Binh Lu & Tam Duong Market - Sunday
Every Sunday from 8 am to 1 pm.
Binh Lu and Tam Duong market is located on the other side of Sapa, passing the 1900 meter Tram Ton pass, Viet Nam's highest mountain pass and considered the most beautiful stretch of road in the country. The town is bustling with activity as the local hill tribes gather for their weekly market day, amazing tribal markets in Binh Lu where thousand of Thai Kadai language groups such as Tai Lu, Tai Laos, White Tai, and H'mong - Yao group (black Yao, Yao Lantien..), Giay, Khomu.. comes to buy and sell their own produces.

Coc Ly Market - Tuesday
From 7 am to lunchtime
Off the beaten track. Several groups of Mong, Dao, Tay, Nung and Phu La groups can be found in this secluded mountain market. Return back by boat down the river Chay and marvel at the untouched natural beauty of the region.
