Tours Of Laos

What is the most cost and time effective way to get from Laos to Hanoi?

We are backpacking around South East Asia, and are really struggling with this part of the trip. Apparently there is no direct bus or train route, or buses can take up to three days, and we have looked at flights and they are a bit more then we are willing to pay. About 170 USD. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how this can be achieved?
Also, if you have any suggestions on which tour group to use in Halong bay that would also be appreciated.
Thank you,

You can take a bus from Vientiane to Hanoi , and it's a 24 hour ride - a night and a day, not 3 days. A few years ago, reports from travellers said that this was a rough ride on poor roads though mountainous areas, but offset by spectacular scenery so well worth doing. Latest reports suggest that things have improved, with better roads and a more modern bus with sleeper bunks, at least on three days a week.

Here's the schedule:

Vientiane ► Hanoi

Days of running- Modern Sleeper Bus: Tues, Thurs, Sat - Older Sleeper Bus: Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun
Vientiane depart: 19:00 day 1 Hanoi arrive: 19:00 day 2

Fares
550,000 VND (£20 or $30)
The price is the same whichever bus you use.

The ticket office phone number in Vientiane is (020) 98112233, and the RD Guesthouse in Vientiane can also arrange tickets. Or simply ask for a bus ticket at any travel agency or guesthouse in Vientiane.

Thai Visa 2 entrys within 90 days?

Hey guys,

I'm a UK citizen, and have a Visa question...

I'll be entering Thailand by air on the 16th September until the 30th when I will be touring Vietnam and Cambodia (via 2 weeks in Laos) until the 12th of November 2009 when I will be returning to Thailand for a further 30 days until the 12th December when I fly to Melbourne (ticket booked).

My question is, which visa do I need? As I believe 30 days is granted on arrival, but I'm unsure as to what I need to do for my 2nd entry. I have all the forms in front of me, but it's confusing to say the least.

Thanks in advance

It depends on how you enter Thailand on your second visit. You are correct that you will get a 30 day visa exemption when you enter Thailand by air on your first visit. However, if you re-enter Thailand from Laos through a land border, you will only receive 15 days on your 2nd entry. You need to enter through an international airport to be able to get a fresh 30 day visa exemption.
Either get a tourist visa for your 2nd entry, re-enter Thailand by air when you return for another 30 day visa exemption, or do another visa run to Laos or a neighboring country before your 15 days are up to get another 15 days. A double entry 60 day visa might be the easiest way to go and visa fees at embassies or consulates have been waived until next March.
