Laos Hotels and Holidays

By
Luang Prabang, Laos

Properly known as Lao People's Democratic Republic, Laos is a country in South East Asia. Like the neighbouring countries of Vietnam and Cambodia to the south, Laos's architecture reflects the traditional styles of Indochina combined with French colonial influence of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. On Laos holidays you will see buildings and temples with staggered, overlapping roofs like the shell, and golden temples with ornate carvings.

Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang, a popular tourist destination and UNESCO World Heritage site, is located in the North of Laos where the Nam Khane River meets the Mekong. Although it is a small town, Luang Prabang was once the capital city of Laos. You will quickly notice the strong influence of Buddhism here, the town being home to eighty monasteries. As well as its many monks, this area was once known as "the kingdom of a million elephants," so you will be able to enjoy an elephant ride on your Laos holidays here.

The 3 Nagas Hotel

One of the most historic of the Laos luxury hotels in this region is the 3 Nagas by Alila. It is a boutique Laos hotel comprised of three buildings that are each more than a hundred years old. One of the buildings was constructed in 1898 for a visit from the Laos Royal Family. Each has been modernised to make this a luxurious and peaceful place to stay, but the restoration has kept this Laos hotel's historical charm intact.

To maintain its intimate feel, the 3 Nagas by Alila has just 17 rooms, individually furnished and decorated, featuring wooden beams and smooth wooden floors. Balconies look out over the lush green garden with its pentagonal pond where you can lie on a lounger and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

La Residence

Another of the Laos luxury hotels in this region is La Residence (Phou Vao), located just ten minutes from Luang Prabang's centre. It is decorated to reflect the country's culture, with an indoor water feature, as well as a lily pond in the garden. But the best feature of La Residence is this Laos hotel's amazing mountain views over the forest.

Places to Visit and Sites to See

Places to visit during your visit to Luang Prabang on your Laos holidays include the Royal Palace, the Kuang Si Falls and the Pak Ou Caves. Since the communist government deposed the royal family in the 1970s, The Royal Palace has been a museum for people on Laos holidays to explore.

The Kuang Si Falls are about 20 miles away from Luang Prabang, where you can see the pools and cascading water, taking in some nature before returning to your Laos hotel. It takes two hours to reach the Caves at Pak Ou by boat, during which time you can take in the atmosphere of the jungle. At the caves, holidaymakers can see hundreds of icons and figurines lining cave walls, another example of Laos's historical ties to the Buddhist tradition.

how much does it cost to travel around Asia? ?

I know obviously it depends on type of accommodation etc ... so basically, not including flights, but including accommodation (not backpacker hostels but perhaps homestays, cottages, small hotels etc) and food.... The trip is for about 5 months from KL to Phuket to Singapore to Bali to Bangkok, Cambodia, Laos and the Phillipines. I have been told that $1500 (Aust) per person, per month should be ok.....any help or comments really appreciated!

thanks!

If you are looking for budget accommodation, I'd recommend Khao San Road. it is good because it's a backpackers area,so the crowd is different, and the accommodations/businesses tend to be geared towards such travelers as well. It's close to the river, close to some of Bangkoks best sites (that take more than one day) and there's great markets and food around the area and the university near by. Boonsiri Place Hotel is really a convenient place to stay in Bangkok, not so noisy motobikes as in the other places, and about 10 minutes walk to the Grand Palace and 5 minutes to Kaosan Road. another point i want to say is that there is a 7/11 at the front floor, which is really convenient. http://www.discovery-thailand.com/Hotels%20Map%20Pages/Khaosan%20Hotels%20Map.html

Best drinks Available in Beijing

These can range in price, and some tea houses are really tourist traps whose main goal is to milk you of your money, so be careful. You can get a free tea demonstration at most Tenrenfu tea houses which are located throughout the city and at some malls. In Beijing, that is now leading the country's cultural revival, also remember that a tea can be sipped while watching martial arts and acrobatics. What the hell is this? Some teahouses have recently reappeared showing a variety of Beijing Opera and traditional shows and there you will be served delicious selections of tea and cakes too. Although Western influences have been embraced to transform traditional Chinese art forms into contemporary pieces, it's still possible to get a taste of some traditional theatre, such as story-telling to musical accompaniment, magic shows and acrobatics daily at the Lao She Chaguan, Da Wancha Building and at the Tianqiao Happy Teahouse.

Good coffee is hard to find in most parts of China, although addicts have a place to retreat now that Starbucks has at least 50 spots in the capital, most situated around shopping malls and in commercial districts of the city.

The most popular Chinese beer, which  is also quite good, is Qingdao. You can get it for 10-20 yuan or just 2-3 from a street vendor whilst the main beer brand of Beijing is Yanjing (10-15 yuan at restaurants, 2 yuan on the street).

Wine made in China are considered not drinkable by most foreigners, but it is also true that it's not their traditional drink. Just give them 10 years and they will come up with it too! If you really want to have some good wine, you can try Great Wall that is the most popular local brand, or get foreign products, such as those from the US, France, Italy, Australia, and Chile, but you will find them in more upper scale restaurants.

Looking for hard liquors? Try Bai jiu (white liquor) that comes in a large variety everywhere for very cheap prices and should be avoided if you want to have a clear mind for your visit on the next day. Mao Tai is one of the more famous brands but it is quite expensive.

If you wish to have a hint on what to eat and drink together, don't forget Beijing is famous for its Roast Duck. It is well served at many restaurants with thin pancakes, plum sauce and slivers of scallions and cucumbers. You dip the duck in the sauce and roll it up in the pancake with a few slivers of scallions and/or cucumbers. The end result is a mouth-watering combination of the cool crunchiness of the cucumber, the sharpness of the scallions, and the rich flavours of the duck. Well served with a cool Qingdao Beer! Beijing is also known for its lamb hotpot (shuàn yáng ròu), which is a funny cook-it-yourself affair in a steaming pot in the centre of the table featuring a savoury, non-spicy broth. To play it safe and satisfy everyone, you can request yunyáng for a pot divided down the middle, with spicy broth on one side and regular broth on the other.

On a last but useful note, keep in mind that during Olympic games everything is going to be much expensive from food to accommodation and comparable to western rates. Do not fear to haggle: is essential especially in touristy markets, shopping areas, etc. Example youth hostels that used to sell a bed night for 3 euros, now they sell it for 20-30 euros. So, what about International hotel chains?? Worse than worse.

But if you are looking for a typical still clean and affordable accommodation while in China's capital you can try to look for the following budget hotels, guest houses ( B&B or Bed and breakfast) and international youth hostels that kept decent prices.

Sa Pa Mountains, Lao Cai, Vietnam - Culture,Nature & Everything

Background Information
Sa Pa is located in the province of Lao Cai, Vietnam. Lao Cai is a mountainous region of Vietnam. Sa Pa is located at the Vietnam-China border. Sapa is known for its unique minority tribe such as the Hmong, Dao and Tay tribes. The Hmong people can be found at the mountainous region of China, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.
Best time to visit
The monsoon season is usually from November to April while the dry season is from May to October, where it is usually very warm and humid.During December and January, the weather can be pretty hard on tourists as most houses and hotels lack heating systems. The temperature could reach as low as 0°C when it rains. It usually gets very foggy during year end and early year periods. Going during the dry season is advisable as you do not want to risk having a foggy day in Sa Pa.
Budget
TheTravelManual Team paid $160USD for a 2 day tour in Halong Bay and a 3 day tour in Sapa Mountains. The tour package should include all accommodation, food and transport cost except your taxi ride back from Hanoi train station to you hotel. For miscellaneous food and buying of local handicraft costs, we recommend about $10USD.

Things to do

  • Trekking

When you are in Sapa Mountains, trekking is a must-do. They have different routes which takes you to different parts of Sapa. Each route has a view of its own both in terms of culture and nature. We spent the three days in Sa Pa trekking and I must say that what I saw while trekking in Sa Pa was one of the most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed in my travels. The Hmong people who were selling handicrafts actually followed us for kilometers, they were a friendly bunch and could speak simple English. You could also visit different tribes and observe different customary. Its seems as though the deeper in you walk the more majestic it gets. Its almost as though you begin to slip into another world. A world of beauty in simplicity. The memories I had in Sa Pa is something I will never forget in a long time.

  • Home Stay

When we went to Sa Pa Mountains during January, the temperature hit 0°C plus it was raining and everything was wet. So it pretty much scared away the tourists who intended to stay in the Home Stay of Sa Pa. We were crazy enough to go ahead with the plan and were the only tourists there, and we do not regret that decision we made. It's a great way to submerge youself in the great nature and culture of Sa Pa. Our balcony was actually overlooking terraces of plantations, greeneries and a stream. In the night we made ourselves a fire and just sitting around the fire in the great outdoors was a rewarding experience by itself.

Hello, we are 2 girls travelling for 6 months need some advice.?

We are 24 and travelling to Miami, Brazil, L.A, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Honalulu, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Laos, Mumbai then back to London. We have no clue what are the must-see's in these destinations, any feedback would be appreciated!

We are away for 6 months so any ideas how much we would spend? planning on staying mostly in Hostels and we want to party regularly.

Thanks!

Your question isn't really about travelling in Europe :)
I would ask multiple questions in different sections such as Unites States, LA, LV, Japan etc. Not in Europe.

How much would it be to backpack through these countries?

My friend and I are hoping to backpack in 2013 through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and end in Burma. We're hoping to do this for two months. We would mostly camp where possible and stay in cheap, small hotels. Roughly how much would this cost (without airfare or equipment cost)?

I know this is pretty vague and can vary, but an estimate would really help before we can start planning anything. Thanks!

Cambodia has cheap rooms a night for backpackers in Sianoukville the city has a beach i believe and alot of tourist, i know you need to apply for a visa ahead of time to go to vietnam. I have been to thailand twice but not for backpacking so i cant help you there.

Vietnam on a shoestring

With places to stay along the coastal highway like the historical city of Hue with its famous royal citadel, and Hoi An, a world heritage site that sparkles of an evening with countless lanterns seeing Vietnam from the north-south highway is a great way to go.

Lying on the beach costs nothing and there are plenty of people who are happy to stay in a heritage site like Hoi An and cycle each morning to the beach. Lunch can be had on the beach for no more than a dollar or two. Of an evening, a bowl of pho (beef or chicken noodle soup) and some beers are cheap.

If your priority is budget not comfort, accommodation in a bungalow in a town like Hoi An can be found for around US$5, but for around double that you can have a nice hotel room with air-conditioning and a fridge.

In Halong Bay, a group of tourists can rent a junk to visit the bay for several hours or several days. Halong Bay is a beautiful area with 1,969 limestone islands. Visitors to Halong Bay must purchase a ticket from the Halong Bay management department, which gives the option of following one of two routes: Thien Cung Grotto, Dau Go Cave and other sites (excluding Sung Sot Cave), and Sung Sot Cave and other sites (excluding Thien Cung Grotto and Dau Go Cave). Visitors often enjoy cruising overnight on Halong Bay so they can feel the whole stunning scenery.

Cycling is an interesting way to see the streets of Hanoi, with the slow moving traffic and interesting lakes. Once in the national capital, a number of very low budget accommodations can be found. They are not all hardcore backpacker hostels, either.

Hotel guestrooms in Vietnam are quite cheap so there is no need to take dormitory style accommodation to save money. On the contrary, a single or double room in a clean hotel will probably cost one or two dollars more than a bed in a dormitory holding 10 or more people.

A lot of backpackers choose Vietnam as their Southeast Asian destination. They recommend it for its lack of crowds and persistently low prices. Even though a boom in tourism started in the 1990s, the hectic scenes of Thailand have never eventuated in Vietnam. Vietnam has a similar vibe to Laos, but is a bit larger and offers a bit more diversity.

The beaches are superb, and some of the landscapes are amazing. Few people venture further north out of Hanoi but those who do discover the delights of the Sapa region and its fascinating hill tribe peoples. In general, all parts of Vietnam are full of friendly and outgoing people but the northern regions are particularly laid back and welcoming. Motorcycle tours are another popular backpacker choice. Rentals are available in HCM City and a lot of people head north rather than exploring the Mekong Delta to the south. Conditions are ideal for motorcycle touring with sealed roads and plenty of roadside mechanics.

Lunar New Year for Vietnam travel is a very busy period and really marks the height of the backpacker year here. Prices can be a little more at this time but there are still more than enough beds and rooms to go around. Some backpackers prefer to come to Vietnam toward the middle of the year but this may conflict with the wild weather of the wet season.

More true or false questions?

1.)Unlike the Republican convention, the Democratic convention in 1968 experienced no trouble.

2.)One of the important achievements of Richard Nixon was improved relations with both the Soviet Union and communist China.

3.)The Kent State shooting came during a protest after Nixon's bombing attacks on Cambodia and Laos in 1969-70.

4.)If Richard Nixon hadn't ordered the break-in at the Watergate hotel, the Democrats would have won the 1972 presidential election.

5.)South Vietnam fell to the communists within weeks of the withdrawal of American troops in 1973.

Richard Nixon was the first president to be impeached.
