Hoi An in the world top 10 tourist cities

The British travel magazine Wanderlust.co.uk / magazine has recently published the result of the top 10 tourist cities in the world. With 96% vote, Hoi An ancient town in Vietnam won 2nd place in the top 10 tourist cities in the world.

The ancient capital Luang Prabang (Laos) was ranked the first with 96.89% of the vote. Asia has three cities in the top 10, including two Japanese cities Kyoto (ranked 3) and Tokyo (ranked 6), Aleppo of Syria (ranked 10). The other cities are: Stockholm (Sweden), Perth (Australia), San Francisco (USA), Vienna (Austria) and Cusco (Peru).

Ancient town Hoi An located in the lower section of Thu Bon River, Quang Nam territory. At the 23rd session of 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have recognized Hoi An ancient town as a World Cultural Heritage. According to statistics, there are 1,360 relics and landscapes in Hoi An now. These relics are classified into 11 categories including 1,068 ancient houses, 19 pagodas, 43 temples, 23 communal houses, 38 churches, 5 assembly halls, 11 old wells, one bridge, 44 ancient tombs, more than 1,100 ancient relics in urban areas.

Hoi An is pedestrian-friendly: the Old Town is closed to cars and the distances from the hotels to the centre are walkable. It's a great place to hire a bike.

Known as Faifo to Western traders, from the 17th to 19th centuries it was one of Southeast Asia's major international ports. Vietnamese ships and sailors based here sailed all around Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
