Spirituality in Laos, The Pak Ou Caves

When traveling to Laos, there are many places and sights to see. But one of the most unique and interesting destinations has to be the Pak ou Caves.  Located near Luang Prabang you can hire a boat or songthaew to take you the 25 km down river.

Located directly on the Mekong River, the Pak Ou Caves are one of the most sacred sights in the country. They are actually still used as a place of worship. Every New Year people from Luang Prabang make a pilgrimage to visit the caves containing over 4000 Buddha images and statues.

The caves contain mostly the traditional tall standing Luang Prabang Buddha statues, but you can find Buddhas of all shapes and sizes.  As you approach the caves from the opposite side of the river, an incredible view unfolds. High limestone cliffs jut above the banks with a black hole cut into its side. As you come closer, you will see the white stairs leading to the upper chamber and know that you are about to witness something magical.

You can take the stairs to two different Chambers. The higher chamber Tham Pheung houses more of the buddhas than the lower cave Tham Thing. They are both impressive, however more light is let into Tham Thing. If you plan on visiting the caves, bring along a headlamp. It can be quite dark and it helps to see the statues better.

While the caves make for a great day trip from Luang Prabang, there are many things that you can do in town. The city is beautiful and there is no better way to see it than by bicycle.

A World Heritage Sight, Luang Prabang is not to be missed. As you ride your bicycle from temple to temple, be sure not to miss Haw Kham, the former royal palace. The bright colours of the temples are a treat to the eyes against the lush green vegetation. The inside of the temples are as impressive as the outside containing Buddha images, tapestries, jewels and artifacts.

There is no shortage of food in Luang Prabang. From traditional Lao meals to coffee and pastry shops. You will never go hungry or tire of the choices.  And after you have rejuvenated from a hearty lunch, you are ready to explore more of the sights, like a working Monastery. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a group of monks practicing their drums.

While in Luang Prabang, you must walk the steep hill to Phou Si. It has a spectacular panoramic view of the area and the sunset is certainly one of the most beautiful you will ever see.

Luang Prabang has a famous night market. Pick up all of your trinkets and souvenirs here. Be ready to barter hard though because it is definitely over priced. Restaurants line the streets and you will have no problem finding any food that you are craving to fit your budget.

Laos is a wonderful country to visit and you should make it top on your list before it is discovered by the rest of the world and overrun with tourists.

Teaching European Languages In Asia

Teaching languages as a foreigner in Asia is really popular these days. Many backpackers from Europe really fall in love with Asia and ends up spending many years there, often doing jobs like language teaching. There is something special with Asia that makes you really not want to go back to work in boring Europe or the US again.



Anyways, most of these young backpackers end up becoming English teachers. There are several countries in Asia that you can teach English in, Thailand, Korea and Japan being the most common. I have also met people teaching English in Cambodia, Laos and Singapore on my travels in Asia however, and almost all of them seem to enjoy their job. There is a high demand for English teachers in Asia as it is often very hard to find local people that speak English well enough to be able to teach it.



The only bad thing with being an English teacher in most Asian countries is the salary. Countries like Thailand, Cambodia and Laos are really cheap to live in, but that is of course also reflected in the salaries. Like I said, being an English teacher is quite popular these days, so the language schools don not have to give high salaraies to attract people to work for them. The salary is still quite good in Korea and Japan though, but again these countries are more expensive to live in.



Something that I would suggest is to look into teaching other languages than English. Often the slaray will be quite a bit higher if you're teaching another language, as it is quite hard for language schools to find teachers qualified to teach other languages. There is a big market for the large languages like Spanish, German and French, and even speaking these languages as your second language chances are you can get a job.



Also when it comes to smaller languages there might be a market for teaching it somewhere in Asia. Take a country like Philippines, they speak good English there so there is not much of a market for that, but when it comes to other languages, even small ones like Norwegian and Swedish, there is a market. The reason is that it is very common for Filipinos to work abroad, both on ships and in different countries all over the world, and foreign companies prefer that they speak some of the local language then.



I have myself had the experience to teach languages in Manila, which was a very rewarding and interesting experience. There was a wide range of different students, my youngest 16 and my oldest close to 40 years old. Most of my students were planning to go abroad to work in the near future, and some just wanted to learn the language as they had relatives from my country.

Culturally are Asians more similar to Hispanics or to White people?

One of my best friends is Asian (Laotian) and we have a lot of similarities between us: strict parents who value education, hard work ethic, we're close to our family, not just our parents, but also our cousins and aunt and uncles, and other things that I can't think of right now.

But my sociology teacher says that Asians and whites are more similar in their culture.

I'm not trying to generalize and say that all Asians and Latinos are this way, cuz I know they are not, but in general.

What do you think?
Yeah, I guess it's true that a lot of whites are like that too. Sorry, if I offended anyone because that probably would have offended me if I read that somwhere and they said only the races except mine had those characteristics.

Comparing cultures is not always the most knowledgeable thing to do. After all, we all change over time and although most of us keep tradition, we all end up conforming to one another in many different ways. You live with someone long enough, you're going to develop some of the same traits as that person. Through technology and the "information age" that we are in, all of our cultures are starting to get extremely combined to where comparing wouldn't be accurate at this point. We even celebrate each others' holidays, eat each others' food, speak each others' languages, and even adopt each others' decorating techniques. But saying that asians are more like whites than hispanics is like saying butterflies are more like cougars than turtles. It just doesn't work. We are all people, we are all alike and different in many different ways. And it's wonderful.

What Taoism supplies are typically used in practices?

I don't know why, I've searched all over the web and I cannot find what materials are used in taoist rituals. I speculate that the reason has to do with material possessions being unnecessary. However it would help me to get into the mind set if I had some materials in my area of meditation. Are their specific candles or other objects that are directly influenced by Lao Tzu and others in taoism? Please if you are a noob like me don't just post the Yin-Yang symbol as an answer, thank you.

Ehh. I'm not sure there's anything "wrong" with it, but it could be improved.

However, some people would object to certain things on it. First off, "White" and "Black" aren't really races. They're common terms that are mistaken as the term for a race -- but the correct terms are Caucasian and African American.

Also, I find it interesting that, while the majority of the list seens to have been placed in random order, "White" STILL comes first -- it always seems to, even though they never really appear to care about the order of the others.
