Cambodia Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Report Q4 2010

Browse all : Pharmaceuticals Market

In our Q410 Pharmaceutical Business Environment Ratings, Cambodia is last of the 17 pharmaceutical markets surveyed in the Asia Pacific region, with its situation unlikely to improve in the coming months. Transparency International rates the country as the fourth most corrupt in Asia, with only Laos, Myanmar and Afghanistan faring worse. Failure to address these structural issues will bode poorly for long-term growth and development.

Additionally, Minister of Commerce Cham Prasidh said on August 24 2010 that the government's decision to introduce competition laws in Cambodia has been deferred. He said the government will wait until 2011 to consider whether to implement the legislation, although a finalised draft version has been completed. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)'s member states have been given until 2015 to comply with regional guidelines on competition policy. We are concerned that failure to meet the deadline may deter foreign companies from expanding in Cambodia as they await the finalisation of the competition laws.

In positive news, a US$5.9bn action plan that covers the development of physical infrastructure and trade facilitation in five Mekong countries (Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar) was approved in August. Cham Prasidh said on August 26 that Cambodia and Laos may get the most financing support for infrastructure development when the countries start implementing the plan in October. We believe the plan will lead to a significant increase in trade between the Mekong countries over the coming years and speed up economic development in Cambodia.

A decade of economic growth and political stability has allowed Cambodia to begin to tackle its underdeveloped healthcare system. Measures such as health equity funds, a new social health insurance system and the use of nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) have begun to reduce inequalities in the system. The public health budget has grown in line with economic growth. However, per capita health expenditure remains low and around 60% of healthcare costs are paid out-of-pocket.

Cambodia's pharmaceutical market was calculated to be worth KHR711bn (US$172mn) in 2009. In 2010, we calculate that pharmaceutical expenditure will reach a value of KHR815bn (US$194mn). BMI forecasts drug consumption to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.8% in local currency terms and 11.04% in US dollar terms over the next five years to reach a value of KHR1,185bn (US$291mn) in 2014. Our long-range forecast is for the market to reach KHR1,901bn (US$475mn) in 2019, equivalent to a CAGR of 10.3% in local currency terms and 10.7% in US dollar terms over the 10- year period.

Lao Travel Planning Tips

  • Planning a trip to Laos? You might have gathered most of information you need to make your travel plan. At this point you might either be exhausted or over whelming by the wealth information available on the internet.
Don't worry, a careful planning will help smoothing your travel. Here are some tips to keep in mind when planning a trip to Laos.

  • Plan your itinerary carefully. If you plan to go to other countries in the region before or after Laos (e.g Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam), at least determine where to go first, next and last plus the entry/exit points in Laos. It's important to have a clear plan to avoid doubling back that can eat up your time and money.
If you need to get a Lao entry visa, decide where and how to get it. Tourist visas are now valid for 30 days. Here are two ways to get the Lao visa:
    - Arrange it with the Lao Embassy. If there is no Lao embassy in your country, you might need to get it in one of Laos's neighboring countries (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and China). Allow plenty of time if you chose this option.
    - Get it at Lao border or airport. Tourist visa is available at most Lao ports of entry. Visa fee ranges from US$20 (China) to US$42 (Canada). Have the exact amount of money and 2 passport photos ready for that.
Please note that not everyone is eligible for Lao visa-on-arrival, you better check to make sure you aren't in the list of "not entitle" nationalities.

  • Get your passport ready. Make sure your passport is not expiring within the next six months otherwise your application will be rejected. It can even be worse if you plan to get a Lao visa-on-arrival, and arrive at a Lao border or Airport only to find that you're not allowed to enter the county because of your expiring passport.

  • If you consider taking anti-malarial drugs. Keep in mind that you might have awful reactions to anti-malarial. It's best to consult your doctor.

  • Sort out your traveler check or credit card(s) for use in Laos. Take some cash as well. Small notes helps save hassles when it comes to buying things on the go like bottled water and snacks.

  • Book/buy your tickets early. Book your ticket as soon as you have a clear plan.  You can save good amount of money by purchasing your ticket early. If possible stay with the same airline during your entire trip to receive round-trip or connecting fare discounts.

  • If you're on medication ask your doctor for your prescribed medicine. Take enough for the period of your travel. It's a good practice to keep them in their original packages (in case you have to declare at the airport security checkpoint). Putting them in your carry-on bag to ensure that you have your medicine whenever you need.

Cambodia And Laos Tours

cambodia and laos tours="cambodia and laos tours"
Best Southeast Asia tours or advice?

I am interested in Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, ect. Has anyone went on a tour or just by themselves and had a positive experience. What was the tour name? I would like to embrace the culture and eat and live like them. I don't want to stay at the Hilton and eat McDonald's. What are the must see places? Any advice or knowledge you have is appreciated.

For Cambodia and Laos - the advice is - organize it all by yourself. These countries are easy to do-it yourself. There are plenty cheap and decent guesthouses and I have not seen any McDonalds there. Make your bookings via Internet. In Cambodia you get a visa-on-arrival at the airport ($20). I guess it's the same but $35 in Laos (not sure, I don't need a visa to Laos myself).

Must-see places in Cambodia - Angkor temples!!!!!! in Siem Reap.
In Laos - Luang Prabang town and around. In fact, Laos is for trekkers, nature lovers etc.

Cambodia sets its eyes on the south coast

CAMBODIA - With tourist arrivals in Cambodia approaching the 3 million mark, the country is seeking to diversify its tourism offer. As Siem Reap and the nearby Angkor temples reach saturation, the Cambodian Government is turning its eyes to the 400-kilometre coast along the Gulf of Siam.

The area receives only 162,000 international tourists a year, a mere 5% of all arrivals in the country (and compared to 44% for Siem Reap). The coast has some 60 hotels with almost 3,000 rooms, the majority of them in the coastal city of Sihanoukville (45 hotels with 1,945 rooms). Only a few of them offer world-class standards: Cambodia's Sokha Group is present with the Sokha Beach Resort, a five-star resort, while the Independence Hotel, inaugurated in 1963, reopened two years ago as a four-star property.

However, more luxury and first-class properties are to come. The Royal Group Cambodia has recently revealed its ambition to build Asia's 'first environmentally planned resort island', pioneering high-end international tourism on the country's idyllic coastline. The vision is to develop the pristine island of Koh Rong ‑ a 30-minute boat ride from the coastal city of Sihanoukville ‑ into an ecologically sustainable resort paradise rivalling established Asian resort Islands such as Bali and Phuket.

The Sokha Group is involved in two major resort developments, the Sokha O'Chheuteal beach and casino in Sihanoukville and the Sokha Bokor Resort. Both are scheduled to open in 2012. A Japanese project is also taking shape in Sihanoukville with residence apartments and a hotel. The Song Saa resort, an exclusive 25-villa property will open by the end of the year on an island off Sihanoukville. And in Ream, Accor has signed for a M-Gallery property by 2013.

The crucial problem for the coast is the lack of air access. There are still no regular flights to Sihanoukville and in the short term Cambodia's national airline Cambodia Angkor Air can only promise charter flights …
