What should I see or do in Laos?

In October I'll be there for two weeks with my girlfriend. We like to find our own places and do our own exploring. But I don't want to miss out on your gems of information if you've been there before. I like pretty much everything - beaches, countryside, mountains, food, nightclubs, sport, festivals, history and 'culture.' Any tips? Thanks :]

Hmm you should know that Laos is landlocked, thus there's no beaches.

Naga Fireball: Very interesting and amazing, the red-orange light just pop out of Mekong River from nowhere...

Travelling from Thailand to Laos?

Hi Guys,
Is there any way to get from Chiang Mai to Laos by bus or train? I want to make my own way from Chiang Mai through Laos and Cambodia and end up in Vietnam. Anyone have any idea or information or know of websites with good information on any of these places.Thanks

There are buses between Chiang Mai and Nong Khai. I haven't done that route personally. I flew into Luang Prabang from Bangkok.

There aren't direct Chiang Mai - Nong Khai trains. Getting to Nong Khai would involve a change of trains south of Chiang Mai on the northern line, to catch a Bangkok - Nong Khai northeast bound train.

From Nong Khai bus station, a tuktuk to the Friendship Bridge, immigration, into Laos. Bus to Vientiane.

There's another crossing from Mukdahan on the Thai side, to Savannakhet.
