Top five spookiest stories from Great Hotels of the World

Bumps in the night, creaky doors, we've all heard tales of ghostly ghouls and spooky spirits lurking in the corridors of hotels, but are any of them really true? Great Hotels of the World reveals five spine-tingling stories from hotels around the world. So be prepared for a chilling read and an uncomfortable night's sleep tonight… don't say we didn't warn you!

  1. The Jetwing Lighthouse is located in the Sri Lankan city of Galle. Located just two km from the hotel is a famous old Dutch fort – one of the typical tourist attractions of the city. The fort has a garden that used to belong to the old governor of Galle and you can still find the first fruit tree that was planted by the Dutch. Legend has it that if you climb the tree and pick the fruits with the intention of selling them to make a quick buck, you may climb the tree but you will never come down. All so far except one lucky soul who has climbed the tree to pick the fruit have fallen out of the tree and died…. spooky!

  2. At this hotel in Rome, Italy, the hotel staff speak openly of a young girl who fell down some steps and died in the early 1900's. Many guests travel from far and wide to stay in the hotel to try and catch a glimpse of the ghost. Rumour has it that the little girl can be seen sitting at the top of the stairs playing with marbles, but it seems strange that it's only ever women who have seen her…

  3. In this hotel in Barcelona, Spain, a guest complained that her room (room 205) was cold – unusual for a summers day in Spain. So the general manager visited her room to check the air conditioning. The air conditioning was fine, so he apologised to the guest and assumed that the problem had been rectified.  That night, the woman awoke shivering to a room so cold she could see her own breath. Understandably angry, the woman called down to reception to complain. The reception staff apologised again and explained that the air conditioning system must have broken and moved her to a suite. So the woman enjoyed the rest of her stay with no problems. However what the hotel staff didn't tell the woman was that they often get this complaint from guests in room 205, ever since a death in the hotel room over 50 years ago.

  4. A guest at this hotel in London, United Kingdom was spooked by a ghostly apparition in her room one night. She reported it to reception and they said that someone had died in that room around 50 years ago. The woman was spooked by her ordeal but left the hotel trying to forget about the incident…. Until a few weeks later when strange things started to happen. Opening a drawer in her kitchen one day, she found a packet of matches from the hotel. But she hadn't brought them home with her, she doesn't smoke and doesn't use candles – how did they get there? A few weeks after that, she was eating in a restaurant and at her place was a napkin with the hotel logo on it.

  5. A guest at this hotel in Lisbon, Portugal came to reception and told them that she had just been comforting a young girl who she found sitting on a chair on one of the corridors crying. The girl was talking in Portuguese so the woman couldn't understand what she was saying but she appeared to be on her own. The woman asked if a member of staff could go and help the girl and find out why she was on her own and crying. The hotel staff dutifully agreed. But they've been told about this little girl many times before and whenever they go to check, no-one is there.
