The festival lasts for a couple of days from 23rd March to 3rd April, where the people gather and celebrate the festival in honour of Thao Suranaree. Legend has it that Thao Suranaree, the wife of the assistant governor of Nakhon Ratchasima, helped fight against invaders by rallying up the villagers to fight for their land. Headed by Prince Anu of Lao, the invaders of Laotian troops imprisoned the villagers, including Thao Suranaree. Spurred by her plans to get the soldiers drunk by using the charm of the female prisoners, the women slipped away in the middle of night. Released, they set out to free the male prisoners who attacked and killed all the drunken troops.
Known as Khun Ying Mo at the time, she fought against captivity and took a stance to help her people. Inspired by her bravery, King Rama III honoured her with the popular name that most locals use presently, Thao Suranaree. The fair, in dedication to her is celebrated with colourful parades, firework displays, cultural exhibitions and beauty pageants.
