Best Methods for Finding Good Deals on Hotel Reservations

What is the best method for making hotel reservations? It used to be much simpler, when your only options were calling a hotel directly or contacting a travel agent.

Although it can get very confusing, there are plenty of different ways to make reservations. How do you know you are making the best reservations for your money? In this article, we are going to discuss a few dependable ways to make hotel reservations that will guarantee that you are getting your money's worth.

When it comes to making hotel reservations, the price you are going to pay and the availability of rooms will depend a great deal on when you are traveling. Traveling to popular destinations is easier if you book your room well in advance. When thinking about traveling to a particular spot you'll want to avoid any special event that might be happening when you want to travel. If you have time to plan you can save money by traveling during the less popular times. If you are always staying in hotels, you can keep a little money in your pocket by asking for a hotel issued credit card or start using the reward program from your present credit card. Just like you can collect miles that can be applied to airfare, you can use reward points that can be applied to hotel reservations. By doing this you will reduce your hotel bill each time that you use your credit card. If you collect enough points, you might be able to get a free hotel room once in a while. This is a way for people who travel a lot to not spend as much money.

It may also be a good thing to ask relatives, friends and others if they can recommend a good hotel in your area of interest. You probably won ever know if someone hated or really enjoyed themselves at a specific hotel. A great deal of the time, you can learn a lot of helpful info about a certain hotel chain even if this person vacationed in another city of that hotel's chain. The point is that the people you know can provide more factual information than the ads and promotions can give.

These days, there are a lot of ways to reserve a hotel room.

Wherever and whenever you plan to travel, you should do a little research and not book the first hotel or package you see advertised. Very often you can do quite a bit better by doing some comparison shopping. In addition, you must do things based upon the type of hotel you like and the amount of money you want to pay for it. Keep the above tips in mind when you make your hotel reservations, and don't be in too much of a hurry.

Vietnam's capital, Hanoi will be 1000 year on 10th October 2010

Non Fiction

Weird and WOW – HANOI

By Christina Minamizawa

Published on Lulu.com http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/Minamizawa

Weird and WOW – Hanoi celebrates the 1000 year epic journey of Hanoi, Vietnam. Within the 360 page full color book reveals the true cultural heritage and essence of the Vietnamese people like you have never seen in publications before.

Writer and photographer, Christina Minamizawa is a well travelled Kiwi Gal, hailing from small towns in the South Island of New Zealand.  From her remote beginning this long term traveler grew her wings early on, travelling to 25 countries, and living in 5.

Married to an Asian, she loves Asia and has called it her home for 13 years; she loves the diversity and similarities that other cultures offer.

Always interested in what's happening in the back streets of every destination; seeing how people live has always been No.1 on her itinerary.  Everywhere she goes she finds weird stuff, but knows if we can get over that there is a huge WOW waiting for us.

Her original concept was 1000 years - 1000 photos, but once she started, it was hard to stop.  Believe it or not, 1,700 photos are in this book; her works makes cultural diversity seem like we are all the same-same-but-different.  Much is revealed, wrapped with humor, facts and figures you will leave with a deep understanding for this ancient culture.

While Christina lived in Hanoi for 3 years, many of these photos were taken off her motorbike, one of 3 bikes she has ridden on, in her 10 years in Hanoi and Bangkok.  Some people think the traffic is crazy there, and she must be crazy to ride in it; but it suits her personality well.

This book celebrates this auspicious occasion with the world as her book is released on the 10th of the 10th month (October) in 2010 while Hanoi celebrates its 1000 year anniversary.

Aimed at revealing culture to the reader, this is a visual feast for everyone.

This is the beginning of a Capital City Series, so watch this space as you are in for a treat!

Laos Tourist

laos tourist_3="laos tourist"
Do Thai like foreign tourists or do they despise them?

I understand from a few travellers, farang married to Thais and also from my own experiences that Thai only tolerate foreigners because of the tourist dollar they bring.

The Thais have a number of nasty phrases in their own language about foreigners.

When I am in Thailand I really dont feel welcome as I do in China, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia

In my experience it is a lot more difficult to get along with other nationalities. Thai people will leave you be and are very tolerant.

I am sure there is a bad apple in every basket.

You will always be a farang -foreigner- in Thailand. You always will be called farang where ever you go and if this bothers you, Thailand may not be such a Paradise for you. It is not meant to insult you but it's deeply engrained in the way Thai people refer to white people.

Thai people must be the most sociable nation on the planet. They are extremely friendly in particular in areas with few tourists. A smile from another person is always replied to with a smile. If they seem unsure about you it is probably because they are shy....a smile usually takes care of it and will be replied with a smile.

Paradise Found in Vietnam

The Mekong Delta

A new experience this year is taking a river barge cruise on Song Xanh and discovering floating market, enjoying exotic food and meeting friendly people. Tourists can travel upstream to Mekong River, cruise on a "rustic sampan" (a customised, luxury version) on the mighty Mekong River. It's a great escape from Saigon.

You can choose from one, two or three night packages for $265 to $427 per person. Experience an exclusive trip on the Mekong Delta with an unforgettable candlelight dinner and overnight stay on boat. The tour departs Ho Chi Minh City to Cai Be floating market, Vinh Long and Sa Dec, down beautiful canals through water jacinth plantations and past French style villas and Chinese temples.

During the cruise, fresh cotton towels, exotic seasonal fruits, hot green tea and two bottles of mineral water will be served daily free of charge. Tour prices include all private transportation and transfers, on-board English or French speaking guides, daily breakfast, full board meals as indicated in the itinerary, bicycle rental and rowing, admission fees and permits where applicable.

Sapa and Bac Ha Market.

Now tourists can book a helicopter tour from Hanoi to Bac Ha just to see the weekend market! If you have more time, you can take the overnight train to Lao Cai then travel onto Bac Ha and visit Can Cau market on Saturday then Bac Ha Market on Sunday.

Sapa is a must-see destination to bring home unique handicrafts, post card pictures and experiences and memories of a lifetime. It takes at least five days to make a perfect tour to the northern hill tribes and markets. In Vietnamese culture, the market place is an important meeting gathering point, not simply as a place for trading. This concept has always remained with Vietnamese culture. There is not one child who does not want his or her mother to take him or her to the market.

Why? Because many people live in remote areas and work hard in the fields or elsewhere to make a living. People have few opportunities to meet friends, relatives or neighbours. So a market is a great place to fulfil those needs. There is always a lot of excitement and joy associated with the market place environment. The trips will introduce the most colourful markets of hill tribes living in North Vietnam.

You will encounter many interesting people, and visit their villages that are located at the foot of Vietnam's highest mountain, Mount Fansipan. Tour costs from $70 to $938 per person, including all transportation and transfers, English or French speaking guide, accommodation shared in twin/double room with daily breakfast, all entrance fees, meals as stated in the tour programme, taxes and service charges.

Con Dao Island

As a former prison island, Con Dao was hell in the past, but now it's paradise for travellers.

The Six Senses Con Dao has just opened its doors for luxury travellers. Sun, sand, sea, sounds, seafood and sightseeing… all you need for a dream vacation you can find here.

Resting in the quiet waters of the Eastern Sea, the Con Dao archipelago remains a little-known gem, 180km off the coast of Southeast Vietnam.

Swathes of white sand form breeding grounds for turtles and visiting dugong herds, while the inland teems with bird life and the chatter of monkeys and squirrels.

Six Senses has chosen Con Son Island as the location of its next Hideaway resort for this unspoilt beauty and ecological opportunities. The island covers an area of 70sqkm with 5,000 inhabitants. The pristine Dat Doc beach lies 8km from Con Son Airport, in a national park encompassing both marine and terrestrial resources.

The caress of a warm sea breeze, an exotic fruit cocktail by your side and the lulling sound of waves on the shoreline: barefoot tourism has brought new demands for impeccable standards in exotic, far flung destinations, standards that Evason Hideaway resorts can deliver.

Con Dao will be the sixth Evason Hideaway resort, the boutique category of the luxury Evason brand. Each Hideaway combines the intrinsic values of the destination with the height of luxurious, contemporary lifestyle.

Con Dao will take the usual Evason eco-friendly philosophy a few footsteps further, and lead a new style of environmentally sustainable resort, from construction materials to energy-saving wizardry.

Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park

If you'd like to discover caves, a beautiful national park, and stay on the beach, you can take a tour to Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park and stay at the stunning Sun Spa Resort in Quang Binh province.

Vietnam Airlines offers flights from Hanoi and Saigon. This destination is easily accessed from Hue, Danang or even Hanoi by car. The best time to come is in the summer time but book in advance as that is also peak season for Vietnamese holiday makers.

Phu Yen

Vietnam Airlines offers daily flights from Saigon and Hanoi to Phu Yen, making this beach destination much more accessible. Hideaway Bai Tram is the perfect resort for relaxing and unwinding with seven unique private pool villas, nestled on a 90 hectare plot in an isolated and secluded bay with a 900m-long private white sand beach.

Located on the coast just south of Qui Nhon by a 45 minutes drive from Qui Nhon airport and is reached by a scenic drive from Nha Trang, Phu Yen is highlighted with almost-untouched natural beauties and attractions. Especially, Phu Yen is celebrating the National Tourism Year 2011 so there are many activities. Come and experience for yourself!

Please read this Isaan/Laos sign for me!! (in Thailand)?

I have a photo of a restaurant that I went to in Thailand. I want to label it correctly, but the sign is only written in Isaan/Laos script. Would someone who can read please tell me the romanized version of the name?

Le Laos

Chinese For Beginner

-You need to find a motive why you want to learn Chinese, and how long, how often you speak Chinese? E.g. : My colleague wanted to be a part time translator so he signed up for a Chinese course. My student had a Chinese girl friend and wanted to communicate with her and her parent in Asia. It all depends what motivates you to learn Chinese and always remember your motive.

- Use 20 minutes a day, to learn new words and practice the previous chapter, pronounce it out loud so you'll remember them.

- Find a local group, or friends who are able to speak Chinese, go out with them more often and learn from them. You need a partner so you can improve your oral skills.

- Learn to speak and understand Chinese is easy, but writing and pronounce it accurately would be the harder part. You can find some useful materials at links or resource box below.

- There's no faster way to master Chinese Language, because it has totally no connection with French, Italian or Spanish. There are more than 3000 chinese character and each has its own meaning. Combining 2 character will form another meaning. Using some Chinese Language software is a way to master Chinese Language. But no matter how, practise makes perfect!

The fastest ways to learn Chinese, Speak Chinese are

We did a research and found out the best results would be as follow :-

- 1. Study on board. Go China and sign up a 6 months course. You'll basically learn how to speak Chinese, how to read Chinese, understand it and use them in a correct way. This is a costly method, 6 months including accommodation + course fees + air ticket.

- 2. Buy a Chinese language software. There are lots of Chinese Language software that you can purchase online today, this software is great, especially if you are busy and unable to attend course, classes. But it's quite limited unless you got some Chinese friends to practice with. Not that costly, most probably would be less than USD300.

- 3. Attend Chinese classes. This will be a substitute of Choice No 1, except you are doing it at your own country. Go to China town and I believe you can find one easily. But in long run, this is costly, it might takes you years to complete. Some Chinese teachers are quite boring because they tend to repeat the same chapter again and again J

We still recommend either Choice 1, or 2. Faster and more guaranteed. Choice 3, hmmm, depending how good the Chinese teachers are, you can ask around those friends who've successfully learn Chinese, ask them to recommend you the place.

Here's some basic conversation for you, so at least you know how to speak Chinese.

Normal Conversation

How to pronounce.

Peter: Hi, How are you?

Peter: Hi, Ni Hao Ma?

Jane: Hi, I'm fine, thanks, How are you?

Peter: This course is great!

Peter: Zhe Ge Ker Cheng Tai Hao Le!

Jane: Had your lunch already?

Jane: Ni Wu Chan Chi Le Ma?

Peter: Not yet, you?

Peter: Hai Mei, Ni Ner?

Jane: Not yet, why not let's grab a lunch together?

Jane: Hai Mei, Na Wo Men Yi Qi Qu Chi Wu Chan Hao Ma?

Peter: Sure, let's have Mcdonald Fast Food.

PeteR: Hao Ah, Wo Men Chi Mai Dang Lao Kuai Chan Ba.

Jane: Good idea!

Jane: Hao Zhu Yi!

After Lunch ...

Wu Chang Hou ...

Peter: I think it's time we need to head back to our course.

Peter: Wo Jue Der Si Shi Hou Wo Men Yao Hui Qu Shang Ke Cheng Le.

Jane: Ya, it was a great conversation and nice meeting you.

Jane: Shi, Tai Duo Hao Tan Le, Heng Gao Xing Ren Shi Ni.

Peter: Ya, nice meeting you too, can I have your number so we can meet up in future?

Peter: O, Hen Gao Xing Ren Shi Ni, Wo Ke Yi Xun Wen Ni De Dian Hua Hao Ma Yi Fang Bian Lian Luo Ma?

Jane: Ok, bye!

Jane: Hao, Zai Jian!

The Above conversation is translated from Up to down English to Chinese, and with pronunciation below the Chinese word. The pronunciation is not Han Yu Ping Ying(HYPY). HYPY is the correct way of pronouncing Chinese word, it has 26 of them.

Hostels In Laos

hostels in laos_3="hostels in laos"
How expensive is traveling in China?

I am in the middle of a backpacking trip with my boyfriend. We have been to India for a couple of months, then Thailand for 6 weeks and we are now in Cambodia. The plan was to travel through Vietnam and Laos before heading off to work in Australia. But now I am wondering how feasible it would be for us to visit China too considering our budget is around $20 per day (for both of us).

Does any one know how easy it is to travel in China on a tight budget?
I am wondering how cheap are the cheapest guesthouses/hostels, restaurants/street stalls? And how expensive are bus and train journeys?

Also is it possible to get a visa for china in Vietnam?

Thanks!

Why China? Lol. Choose a European country
