What's the best way to go to Chiang Mai from Guangzhou?
- via Hainan + ship + Danang + ? (overland through Vietnam to Laos etc)
OR
via Kunming + air + Chiang Mai
You'll only find flights from Bangkok to Guangzhou or from Hanoi to Guangzhou. I think it's tough to get an international flight out of Chiang Mai. If you travel through Vietnam by land, you'll need to get a visa anyway which is available in Bangkok.
I recommed taking an overnight train from Chiang Mai to BKK. Then buy a ticket from a travel agent on Khao San Road to Guangzhou for a day or two later. Bangkok is one of the cheapest places in the world to buy airline tickets. I was able to buy a ticket from Bangkok to Beijing the same day the flight departed for very little money.
