China Tour-Wuhan Travel Guide

Situated at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Hanshui River, Wuhan is an amalgamation of three smaller cities consisting of Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang. Covering an area of 8,400 square kilometers, Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province with a population of 6.8 million. It is the largest industrial and commercial center of central China and strategically important both in land and water transportation.

Geographically it is low and flat in the middle and hilly in the south, crisscrossing with rivers and streams along with numerous lakes and ports. Lying in a sub-tropical monsoon climate zone, Wuhan has distinct four seasons with an annual average temperature of 16.8 centigrade and an annual average rainfall of 1093.3 millimeters. Wuhan is recognized as one of China's "Three Furnaces" (the other two being Nanjing and Chongqing), with an average temperatures of 32 degrees Centigrade in June, July and August.

The history of Wuhan can date back 3,500 years ago. In the period of the Warring States (770 B.C. - 221 B.C.), this area was the land of the State of Chu and the brilliant Chu culture can be found everywhere in Wuhan today. In the Han Dynasty, Hanyang had been a fairly busy port. In the 3rd century AD, walls were built to protect Hanyang and Wuchang cities, which marked the establishment of Wuhan City. In the Qing Dynasty, Hankou, one of the three small cities in Wuhan was reputed to be 'one of the four famous trading towns' in China. In the late 1800's, railroads were extended on a north-south axis through Wuhan city, which then became an important transshipment point between rail and river traffic. Wuhan is also the birthplace of the Chinese democratic revolution. In 1911, the Xinhai Revolution rose up in Wuchang and the last feudalistic dynasty- the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was overthrown.

Known as the "Homeland of White Clouds and Yellow Crane" in the history of China, Wuhan has many famous historical remains and cultural relics. One of the highlights is the Yellow Crane Tower which is reputed as one of the top five ancient towers in China. Originally built in 223 AD during the Three Kingdoms Period, the Yellow Crane Tower suffered several damages in the history. The present one was reconstructed in 1981 on the original site by imitation of ancient architecture style. Standing on the top of the tower, you can get a grand view of Yangtze River. Through the centuries the Yellow Crane Tower has inspired many poets, among whom Cui Hao from the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD) wrote the most famous poem describing this tower.   Wuhan is also a city with magnificent natural sceneries. Wuhan Tour can take you to visit the largest in-city lake, the East Lake covers an area of 33 square kilometers, roughly 6 times that of the eponymous West Lake in Hangzhou.

If you want to have a taste of Wuhan local snacks when you take the Wuhan travel the JiQing Night Street and Xiang Ba Lao Food Street are highly recommended, where you can try the variety of local snacks including Hot and Dry Noodles (Re Gan Mian), Steamed Soup Bun (Tang Bao), Fried Bean Sheets (Dou Pi), etc. For people who would like to go shopping in Wuhan, Hanzheng Street and the Jianghan Business Street both enjoy the high reputation in China.
