Apply the lower price of the room to Hotel Jesolo not enough
There will be resumed in 2010? Difficult to have an answer. None of futurists, economists and politicians to respond. And 'though useful to review what the missteps are not repeated. We have therefore asked the manager of a small but well established Hotel Jesolo Villa Roberta a Bad & Breakfast in the province of Venice, what should be the right attitude to face a future that looks unmanageable. Luvisotto Walter, 46, a baccalaureate scientific manages the Bad & Breakfast Hotel Villa Roberta Jesolo since 2003. Mr. Luvisotto, a common myth that the lowest price always wins ... True .... In reality, the customer does not want the lowest price it wants a higher value. Imagine that a customer encounters the price of a cup of coffee € 2.50. Or facing a price a hotel room € 140,00 (when the standard required for that category is € 80-100). Mechanism "odious" that shows little understanding of the mechanisms that regulate the mode of application of the price. What decisions should take a hotel management to win the "race" that secures the best price? Of all the decisions a manager must take the hotel during the start-up business hotel, that relating to "fix" the price often causes considerable anxiety. At first sight, "applying the price" is not just a numbers game. Develop a total gross account that allows to collect a reasonable profit after covering the costs of the method can be quite simple to follow. "Fix" a price is more an art than science, math. The psychology of the host is an important factor. Eventually "fix" the price means thinking about everything that the guest wishes to pay for the room and the services it includes. In most cases, the "right price" is a matter for the perception of it by the customer. And his fellow hoteliers Jesolo what they think? The answer I received most often was, to paraphrase one of the many "operators to Jesolo must cover costs and at the same time, make a profit. Otherwise, the management of an or hotel would not be worth the risk, neither the investment nor the mental anguish resulting from its management. It seems to me more like a cry of: "I need to cover the costs" .... As I said, is the customer and the hotel management that determines the final price. The customer does not care nothing about the costs of Hotel, and what are the margins in the management of the hotel needs to stay on the market. In general, I can not agree on the cost problem. We must add however that prices must be competitive and reasonable. If customers do not believe that to achieve sufficient value for their money, regardless of price, is likely not return. As I have stated, you can not "fix the price" in relation to cost. Some indirect costs may not be assigned to specific budget items, but often involve aspects of the hotel company that customers perceive as added value, and are to weigh in their decision to choose a hotel rather than another similar. How to "decide" when the price is "fair"? In trying to develop a strategy, I had to remember that there is an implicit relationship between price and value. The customer expects to pay more if he is offered, however, a product better than the standard breakfast. So for a luxury room with respect to the economy. As you can see, the value is a matter of opinion, certainly not a fact. If you want an argument simpler, the market there are those who prefer to drive a Mercedes than an Audi. Others prefer the opposite. A sort of "tyranny" of opinion, so ... ... Since there is, indeed, a relationship between price and value (and that value is a matter of opinion), I started to fix the price of my room and related services, taking into account three factors: the profit margin possible, and my costs, the price in terms of market could be tolerated by customers. And his guests how they react? You see, my guests Hotel in Jesolo Lido Villa Roberta have always been a special case: I have always felt that they gave a high value authenticity. Not only. But also placed a high emphasis on courtesy and honesty. Tolerate any errors or omissions. Not tended to be cumbersome, only wanting to pay for good quality. In this way I developed my best actions against customers. Finally, what are the four best stocks? 1) Transparency: no fake money and some special rates are just and clearly linked to a business proposal. The price of regular hotel room and related services must be fair, 2) Clarity: accurate, no exaggerated description of services, 3) Simplicity: prices in Euros in full amount. To forget the gimmick of "95 cents"; 4) Confidence: Simple reciprocate and exchanges between client and manager.

The Three Best Investment Opportunities for the Next Decade
"Is the US's financial position hopeless? I've studied the US finances backwards and forwards, and as I see it the US's financial position most definitely is hopeless.
The actual posted national debt of the US is $14.1 trillion. However, the US reports its finances on a cash basis while omitting its unfunded obligations in such items as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and various other entitlements. If the entitlements are included, the total national debt including unfunded obligations would be over $100 trillion…
So what in God's name is the answer to all this? How will the US's finances be handled? There are only two ways that I can come up with:
The first is -- to default, just declare that the nation is dead broke and it can't meet its obligations. That would be tantamount to admitting that the US is less than a third-rate power, a dying banana republic. Unthinkable.
The second way would be to devalue the currency to the point where obligatory dollar debts would be financed or paid off with dollars equal to pennies or nickels.
It's now really a question of timing. With the national debt compounding at rising rates, the problem of financing the debt becomes ever-more pressing. For this reason, I believe the process of devaluing the dollar will have to be speeded up.
From the government's standpoint, the deliberate devaluation strategy must be kept secret from the public. They must not be allowed to know that the currency they've worked so hard for, that the currency their savings are in, is to be crushed into a shadow of its former self. Ultimately, the awful truth must come out.
At some point the government may be forced to be honest. The phrase will be three words that I coined many years ago: "Inflate or die." And, the government's answer will be, "You wouldn't want this nation to die, would you? We have no choice, but to pay off, or carry, the debts, with a currency that must be devalued down to ten cents on the dollar."
"USD OMG" Richard Russell, Dow Theory Letters, 2/2/11
"Laos is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Asia; with just 6.3 million people…
…the country is home to some of the most fertile soil in the world: more than 20% of its land mass is ripe for agricultural use. This is an astounding number…
Put another way, Laos, with its vast resources and small population, might loosely be considered an agricultural version of Kuwait…
Given its resources, it certainly seems ironic that the prices of staple foods in Laos, including rice, have soared in recent months…
Thing is, it's not that there are food shortages in Laos; this isn't an issue where supply has failed to keep up with demand (thus resulting in rising prices). The price hikes are simply another indicator of monetary inflation causing severe price inflation, particularly in the developing world.
How does this happen? The trillions of new currency units being compulsively manufactured by central bankers are finding their way to developing countries. This surge heats up local markets, causing prices to rise.
The government in Laos will most likely raise the minimum wage.
Rising wages like this are a common ingredient in hyperinflation, spawning a vicious cycle of higher prices, which then beget higher wages, which then beget higher prices, and so on."
Simon Black, SovereignMan.com, 1/18/11
There is an Extraordinary Investment Opportunity, still a "Sleeper" to some degree, which, some would argue, is even better than Gold and Silver.
Indeed, we are among those who agree that Gold and, with the right timing, Silver, are Two of the Three Best.
We need do no more than briefly recall that Gold and Silver are "The Ultimate Money" in an Era of repeated and ongoing Q.E. which debases Fiat Currencies' Purchasing Power. And Gold and Silver are both Hedges against Inflation and have Great Profit Potential as well. One need only compare these Precious Metals Sterling Performance over the last decade with Equities Value-Losing Performance.
But we must also agree that this "Sleeper" Sector may be the Best of All, because there are still several companies in this Sector stocks in which can be acquired at bargain prices, because they are not front and center on many Trading Screen as "The Best", Yet! Indeed, Deepcaster just recommended One trading at just over $5/share.
As background for understanding the Great Potential for The Sleeper Sector, consider that the world's population increases by over 80 million a year.
Consider also that Hundreds of Millions of the 7 billion World Population have entered into the Middle Class, which means of course that they have increased Purchasing Power to command resources.
Also consider Recent Events which give us a Clue regarding this Great Sleeper Opportunity. The recent Riots in Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, India, China and Elsewhere are in no small part about Food Shortages and increasing Prices. Of course, this has been reflected recently in upsurging Agricultural Commodity prices, but that upsurge has not yet been widely reflected in all Food Production Business Values. And therein lies the Sleeper Opportunity.
Indeed, this is one specific Sector still contains Great Opportunities Now. Businesses operating in this Sector have great Competitive Advantage, because in this Sector there is Price Inelasticity Protection on the Downside and inexorably Increasing Demand and thus Profit Potential on the Upside. That Sector is Food!
Consider also that the ongoing Central Bank Q.E. is already generating ongoing substantial Price Inflation as the Real Inflation Numbers (compared to the Bogus Official Ones Shown). This ongoing Q.E. simply magnifies Food Price Inflation.
Shadowstats.com calculates the Real Numbers for the U.S. the way they were calculated in the 1980's and 1990's, before systematic Official Data Distortion and Interventions began in earnest.
Bogus Official Numbers vs. Real Numbers (per Shadowstats.com)
Annual U.S. Consumer Price Inflation reported January 14, 2011 1.50% / 8.91% (annualized December, 2010 Rate)
U.S. Unemployment reported January 7, 2011 9.4% / 22.4%
U.S. GDP Annual Growth/Decline reported January 28, 2011 2.79% / - 2.21%
U.S. M3 reported January 21, 2011 (Month of December, Y.O.Y.) No Official Report / - 2.83%
Indeed, compared with Energy (demand for which, and share prices of companies in which, tend to slump in Economic Downturns) or even occasionally Gold or Silver, there is one Commodity which people demand above all others, regardless of Inflation or Economic Conditions – Food.
While some of the Major Players involved in Food Production have already had big run-ups – we think of ADM, Monsanto, Potash and the like -- there are still Great Bargains to be had with Great Profit Potential.
Indeed, Deepcaster just recommended one in his most recent Alert, trading at just over $5/share. We believe this company has the potential to be valued as another ADM, Monsanto, or Potash.
Given the foregoing Scenario of Exploding Population Growth with hundreds of Million newly in the Middle Class, who have greater Purchasing Power to command Resources, coupled with agricultural production constraints such as arable land limits, it is no surprise that Food Demand is surging.
Couple this Demand with Q.E. generated pressure on prices, as the Sovereign Man quote regarding Laos above demonstrates, and one has a situation in which prices and thus Profits can explode upward again and again.
Thus, The Best Protection, and Profit Potential arising from this developing Reality, is to own Gold, Silver, and Excellent Businesses involved in producing Food.

air laos="air laos" What's the best way to go to Chiang Mai from Guangzhou?
- via Hainan + ship + Danang + ? (overland through Vietnam to Laos etc) OR via Kunming + air + Chiang Mai
You'll only find flights from Bangkok to Guangzhou or from Hanoi to Guangzhou. I think it's tough to get an international flight out of Chiang Mai. If you travel through Vietnam by land, you'll need to get a visa anyway which is available in Bangkok.
I recommed taking an overnight train from Chiang Mai to BKK. Then buy a ticket from a travel agent on Khao San Road to Guangzhou for a day or two later. Bangkok is one of the cheapest places in the world to buy airline tickets. I was able to buy a ticket from Bangkok to Beijing the same day the flight departed for very little money.
From flashy advertisements paid for by travel agents to commercials created by travel websites, there is no shortage of Las Vegas vacation specials. But why do these specials exist in the first place? They exist for three main reasons: to help counteract the distances that many visitors have to travel to reach Las Vegas, to create incentives to experience the city, and to attract celebrities that in turn attract regular tourists.
Millions of tourists crowd Las Vegas casinos and hotels every year, pouring millions of dollars into the local economy. However, very few of these visitors pay full price for their rooms, meals, or entertainment. The truth is that if everyone had to pay full price for these amenities, then the total number of visitors would be much less thus affecting the overall economy. This is because, for so many visitors, a trip to Las Vegas is an expensive and time consuming process. Located in the middle of a desert, the climate is hot and dry and unforgiving. Because of the location and climate, a relative few people call Las Vegas home. It is therefore necessary for most tourists to travel there. This travel is often very expensive. To help encourage tourism and counteract the expenses associated with travel, Las Vegas hotels and casinos offer inclusive vacation specials. These inclusive deals can combine the cost of a room, a meal, and entertainment into one reduced price.
Once the tourists have been lured to the town, they still may need some incentive to leave the action of the casinos. While the casinos draw people to town, the local economy would crumble if people did not also spend money in restaurants, on shows, and at retail stores. Thus, most Las Vegas vacation specials include discounts to retail chains or buy one get one free offers to performances or shows. It is important to remember that if one aspect of the economy falters, then the tourist base would be significantly impacted. Therefore, if the high end restaurants that line hotel lobbies cannot find customers, then fewer people will ultimate spend money in the casinos. Therefore, hotels offer specials to ensure that people not only visit Las Vegas, but also attend and spend money at the other attractions.
These specials are not only offered to the typical visitor, but also the visitor with celebrity status. Part of the mystic of Las Vegas is number of celebrities that visit the city on a regular basis. From the next big NBA star to the led actor in that blockbuster movie, these high end tourists spend huge amounts of money in casinos, restaurants, and clubs. However, each hotel wants to boast the fact that these celebrities stay in their hotel. Thus, certain specials are offered to them. These include complete complimentary high end rooms, meals, and drinks. These kind of accommodations help draw the interest of hundreds if not thousands of tourists. These tourists all spend money and increase the relative economy of the establishment. Thus, regaining the money lost form the specials offered.
Las Vegas hotels offer deals to help increase clients. By increasing clients they can increase revenues, thus recouping any losses associated with the deals. These specials draw people to shows, clubs, and restaurants, and ultimately increase the amount of tourists drawn to Las Vegas.
kingdom of laos="kingdom of laos" Who did more in trying to protect Laos during the Vietnam War, the Lao or Hmong?
Who did more in trying to protect Laos during the Vietnam War, the Lao or Hmong?
I have always wondered this. Whenever I learn about the Vietnam war in school, I only hear about the Hmong and not the Lao. Did the Hmong do more to try and protect the Kingdom of Laos than the Lao themselves?
The Hmong were considered "savages" by both the Vietnamese (both North and South) and the lowland Lao (who are ethnically Thai). Before the French occupied Indochina in the mid 19th century the Hmong were often attacked with no reason by their lowland neighbors and were not allowed to live in peace. The French put a stop to these attacks, and Hmong were just as happy to have them as colonial occupiers.
When the French pulled out the Hmong found themselves under pressure form the ethnic Lao and Vietnamese again. Then the American showed up on the scene. The Hmong saw them as a replacement for the French, and made an alliance with the Americans. In turn the Americans gave the Hmong modern weapons with which they could defend themselves and trained their young men how to effectively use these weapons.
When American advisers were pulled out of Laos in 1963 or 64 (I don't remember the exact date off the top of my head), the Americans (through the CIA) kept their contacts with the Hmong in Laos. About the same time JFK deployed the Green Berets to South Vietnam where they made the same kinds of contacts and arrangements with the Hmong living in the central highlands of South Vietnam.
In Laos the Ho Chi Mihn Trail ran through the heart of the the lands occupied by the Hmong. The use of the so-called "neutral" Laos broke the treaty signed to remove the American presence. The CIA continued to supply the Hmong with weapons and advisers (often retired or undercover Special Forces troops) to put military pressure on the NVA troops guarding their supply route up the Ho Chi Mihn Trail.
It is my feeling that the Hmong actually did more fighting in Laos then the lowland Laos during the course of the war in Vietnam.
Lao National Anthem (Kingdom of Laos, 1947 - 1975)
Foggy window panes, freezing temperatures and snow covered highways … this is December in UK! It is the time of year when "sun" is like celebrity, whenever it comes out …every one rushes to see it.
Hot water bottles, centrally heated rooms, fire places, woolly pollys, gloves, ear caps and even hot coffee is not a match for a warmer sunny day at a turquoise green beach lined with palms and beauties. With a little saving and a little more brain you can made December all sunny and warm by taking flights to Far East.
Holidays in Far East are a complete package, here you can find cheap massage centers, shop in bulk, go water boarding, see stunning temples, have yummilicious food and laze at the warm sunny beaches for hours long. A majority picks for Thailand, for you can find cheap flights to Bangkok and even direct flights to Phuket (beach destination in Thailand) from anywhere in the UK. It's the cheapest too.
The second option is Malaysia, as you know ‘truly Asia'. It's fabulous attraction is ‘Orangutans' you can meet with these amazing orange monkeys in Borneo Kota Kinabalu. However, if you are planning a sunny vacation in Malaysia, be prepared that Flights to Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia are comparatively expensive than flights to Bangkok, Thailand.
The third most popular and affordable Far East destination is Indonesia. Flights to Denpasar Bali are available with top UK airlines including AF-KLM. However, in comparison to the above two, staying at beach front location in Bali can cost you a bit more than expected. The popular beaches are Nusa Dua Beach, Kuta beach, Seminyak, Jimbaran and Sanur Beach.
Other Far East notable destinations are Maldives, Seychelles, Philippines, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
Lastly, what it's like in Far East in December? Temperatures in the Far East, including countries such as China, Malaysia and Thailand are usually high throughout the year. Malaysia can hit a peak of 33C during the summer months while Thailand can hit 35C during November. On an average the weather is tropical, hot and humid. The hottest months in Far East are April and May while from November to February; the weather in Far East is bearably warm, pleasant and a little cooler in night. But regular travelers consider winter time to be the best time to visit Far East as its hot and pleasant at the same time.
The only thing to watch for is the heavy monsoon periods usually following hottest months in midyear time.

news from laos="news from laos" Isn't this marvelous news from Myanmar?
Derek Tonkin, former British ambassador in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, said that after receiving her letter, the junta might be prepared "to have a working relationship of some kind" with Suu Kyi.
It would be further good news if Suu Kyi was able to start a review committee in conjunction with the government and a few of her party members to study the draft proposal constitutional amendments. Good luck Myanmar and a special hello to the little novices who too should be learning about how constitutions work and are written.
We have to take a pinch of salt to digest such news too good to believe!

"No matter how big and powerful government gets, and the many services it provides, it can never take the place of volunteers."- Ronald Reagan. Volunteering abroad is an endeavor that changes the lives of the volunteers as well as the lives of those being helped. As volunteer, especially those who are first time volunteers, they are excited about the prospect of going abroad and helping out. They have a great deal of anxiety and uncertainty because they don't have much information on how life is abroad, and the kind of work that they will do. There is information on volunteer work on the internet on blogs, reviews and volunteer service organizations. In addition to information on the internet, there are books available. These books are written by past volunteers on how life is abroad. The authors are writing from firsthand experience on volunteer work abroad, and life in different countries. These volunteer books are: How to Live Your Dream of Volunteering Abroad It is authored by Joseph Collins, Stefano DeZerega, and Zahara Heckscher. The book is Based on six years of research that included fieldwork in over 25 countries, the book is not just a directory of opportunities, but a critical review of over 80 volunteer placement organizations in this rapidly growing field, as well as a detailed but easy to read manual about everything from why to volunteer to what to do when you get back. It is an in-depth guide for anyone who wants volunteer in Latin America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Eastern Europe Volunteer Vacations: Short-Term Adventures That Will Benefit You and Others The authors are Bill McMillon, Doug Cutchins, Anne Geissinger, and Ed Asner. This book provides one to two pages of information on 150 organizations through which travelers can help others while on vacation at locations both in the United States and around the world. The authors state that they have carefully vetted the organizations but they have stopped short of providing reviews or ratings. While essential information on each organization's work, locations, costs, needed skills, age restrictions, and contact information is provided, the authors encourage readers to research further on their own. They provide tips on how to evaluate an organization, and they intersperse inspiring testimonials from former volunteers throughout the book. This guide is both a good starting point and a sound overview for those interested in undertaking a service-oriented vacation. The International Directory of Voluntary Work It is written by Victoria Pybus. The book is a freshly revised eighth edition of the book that covers all types of voluntary work all over the world. Over 700 organizations worldwide need all types of people, both skilled and unskilled, for all types of work. Residential work available worldwide includes schemes such as organic farming in Thailand, nursing in Chile, archaeological digs in France, re-enacting battles in Pennsylvania, bird observation in the Madagascan rainforest, bee-keeping in Hungary, working with street children in Brazil, studying humpback whales in Hawaii, teaching English in Laos, or running development programs in India. The book also covers non-residential work in the UK and the USA such as planting trees in San Francisco, caring for seal pups in Cornwall, helping to re-house homeless people, working in a dragonfly museum, restoring steam locomotives, and preparing food for dolphins in Florida The straight stuff about joining the Peace Corps It is written by Dillon Banerjee. The book grew from Dillon Banerjee's personal frustration trying to answer these questions for himself: he couldn't find a single book written from the perspective of a Volunteer. It is organized around 73 questions starting with "1. What is the application process like?" and ending with "73. Would you go back and do the Peace Corps all over again?" The nine appendices are rich with information including PCV requirements and how to strengthen your own application plus lists of loan programs and RPCV support groups arranged by state.

lonely planet laos_3="lonely planet laos" which is the best guidebook for South East asia?
1. Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and the Greater Mekong (Lonely Planet Multi Country Guide) (Paperback) by Nick Ray
2.outheast Asia on a Shoestring (Lonely Planet Shoestring Guides) (Paperback) by China Williams
3. is the following book better than the standard lonely planet editon of Thailand; Thailand's Islands and Beaches (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides) (Paperback)
Thanks in advance
Lonely Planet are a great all round choice covering all types of holidays. The shoestring series are great if you want a budget minded trip or backpacking experience. The Lonely Planet guide to thailand beaches is basically the same as the first book, but more concentrated just on the islands and beaches. If you are planning to visit just Phuket, Ko Lanta, Krabi etc then this is a better choice. If you want to see a lot of destinations in one trip then go for the first book which will cover mainland places too. I like using forums from lonely planet and fodors for sepcific info before I go.

The way in which of your True Route of your Martial Arts
I was inside army 40 a long time back, stuck with drab duty and infinite amounts of time through which to conjecture. I used to be supposed to head over to an additional region and kill individuals. This was not a activity I imagined of as honorable.
One particular night time I fell into a conversation having a small non-public, and he asked me if We have previously study Lao Tse. I informed him I hadn't and asked him what it had been. He informed me that it was...The Way.
Now, I acquired arrive throughout the notion Of the Way from the martial arts. I had go through of it, talked about it with fellow scholars, and regarded it in mild manner. Oddly, even though I experienced been from the martial arts to get a couple of years, I experienced no concept that there was a e book expressly uneasy With all the Way.
Not prolonged immediately after that I discovered a backup from the book and began to study it. I dwelt upon the passages, translated the historic Chinese terminology into terms I understood as greatest I used to be able. I used to be to discover that the mere looking through from the book, which will not be a sizable volume, was a journey in itself.
There may be no large without minimal, there is certainly no entrance without the need of back again, translated into by far the most marvelous dichotomy. Oddly, I located that these ideas, excessive and reduced, front and again, were usable in freestyle. In fact, because the a long time handed I used to be to search out that the mere conjecturing of those concepts in thought, even from the center of chaotic freestyle, brought obtain and gain of the sizable dynamics.
My favourite passage of the ebook has usually been, Do practically nothing until eventually absolutely nothing is left undone, as it truly is positively enlightening. I would business upon the forks of my daily life towards the opportunity to implement this method. Finally, the sorts completed ten thousand times, I started to practical experience bits and components of reality, and my fine art would in fact engage in the effortless principles that go in the direction of making up the Genuine Artwork.
Not each and every time would I find a way to produce the concepts From the Way operate in my genuine lifestyle actions, however the contest was Inside Way, and this contest brought me out in the field, undid the standard means of thinking, and enabled me to truly be described as a seeker in action, along with the whims of my youthful drive started to manifest. Feelings turned a joy, age grew to become a relaxation, and and even now The Way nudges me hither and yon. My form transmogrifies for the lilt of this historical rhyme, and another planet beckons unceasingly.
An ideal entire world, the place the realization that The Way is merely the unceasing time ahead of me has settled upon me. A planet in which those obsessed with political intrigue and also the almighty dollar fall sick because of the wayside and envy me my youth and excellent health and fitness. A planet wherever individual beings exist, outdoors the realm of transgressions and judgment, this May be the Way that We've found.
I have been working online for 3 years. I practice different ways of marketing. I create my own but also sell other people's products. I really like Badminton and Basketball, I draw when I have time and enjoy my life with my friends and family.
tubing in laos="tubing in laos" cooking wild and white rice together?
When i was in laos they use to cook wild and white rice together with sweet coconut and stuff it into bamboo tubes and then cover the ends with grated dried coconut....yum. But what i want to know is how to cook wild rice with white rice together in the same pot. You could tell they did this in lao because the white rice would take on a purple hue. Im guessing you add the full amount of water for both rices in one pot, start steaming the wild and then add the white a lil way though, but how much water?....any suggestions appreciated, want it for dinner tonight! Bec
The rices in Laos are different to the ones here, US wild rice will not do, you need to find and Asian store and get the black/purple sticky rice, and to do it here, you soak them in water, rinse, then part cook them, then mix with coconut milk, sweetened coconut, regular sugar or palm sugar, then with a piece of parchment paper you make a small packet, then wrap that in foil and steam or boil for 2 hours, if you can find lotus or bamboo leaves these work better, it is like a Chinese sticky rice dumpling.
I worked in Japan and Singapore and while there I toured Thailand and Vietnam, I had a dish like this in Singapore done with the lotus leaves.
laos tour_4="laos tour" Will this SE Asia itinerary still work?
I was originally going to do 2 months in a clockwise tour. Thailand - Laos - Vietnam (north to south) - Cambodia - Bangkok.
Now I have some friend who are visiting Vietnam starting in Saigon and finishing in Hanoi. Could I do it this way instead.
Thailand - Laos (North to South then cross over to Cambodia) - Cambodia - Vietnam (South to North). then fly to bangkok. I know its a zig zag but is it worth me doing this just to hang out with my friends
I just returned from a trip to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
This is the route I took with my wife: Flew into Bangkok, Two days there, then we drove in a mini van to the border with Cambodia. Walked across the border and got into a second mini van and went to Siem Reap. Spent Four days in Siem Reap visiting Angkor Wat then we went by bus to Phonem Penn for two days then by Boat down the Mekong River into Vietnam. Bus to Saigon. Few days there then flew to Da nang then Hoi An Bus to Hui then overnight train to Hanoi.
Cobra, alias Nong, 27, is a snake handler on Koh Samui island in Thailand. He runs snake shows at bars and hotels on request.
Simon: When, how and why did you get into snake handling?
Cobra: When I was 18 I spent two months at a Buddhist monastery. I made a mistake in my meditation and deliberately tried to look into my most recent past life. This is not recommended for novices, as the point at which you will see into your past life is usually the ‘death door’ (ie the moment you left the prior life) which can be traumatic for those psychologically unready to face the trauma of seeing themselves die.
When I looked into my prior life, it was as though I were looking up an umbilical cord. My consciousness rushed up the inside of the cord and, at the end, it ‘saw’ a small ship sailing on water. Well, maybe it’s a coincidence that I’ve always loved the sea and everything to do with boats and ships, or maybe I was a sailor in my past life, which would explain why I ‘saw’ a ship.
A strange thing happened next. Two huge, vividly coloured and totally terrifying snakes appeared from nowhere and slithered at lightning speed down the inside of the umbilical cord in my consciousness. They were so clear and vividly three-dimensional that they did not look like figments of my imagination, they looked completely real. I was frightened and lost my connection with my past life. When I discussed this incident with my teacher at the monastery later, he gently admonished me for looking into my past life, then explained that the snakes were a defence mechanism which had been generated by my subconscious’ in order to prevent me from seeing things which I was not psychologically ready to see.
My teacher also commented that I was obviously terrified of snakes and that I must confront and defeat all fears if I were to attain contentment. So, after leaving the monastery, I decided to confront my fears and work with snakes.
Simon: What's the scariest thing that has happened to you on the job?
Cobra: Four years ago a five-metre python, a really powerful animal, decided to try and bite my head off during a private show at the Santiburi Resort. I had been distracted by the opulence of the suite on the patio of which we were performing, so had not been concentrating properly. The snake was very strong. It opened its jaws wide and clamped them around the top of my skull, to painful and terrifying effect. My two assistants took what seemed like ages to drag it off me. They had to really battle the snake, which was trying to get my whole head into its mouth. The three of us rolled around for some time, with the snake thrashing around and a woman in the audience screaming.
Simon: What's the secret of effective snake handling?
Cobra: Discipline: being very, very careful. Very good eyesight is essential too, so you can detect the snake’s smallest movements.
Simon: Is there any snake you would not handle?
Cobra: I wouldn’t handle a Malaysian snake called ‘ular cincin’ in Malay (gold-ringed cat snake or mangrove snake), which looks as though it has two heads, one on each end. It has a lightning-fast strike and is very bad-tempered. I have a wife and two young children to support, so I need to try and stay alive.
Simon: Do you drug or defang the snakes? Cobra: No.
Simon: What do you feed the snakes? Cobra: We feed chicken to the big snakes, and eggs, rats, crickets and sometimes frogs to the medium-sized snakes.
Simon: Do you have snakes crawling round your home? Cobra: No, I do not have snakes in my house. I like to leave my work at the ‘office’.
Simon: Do they ever escape? If so, what do you do? Cobra: When one escapes I catch it by the tail, then put it back in its cage. We’re lucky enough to have very understanding neighbours.
Simon: If I come across a snake, what should I do? Cobra: Try not to panic, which is obviously easier said than done, but is very important. If you scream the snake will get scared and will surely strike you. Move very, very slowly away.
Simon: Do spectators freak out? Cobra: When one of my colleagues is handling the snakes, I find it amusing to watch the audience. The men are generally more frightened than the women. I find it particularly funny when I see some big, beefy guy hiding behind his wife, with his face white as a sheet and sweat pouring off him. Of course, I wouldn’t dream of being so rude as so show my amusement.
Simon: Can you make a reasonable living out of snake handling? Cobra: Yes, it is possible but hard work as snakes must be looked after, just like any other animal. Also, because the life span of small snakes is short (four to five years), you have to have a constant supply of new animals. Catching wild snakes is the most dangerous part of the job and sometimes frightens me witless.
Simon: What advice would you give to wannabe snake handlers? Cobra: Lots of snake handlers die on the job. In Thailand we can’t get life insurance. Even after you survive the most dangerous first few years in the job, don’t become complacent. I remember one snake handler of 30 years’ experience who didn’t seek treatment after a king cobra bit him. After three days he died, totally unnecessarily. For your own sake as well as the animals’ well-being, be kind to the snakes - they are often used in shows day-after-day and this can cause trauma, which can make them more dangerous.
Simon: What advice can you give tourists who wish to avoid accidental encounters with snakes. Cobra: Just the obvious advice: do not walk through undergrowth or grass where you can’t see where you are putting your feet. If you follow this advice and stay at an up-market resort, the chances of your coming across a snake are negligible.
Whilst in Thailand, why not visit one of the country’s currently best three beach destinations:
Searching for the exotic? Seeking the mysterious? Looking for wild unexplored islands and beaches? Fascinating temple culture? Bizarre scenery? Gastronomic delights? Exciting nightlife? Adventure trails? Lively markets? Wildlife? History? Come to Indochina!
All this and more can be found in what is still a largely unexplored part of the world. East of India and south of China lays a group of countries some of which are only now beginning to fully open their doors to outsiders and they have so much to offer in the way of travel opportunities. This is the fabled Indochina, home to many different peoples and ethnic groups who welcome you to travel to their homelands to enjoy the riches they have to offer.
Thailand calls itself "The Land of Smiles" but, to be fair, the epithet could apply to the whole of Indochina. The peoples of this part of the world are, in general, very hospitable and there is no greater pleasure than to sit with them and share a meal, or laugh together while bargaining over a purchase.
Whichever country you travel to in Indochina; Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia or SW China, you will be struck by the glorious colours – in the ethnic minority people's clothes and jewellery, in the stunning fruit and vegetables in the markets, the green of the jungles, the turquoise of the seas, the saffron colours of the Buddhist monks.
It is also an area of unforgettable tastes. Mainstream Thai and Vietnamese food have become well known in the west, but the tastes of Laos or Cambodia are much less well known as are the foods of the ethnic minorities of all these countries. Few people can resist the allure of limes, coriander, lemongrass, coconut and the other spices and unusual flavours of the local cuisines.
This is a region of water, both rivers and seas which have both contributed to the region's diverse agriculture and acted as transport routes and national borders. Thailand and Vietnam have long coastlines with beautiful beaches and isolated islands. Even landlocked Laos shares part of the great Mekong River, the main artery of the region, which begins its life in Tibet and works its way through Yunnan, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam linking all of this region together.
Different cultures have influenced the region, leaving a fascinating hybrid culture in each. Thailand, despite being the only country in the region never to be colonised, shows the influence of India as does Cambodia which also shows a Chinese influence. Vietnam and Laos show more of a Chinese influence with much less Indian. These influences can be seen in the religion, cuisine and architecture. All of these countries except Thailand were French colonies and their influence also shows in the same ways. And, of course, the countries have influenced each other.
More recently, partly through war, and later through trade the region has taken on influences from all over the world, showing the people's natural ability to absorb and adapt. But at heart the indigenous culture remains: the Viet culture in Vietnam, the Khmer in Cambodia etc.
The region has recently emerged from a deeply troubled past and is now generally peaceful and is poised on the brink of taking a strong place in the future and it welcomes travellers from all corners of the world to come and see its magical countryside, vibrant cities, and breathtaking beaches.
